Need to get the pokerus into that game.

Can someone explain to me this EV/IV stuff?
I've pretty much read the entire thread since I'm such an obsessive nutbag like that, but uh...
Yeah. Haven't played anything newer than LeafGreen, so I'm far behind in the Pokeverse.

Awesome Hata!! Congrats! :XD

Facade - Edgar said he'll log on and try to explain for you. It's kinda complex. I understand it, but not well enough to explain it in a way you'd probably understand. Hell, I really have little patience when it comes to it so I usually bribe him to do my training for me if I need it. (I've done my own, but I hate having to tally how many points I got...ugh ><)

He does, however, get most of my uber cool stuff. I gave him all my Rare Candies I found so far on HG, I've bought 3 or 4 different EV training items from the Battle Zone, and I let him raid my Pearl that I had left a lot of crap on there after I transferred what I wanted to Platinum. So yah I do try to pay him back in game. :XD

@Facade, this explains it pretty well: Serebii's Version I think this is what Hatake might have found?
Also, here's a guide that I use for what effort values certain pokemon give you. This same guide also has a good explanation of EV's at the beginning. 8D Yay GameFaqs

IV's means Individual Values. Like EV's they are also stat points. Every Pokemon, when it is created has a random bonus number of stats given to it. It's like how in some RPGs, when you create a character of a certain class, it gains bonus points to boost it on something at the beginning. At least that's how I figured it worked - except that I'm not sure if the IV's are completely random or not.

Edit:
o Ao It'll be better when Edgar explains it.

Thanks for the props Veiss. Here goes EV and IV 101:

At the most basic level, pokemon IVs are like genes. IVs stand for "Individual values" If you catch 2 level 10 geodudes, put them side by side in your group and compare their stats, they will almost always be slightly different. That's because each stat has a random number from 0-31 attached to it when the game creates the individual pokemon. That number is a bonus that the pokemon receives to its stats at level up. The bonus is how many extra points it will get by the time it hits level 100. However, these numbers are invisible, and without help from internet sources, you don't get to know what they are.

For example: If one of those geodudes had an attack IV (each stat has its own random number) of 10, its attack would be 1 point higher at level 10, 2 points higher at level 20 and so on until you hit level 100, when you would see the full effect.
When people are writing the IVs of their pokemon online you will often see it written something like this:
30/12/15/31/26/18 This means that the HP bonus at level 100 is 30, Attack is 12, defense is 15, special attack is 31, special defense is 26, and speed is 18. It becomes useful to know these numbers when determining whether you want to add a pokemon to your group. Obviously, with an attack IV of 12 and a special attack IV of 31, this wouldn't make a very good geodude since it relies heavily on its attack stat. If you have a pokemon that hasn't been in any fights and want to know its IVs, just type "pokemon IV calculator" into a search engine. There are a bunch of good ones. Type its stats (and nature - which is another thing to talk about some time) into the calculator, and you will get an idea of its IVs. The higher the level, the better accuracy you will get. You can't fight with it first though. Its stats can change because of what you fight, but thats a couple paragraphs down...

There are ways to manipulate these stats by selectively placing pokemon in the day care center to get an egg that contains a pokemon with certain IVs, but there are entire FAQs online dedicated to that subject.

Second is EVs. Think of these as the way you make your pokemon grow. EVs stand for "effort values". Every time you fight an enemy, the game keeps track of another hidden number that will wind up being applied to your pokemons stats. The number depends on the type of pokemon you fight.
Each pokemon is allowed to accumulate 512 of these effort points from fighting enemies. For every 4 points you accumulate in a given stat, that stat will go up by one point. For example: a rattata gives one speed EV to everyone that fights it. If you defeat four rattata's, you will eventually gain a bonus to your speed of one point. (That is why you can't do any fighting before checking a pokemon's IVs... see above).

There are limitations to this though. I already mentioned that you can only accumulate 512 points on any given pokemon. Additionally, no more than 255 can be applied to any given stat.
EV training (a subject you hear a lot about) is fighting only carefully selected enemies to purposely force your pokemon to get bonuses in some stats and not others. In the example of the geodude above, you would want him to fight only enemies that give you attack, HP, or Speed EVs until you hit 255 on any stat and 512 total. That way you would emphasize his attack power and speed, while ignoring his defenses (which are already good) and completely ignoring his special attack which is bad and not really used anyway.

When people type out their EV training online, you will see it written like this: 6HP, 252Att, 252Speed. That means that they accumulated 6 points in HP which will give a bonus of 1 HP by level 100, 252 attack EVs, which will give a bonus of 63 attack by level 100, and also a bonus of 63 to speed by level 100. These numbers are invisible too, and if you want to do this, you need to track them yourself on a piece of paper. Different enemies give different amounts of points and to different stats. Serebii.net [http://www.serebii.net] has an excellent pokedex that shows exactly what EVs you get from any given pokemon. Almost all pokemon give only 1 or 2 EVs at a time. There are rare exceptions though.

It sounds extremely complicated and time consuming, and it can be. There are ways to speed the process up though. Either ask if you are interested, or look it up in an FAQ. People have this down to a fine art, and I can EV train a pokemon in just under an hour.

I hope this helped you. If you have any additional questions, fire away. I can probably answer them. I had to figure this all out too, and now I can make pokemon of incredible strength and do it really fast. I enjoy making and training them (everyone has to have a strange and embarrassing hobby) and occasionally do it for trades and such online.
And if you need another example of how this can make a difference in your pokemon's strength, catch a magikarp and level it up. Get ahold of me. I will trade you another one that I made (spent yesterday making them) that is "Adamant" nature (thats a different story) and has 31 attack and 31 speed IVs. Its going to make the nastiest gyarados you have ever seen. And you can compare it to one you catch in-game and train without paying attention.

BTW... does anyone want to trade?
I have several adamant gibles, adamant magikarp (for gyardos), some modest feebas, and a couple timid magnemites. They all have max IV for attacking stats.

I loved Crystal with my entire being and was obsessed with it for the longest time, so when I found out earlier in the year/late last year about the remakes that were coming out of that generation, I was in heaven. I've already finished SoulSilver and my dad (who I managed to get obsessed with Pokemon xD) is still in Johto in HeartGold. I love how he managed to go to the seventh gym for his fifth badge o_o;;

I really love a lot of the new features. The Pokeathlon is pretty nice in concept, and it gives more usage for the apricorns than just making Kurt make pokeballs all the time y'know? It's also a good way to give people who enjoyed contests (like me) something at least semi-similar in the Johto region. I also love the fact that your first pokemon follows you and you get a pokewalker. They're trying to make me walk in real life now? Seriously? Actually, that's a good thing and it has some neat features too. Hehe :3

I finally gots my own DS Lite and HeartGold! :squee:
You should all be proud of me. :insane:
I've been in the Pokemon Dark Ages for quite some time now!
I haven't played anything newer than Gold and LeafGreen prior to this most recent purchase!

@June: I totally agree with you on the Pokewalker concept! I find it very refreshing that, not only did they bring back the concept of a Pokemon walking beside you, but they also made it more hands-on, and so now you can also take a Pokemon to "walk beside you" IRL as well! I think that's fascinating, and it's things like that that make me want to become a Game Designer myself. :) Although something tells me the tedious hours would get to me. :gonk:

@Edgar: Damn! That is some AMAZING information right there! One quick question - so Natures (adamant, timid, etc.) determine a Pokemon's something-or-other? What exactly does the nature determine?
I'm totally behind the times, and loving hearing about this stuff! My mind is too simple and impatient to sit there and do EV/IV training, but it's totally nice to know about! I'm too lazy in my gaming style, though.

Also - I was WOWED by the graphics of HeartGold (and subsequently SoulSilver). It's fascinating... I love how there's almost that 3D feel to it (as if I'm edjubacated enough to know if it's truly 3D-like or in actuality 2D... or something even funkier! :gonk: )... Like I said, haven't played anything newer than LeafGreen before buying HeartGold, so it is totally taking my breath away. @[email protected]

Facade - Natures effect the stats of your pokemon. There's a nice little blip here - Serebii.net Games - Natures

I think Serebii does an awesome job explaining it. Their whole IV/EV training section, the last time I looked, was rather lacking and even at times I scratch my head how they made a calculator for the IVs. Ed says it's all mathematical algorithms or something.

@Facade - Thats awsome. welcome to the 21st century. If you run into any trouble at all, post it here. We are all more than happy to help get you going again.

The only thing I would add to the nature guide on Serebii is to make sure you try to match the nature with the pokemon you want. With your geodude, you would want an Adamant, Lonely, or Brave nature. Those all increase attack. You would want to avoid Modest, Calm or any other nature that decreases attack. Thats not to say it won't work, but your pokemon won't be as strong. And the 10% bonus the guide mentions equates to a 15-20 point boost by the time you fight the elite 4 on most pokemon.

And Izumi is right. IVs are all mathematics. They just look for patterns in the way a pokemon's stats increase at level up and project that out to level 100. Personally, I love it. Math is cool.

Okay, so I've been reading up on Serebii, and I'm totally loving your info now that I've seen the IV calculator and whatnot! It all makes sense now! I guess I'm more of a visual person when it comes to crap like this. :gonk:

I have a Quiet Cyndaquil now... I planned on restarting my game anyway, since I'm OCD like that, and... Yeah, I just kept restarting until I got something half decent. Serebii says Quiet raises Sp. Attack and lowers Speed... While I'd prefer if I got Mild/Rash, I'm too lazy to restart and leave it up to randomness once again. D:
...Sp. Attack is good for a Cyndaquil, right? I mean, after all... Fire damage is included under Sp. Attack... Right? :|

Ideally, you would want Modest. The ultimate moveset I would want on a Typhlosion would be Flamethrower, Sunny Day, Solar Beam, and Eruption. Flamethrower, Solar Beam and Eruption all use Sp.Att. for their damage. So you wouldn't need any Att. at all. You still need your defenses though.

I like Sunny Day because it makes all fire moves to 1.5X damage. Plus, while Sunny Day is going, Solar Beam does NOT require a round to charge up. Meaning, while sunny day is going, you will have 2 fire moves doing 150+ damage and a 120 damage grass type move for anyone that uses a water type pokemon to try and kill you.

And once you get going a little bit, I would be happy to trade you a couple pokemon that have great IVs and desirable natures. {This offer goes to anyone reading this too} I've been doing a ton of selective breeding lately and have 2 boxes full of pokemon that didn't make my cut, but are still way better than anything you will find in the wild.

----------

Out of all the starters on HGSS, I prefer Totodile. An Adamant Feraligatr is a force to be reckoned with. Aqua Tail, Ice Fang, Crunch, and Superpower! Now that is a moveset.

Really? Feraligatr? :|
I dunno, I guess I've always been a Typhlosion type of person.
Probably because of the lack of fire Pokemon early on, plus the fact that Cyndaquil is pretty damn adorable.

I'm still probably going to re-restart, then... I'm such an impressionable young mind, since I haven't played Pokemon in quite some time, and I feel like I have major reading-up to do, and tons of stuff to learn. :ninja:
So... Yeah. D:

@ Rigola - sure we do. Just PM us with what you want to do and most of us (at least me anyway) loves to play.

If you couldn't tell, I'm kind of a breeding nut and an amateur statistician. I prefer to make abnormally strong pokemon for no other reason than to do it. I currently have 12 pokemon that are waiting on EV training. Every one has been specially bred and is predisposed to being really strong.
