I'm planning on purchasing a DS or a DSi in the future, thank you Kingdom Hearts, and I was wondering what everyone's favorite games for the DS are. Once I finish the Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days game I need something else to play so I don't feel like I'm wasting my money and all that jazz.

I'm thinking of checking out the World Ends with You, even if it does seem a bit like a borrowed concept of characters and a few Final fantasy games but that's all I got so far.

So, what are your favorite games for this device?

Oh, I have a lot of favorites.
The Nintendo DS is such a fun console, which surprised me because I don't usually like handheld systems. :D

So I would recommend the following games:

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Puzzle)
Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (Puzzle)
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (Action)
Devil Survivor (Strategy RPG)
Final Fantasy IV (RPG)

The Phoenix Wright games would have to be my favorite. Pokemon is second to that. Then Fire Emblem.

Those games seem boring, but are such a joy to play.

Edit: Also, The World Ends With You looks familiar because it's a Square Enix game. They tend to have repeated themes. It also says that the game was inspired by some elements off KH: Chain of Memories. And it's the same artist who did KH and Final Fantasy (Tetsuya Nomura), who has also done the character art for the game.
I'd check that one out. Looks promising. :3

Try Knights in the Nightmare, if you can find it. The game's system is strange and entertaining, and I'm sure once I get over the frustration of doing something wrong with the key items and cutting myself off from recruiting the first archer, I'll be as satisfied by the storytelling style as I was with the first bits of it.

And for the record, The World Ends With You does not rip off Final Fantasy. It rips off Gantz. (Which may be why it was the first Square-Enix game that I felt was worth playing in a looooong time. Then again, maybe it was the sheer brilliance of the game systems, or the way the localization managed to both retain the extreme Japanese-ness and be wholly understandable to any old American who felt the desire to pick it up...)

If you are patient and looking for a platformer, then the Mega Man ZX games would be a good choice.

Yes! I second these games. I love the Layton games. ^_^ I'm into puzzle games in general.

I'll also suggest:
Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure (Puzzle combined with side scroller action)
Picross (puzzle)
Warioware Touched (super fun)
Trauma Center (strategy)
Puzzle Quest 1 & 2 (puzzle)
Big Bang Mini (action?ey)
Rhythm Heaven (music)
Cooking Mama 1 & 2 ( - I love them both. Gardening Mama isn't as fun)

The Phoenix Wright games are amazingly fun. If you've never played a visual novel-type game before, it can seem like a lot of text, but it's really part of the fun.

The Professor Layton games are also really fun, though not everyone is interested in the types of puzzles presented in-game. The stories and animation are both top-notch, though.

The Trauma Center games are great, though not for people who are squeamish. Though not terribly graphic, if you can't handle virtual surgery, they're really not for you.

My favorite DS game, though, is probably Devil Survivor. I'm a huge fan of the MegaTen series of games and this is a neat hybrid between Strategy and RPG. And, as usual with MegaTen games, the story is great.

Sizzla pretty much recommended the games I would have recommended. I will also say that Chocobo Tales is a cute game that is entertaining, if you like games like that, which I do. I am also looking forward to playing Scribblenauts.

Soul Bubbles - most under-appreciated game for the DS. It's so much fun, and at the same time so very soothing. It includes both "action" and "puzzles", but in such a different way. At first I thought it would get pretty boring after a while, but I've played every level at least twice and still love to kill time by replaying them. And the music/sound combination is... ethereal. ;)
(Oh, and it's one of the few games on the DS that are already worth buying for the graphics alone. Very beautiful and detailed. =3)

The Layton games have been recommended quite a few times, but add me to the list of fan girls. Those are just so much fun, and it's good to finally see one of those good old puzzle games return to the handhelds.

Phantom Hourglass was mentioned before, too. And I have to agree just as much - that game takes advantage of the DS features in such an ingenious way (you know, if you're told to blow something out - you might want to actually... blow :D), and... well, it's Zelda! ;)

Children of Mana has received quite a lot of not-so-positive reviews, but I find it rather enjoyable myself. I'm not expecting it to feature a FF7-esque story, but while normally I'm no a fan of dungeon crawling, it's rather fun in this instance.

Seems like I'll have to get my hands on some of the games recommended in this thread myself. If only they weren't so terribly expensive!

Etrian Odyssey I & II. Damn good old school dungeon crawler. It's actually challenging too. I really had fun with it. I beat It and I'm working on II now off and on when Mene is not whoring my time too much. :3

A Link for the curious

Gary, that looks kind of interesting. I've got myself Orcs and Elves for those "old school dungeon crawler" moments, but that one's extremely boring. Was Doom really that much of a monotonous, un-challenging game and I was only glorifying it in my declining mind, or does O&E just not live up to it's big brother?

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Harvest Moon DS Cute
Trauma Center: Under the Knife

Everything that I can think of has already been said, but just to reinforce my favorites:

1. The World Ends With You
2. Pokemon - Any of them, even the silly spin offs like Ranger, and Mystery Dungeon
3. LoZ: Phantom Hourglass
4. Scribblenauts - I haven't actually gotten to play this yet, but I've seen the previews and promos for it. If the next game that I had to get wasn't 358/2 days then this would be right at the top of my list.

I would recommend The World Ends With You (the art may look similar, but the gameplay is incredibly unique)
also, I enjoy creature collection/breeding games so I enjoy the Pokemon games, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. One that looks fun if you're creative is Scribblenauts. I've played it a bit and enjoyed but do not own it yet.
Also, Okami sequel Okamiden is coming out next year on the DS and I am incredibly excited!

No one mentioned Disgaea DS or A2 (Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2)...No tactical lovers around here?

I'm playing Disgaea DS right now and absolutely loving it. The second is only out on PSP, but luckily I got one of those too. (*wants to eventually upgrade to the PSP Slim*)

My personal favorites:

Scribblenauts (if you're creative it's insanely fun)

Super Mario 64 (a port from the N64 with added gameplay features and the ability to play as Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi)

Mario Kart DS (still fun after three years of playing)

Metroid Prime: Hunters (FPS, online play is good)

If you own a DS or a DSi but you haven't played the Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright, et al.) games, YOU MUSSSST! And with the new Ace Attorney game coming out Q1 of 2010, it's good to catch up now so you're familiar with the characters. The new game's going to be a point-n-click though...

Scribblenauts is awesome but it can be pretty challenging. So are the Professor Layton games. That being said, I think the 2nd Prof. Layton game had one of the best storylines ever. Loved it!

Henry Hatsworth was an interesting concept. Very fun game!!! Warioware Touched! is tons of fun, but can be hard to find.

I've played a lot of games on the DS and I've only met a few RPGs on there that I didn't like. The Trauma Center games are pretty fun, and if you like something a little more cutesy, Cooking Mama is pretty sweet. Gardening Mama is good but gets old pretty fast.

Also if you liked games like Kirby, give Starfy a try. It's a platformer so it had that old school feel to it, and it's not difficult but it's super cute!

Right now it has to be Ninja Town. It looks still and cutesy but its a greeeat strategy game. Its actually identical to the Fan Girl Attack game on Mene.

I still remember when I would play Nintendogs like it was a drug though. It was the first game I got with my DS and I think if the dogs could die mine would be dead I've ignored it for so long now. Nintendogs was kind of fading.

I'm also a huge fan of Tetris for the DS, Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton. I just love the DS games they're so fun.

I hate that I have to choose but here's a very long and detailed list of my favorites!

1. Professor Layton: I love these games. They're classic, witty, and actually have plot. Unlike a majority of the Nintendo DS Games this actually contains much more than what "kid" games are. This game makes you think and has a perfect story flow. It's one of those under appreciated games everyone picks up to play, even if they stink at the puzzles.

2. Any Pokemon Game: Alright, I know what thinking. Of course this should be on the list. Even though I think they're making more pokemon games just to cash in, they know exactly what it is that keeps us hooked. It seems that this company never runs out of creative ways to make pokemon even more interesting. And now with the re-release of Gold and Silver, for Pokemon's 10th anniversary I think, it's a series we will never truly get rid of.

3. Phoenix Wright Games: I haven't really played this game religiously but even when playing once or twice you know it's a great game. The characters are colorful and amusing. Every time I play this game I always think I'm in an episode of Boston Legal.

4. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days: I've loved the series even before it came to DS. Even though I'm not really good at these type of games and I usually have a printed out walk through by my side. It's a game I love to play. Despite my sixth time trying to beat a boss.

5. Cooking Mama: This is pretty much my 'casual gaming' choice for favorites. Their is no plot, and what not but still is very perky and cute. The recipes can be intermingled which definitely gives it a bit of flare and creativity. Though you will get looks from other people when you're blowing into your DS/DSi microphone to cool a hot plate. But, hey, you aren't bored.

6. Animal Crossing: Another one of my top favorite for casual gaming and such. It's not really a casual game but definitely is one of the few that I feel have a bit of a cross. The game isn't really your average game, for example let's say you talked to that damn insurance animal and he's keeping you there till you pay 10,000 for insurance. You turn off the game and you start it up again. When your greeted by a very angry mole saying you shouldn't restart the game.

You know when this is a different game when you're ACTUALLY scolded by a character for not saving your game. It has fishing, Bug Catching, planting, clothing, and furniture.

7. Harvest Moon: Another one of the games I really adore, preferably DS Cute version, has to be Harvest Moon. It's a very cute game where your basically raising a farm, selling crops, and earning bonus points with some goddess or God. Their really isn't much of a plot in the game, since it has a few elements of a dating-sim game. Whether your a guy or girl you can woe a favorite of the characters that are reachable.

And since American Nintendo will probably not be taking out any good dating-sim games this is probably as close as we'll get to one.

Knowing me I probably am missing a bunch of other favorite games like Mario and others...maybe when I have time and such I'll probably post another part to it.

I'm currently crushing on:

1. The World Ends With You
2. Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days
3. Pokemon Platinum

I'm surprised I like The World Ends With You more than I like Kingdom Hearts, but I guess it's because WEWY is totally new, while Kingdom Hearts use the same system as the other games.

I also think I'm getting into the newest Professor Layton game. I have a lot to catch up on due to not playing my DS since Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass came out.
