Why did I buy this?
Have you ever bought a game because the premise sounded great or the cover looked awesome, and then you get it home, pop it in your console-of-choice, only to find the game is lacking in ways you didn't expect?
I kind of had that moment today when I played Infernal: Hell's Vengeance for the first time. I bought it when it initially came out, because I figured "hey, third person shooter! I like those! A story between good and evil? Even better!" Don't know why I put it off, but I did. Either way, I find myself completely uninterested in continuing it much further! While it's good that there isn't an auto aim feature, even on easy mode, it's so difficult to really get a good aim on the enemies. And the low amount of ammo you're given in the prologue? No wonder there's an achievement just for getting past it! Anyway, enough griping. Anyone else have a similar experience in the past? |
I remember getting Avatar The Last Airbender a few years back. I thought it would be a great game only to find that it was short, and only had one short boss fight with Zuko. 8p
|
Ugh, I've heard horror stories about the Avatar game. I was kind of tempted to buy it for the easy 1000 gamerscore, but I don't think it's even worth that!
|
Huh, I never heard of that game. At least I'll know to pass on that one whenever I come across it. For me it was Suikoden Tactics. I thought "Cool, it's a Suikoden game, I'm into this. And look, it's only ten bucks." Now I understand why it was ten bucks. I mean, it wasn't that bad, but it wasn't good either. Lulz. :'D |
That is completely me. I do that so often it is sickening. I have sold alot of games that I have just had sitting around my house and anime as well. Not to count books (manga). So I ended up going through everything and actually thinking if it is something that I will actually use or if I think I might just end up not really being interested in it. I have gotten over 200 or more for everything I have sold off so far and am still working on getting rid of alot of things. It feels so good to clean up the house.

I did this with Suikoden IV and Unlimited SaGa - I think it was.
I only bought Suikoden IV because I loved three. It wasn't horrible but I just couldn't finish it. I think I was almost done too lol. Unlimited SaGa was just bad. Well I think, I don't remember it exactly because it was so long ago but I just remember it being pretty bad/confusing. |
I've heard stories about Unlimited SaGa, so I stayed away, despite really enjoying the SaGa series.
The thing is that I dislike relying on reviews to see what's good and what's not. Many reviewers didn't like Prototype, and that's probably my favorite game of the moment! So what can us poor misguided souls do when we see a game that sounds really awesome? xD |
Yes, for me it was Breath of Fire V. I am not sure if other people enjoyed this game or not, but it was far from what I was expecting.

Sonic, legend of the rings.
worst wii game ever. |

You do well to stay away, i loved the SaGa series, especially frontier on the PS 1 ... and though frontier 2 was not as good it was still a solid game ... but the one son the PS2 were just crap ... there is no way to make them seem good. I bought it in a bargain bin at EB for 3 bucks and still felt ripped off. XD Also i agree with the BoF V statement, that game was a load of crap and i am a huge BoF fan. #3 was probably my fave rpg on the PS1. |

Then the fourth one came out and it was shit. It ruined the series. ;___; |
I think for me it was the Dierge(sp?) Of Cerberus I was like "oh hey look Final Fantasy game" it should be rather decent, but ugh it was so lame and annoying..I couldn't make it passed the first level. Another one for me would also probably have to be the third Shadow Hearts..its not related to the other story line the first two were and its just kinda bleh. I mean its not bad but after you play the first two the third lets you down just a bit. :( |
Kingdom Under Fire: Some Lame Subtitle Here
It was that game that forever made me hate, "No returns on open games" policies. -.- It was on the 360, and I don't remember a whole lot of it, thank God. D: That, and Dawn of War 2. Don't get me wrong, I looooooove the DoW franchise, but I didn't like it when DoW went with the strategy it did. Everyone raved on and on about it, and I just couldn't stop missing my good ole' RTS genre. And of course, it's connected to Steam, so that means you have to have an internet connection, and once you "Upload" it to Steam, you can't put it on any other computer, I believe. So you can't resell it, and no one else can play it. Big waste of $50. Now it mocks me silently in my games cupboard with my non-working copy of Gears of War Windows Live. .-. |
I'm trying to think of a good example, as I've had a few. The one that's coming to mind this morning though is the original Dokapon for GBA. It looked cute, and I needed some games as I was trading in my library of games before my move to England and I wanted everything to be portable.
It had an interesting concept, but what really was off putting was the fact that if you die you lost all your items and went back to level 1. To me that was waay too much of a penalty. :| Hubby had a similar issue though with Two Worlds on 360. He thought it was going to be a poor man's Oblivion, and while it had a similar feel to it the voice acting was cringe worthy and it just was overall cack. I love that Gamestop will let you bring it back no questions within a certain period. |
It disappoints me that the perfect game I have for this thread, I can't remember the name of. It was some game I got at Costco that had cool boxart and was pretty cheap. Well, I played it and couldn't get past the first level, because they didn't tell you anything and I had no idea what I was doing. My life went down every time I moved and then I died but I could still walk around. It was just "What the hell?"
I sold it to Gamestop for like, two dollars. |
@Sho ~ *now is curious to know what that game is* :ninja:
|
I'm curious as to what the game is, too! My mom bought me a game for the Wii that she thought had nice box art, so she bought it for me (Heavenly Guardian). Turned out it was a piece of crap shooter D: So I made her promise me no more buying me video games as a gift unless I approve first xD
|
I bought Boktai for GBA once because it was cheap, and someone had once told me it was a fun little RPG... but it turned out to be some kind of strategy shooter, and battles completely hinged on having the sensor on the cartridge under direct sunlight, which made the screen extremely difficult to see, and the difficulty was way too high, especially considering I couldn't see anything. >>; Plus, I play games at night most of the time, which made it pretty much impossible to play... I wonder what the creators were thinking when they made it.
|
Thankfully, I always extensively research games before I buy them. xD I don't have money to throw down on games I don't know if I'll like, so I'll just go home and read a review then come back later.
But I didn't always used to do that, and as a result I ended up with Silent Hill 4. D: |

It's GamesRadar's reviews that I rely on, and GameInformer if I got the most recent one. I remember how hard it was trying to decide whether to buy Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed. I think I mulled it over for like 3 days. XD I got Assassin's Creed. Glad I did, too. I'm actually not much for the genre of Mass Effect, but the dialogue trees look really compelling. |
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon.
I was young, stupid. I saw it and thought "Oh hey. A gory fighting game with a customize character option, and KART RACING! It's like 3 things in one!" I bought it for three dollars. Got home, popped it in. Played it for about 20 minutes and got bored, so I tossed it under my brother in law's bed with all the other horrible games we've played and never saw it again. Three years later I'm hanging out with my ex and I see it on his shelf. I'm thinking "Oh hey that was a neat game for the first 20 minutes, maybe I can tolerate it now." "Take it," says my ex, "it's a terrible game." Go home. Pop it in. Play for 20 minutes. Shut it off. Shoved it under my brother in law's bed. NEVER ENDING CYCLE. |
I figured out what the game was. It's called Unlimited SaGa. I looked up a review and found out why I didn't die when I died. Apparently you get HP and lifepoints. My HP went all the way down but I still had lifepoints so I didn't die. And I kept getting hurt because I must have been running in to random obstacles.
Oh well, I'm still not gonna pick this game up again. Gamestop gave it a 4.3 and I can understand why. |
for me it would have to have been Wild Arms 5. Cause it just royally sucked, and the main character would not shut up when I went to search on the map.
The graphics were good, but I was just disappointed in it anyway. I liked wild arms 1 and 2 to that. |
