Face book account or not
Yo, my brother has one, my mom and dad have one, heck even my aunt, uncles and cousins have their own. so whats stopping me from making my own.
well my mom says she doesn't want me on face book or myspace for fear of being a victim of the social network sites and for the fact I don't have any friends out of state. well I say FUCK THAT! I want to be able to chat with folks from other states and family with out the need of a PHONE. So what do you think? is mommy right:( or do I have balls and I can do it.=3 ps. if I did it would you be my friend:O |
It all depends on your age really.
I wouldn't want someone as young as 12 on one without them first being well schooled on net safety. I should totally offer a class or something at the community center here... |
Well, miss I'm 16 and I do know not to give out information to people I barely know.
I have been schooled on the 'what not to do's' and I think i'm ready to have a page on that site. my older brother is 18 and my mother doesn't bother him anymore, because he knows about the dangers. what i'm saying is, if she can trust him, then she can trust me. I |
Usually everyone gets one when high school ends or is about to end people at my school started getting them when senior year started. As for a place to meet people from out of state, I wouldn't recommend facebook. Facebook is usually just used by people who know each other in real life most people wont accept friendship from people they don't know in real life because then it gets to cluttered with people you may or may not talk to. I think you will probably enjoy it more when high school ends. =)

You're 16 and don't already have one, wow.
Now I'm surprised. As long as you keep your profile hidden except to your friends and family I would see no problem. |
Well yeah, i'll do as you say and only let the fam and friends see me. oh and how is my age and face book shocking? is it unusual to see some one my age with out one.
|
i have a facebook, myspace, gaia, myyearbook(which i have to check), andddd a youtube account lol
|
I say at sixteen, you're old enough to have a facebook account. My cousin is thirteen and has one - so I'm sure you're mature enough for one.
However, you are asking people on here if they would add you... don't you think that's a bit risky? This is an avatar website - I could be a forty year old balding man for all you know instead of an eighteen year old girl. (Which I am eighteen, a girl - just happen to have a male avatar cause it's cute.) I'm all for adding online friends on social networking sites if you KNOW them really well - just not, "hey - we both post on the website so we should be friends." |
Lol i'll only add the folks from my friends list and that is currently empty. :D so basicly no one from here unless there my friends!
|
I agree that, if you know 'internet safety' and keep your profile private to a degree (there are different levels of privacy on facebook with some things) then you are capable of having one. I think your mom is just like a lot of parents and afraid that somehow you'll make a friend that won't be who you think they are and somehow you'll get yourself into trouble. Frankly, I don't see why you can't be on facebook but you can be on an avatar site (unless this is unknown to her.)
|
Age has a lot to do with things. I mean when I was younger my parent's didn't much like me using the internet, even though all you could do was go online and read documents.
I can understand why parents don't want their kids to use networking sites, I mean people messing with you, identity theft, etc. Be smart is really the thing. Just parents being protective I think, I mean somebody messing with me? Being a pedophile or whatever? For younger folks it's a big deal to parents. I don't know how old you are and I won't ask, but age is really the issue. |
Yeah my mom is really paranoid about that kinda stuff too. Diff reasons though, she's afraid people will steal my identity or something. She also sees all the news stories about people who didn't get jobs because the company checked up on them on facebook/myspace/whatever else and saw they had not so nice pics there. She doesn't listen to me about my profiles being private and me not having anything stupid on there anyway. Oh well.

This thread actually belongs in Media, so I am packing it up and sending it there:)

The whole point of growing up is making your own decisions!
I say go for it and make a Face Book. BUT! Be careful about it. Asside from my family nick-name and my last name, None of my information is actually true. I do not hand out my phone #, my e-mail, my B-day, or my address. And if it is mandatory for me to complete some of those fields when signing up, I just make something up. :) "Where are you from: La La land." Like that. Family and friends should already have that information anyway. And if they don't, just PM it to them. Personally I love having a FB account. My friends who live 3 hours up north are on there. My Mom and my step-dad have one. All of my cousins have one, and all of my aunts and uncles have one. Even my GRANDMOTHERS have one!!! Many of them live out of state and FB makes it easy to keep up with them because I can message them when it is convenient for me, and they can respond when it is convenient for them! In fact, my Daddy just got him a FB account and now I can talk to him at leisure! He lives 2000 miles away over seas in the Bahamas and trying to call the island is a 10 minute process that doesn't even work half the time. I love it! Now I can even talk to my Daddy more!!! |
Lucky you, my grandma's don't know a damn thing about computers :c
|
I'm eighteen and I don't have one, since I think facebook is a big waste of time, really. (...my parents annoyed the hell out of me with this site, by playing all their stupid games on it and talking about it nonstop. Seriously, when you get woke up at six o'clock in the morning because your mother has to make an emergency call to your aunt about an item or something on Treasure Madness, IT'S NOT COOL ANYMORE.)
However, I think you're at the age where you can be considered smart enough to not do anything stupid. If your parents have a facebook, they can basically stalk what you're doing anyway unless you choose for them to not be able to see your updates and stuff, and if you do that, well, they'll probably make you get rid of it. So if you really want one, you should tell them that they can trust you with it, and what's the point of them preaching all these lessons about not exchanging your personal information if you never actually get to prove to them that you know that and you don't do it? |
*Update*
Well recently I gathered up my courage after months of hinting at getting a facebook account, I asked her for one and she hit me with the "Wait til next year, you'll be 18 by, then" I almost jumped her. DAMN HER!!! I am never asking her for permission for anything online again. she just doesn't trust me even though i'm the most responsible out of her batch of childrens. She makes me angry some times and this is one of them. I guess i'll never join face book to keep her happy. |
Well,on one way she just cares about you,you know. tho it is a little unfair. But also i donīt see the point with facebook myself-since it seems to be alot of viruses going around there.
|
It's kind of irritating how many high schoolers are on FB because it was origianally created to be a COLLEGE network website.
Anyway yes I have one but I only friend people I know in RL on it, I don't give it out. I mainly have one because all my friends do. My best friend had trip pictures up on hers and that is why I was forced to get one in like 2007 because I had to log in to to see her pictures. I have gotten into some of the applications but I am not so into them anymore I just talk to my friends on it now. |
*sigh* I would only actually use it to talk family, but she doesn't believe.
|
Well, maybe you should try explaining it to her? And explaining you don't plan on talking to people you don't know?
I actually don't have one myself, mainly cause I just don't see the point. I haven't talked to my family since elementary school, and I really don't care about your moment to moment business. If I did, I'd call you and ask, you know? xD I'm actually surprised to see a few other people here don't have one. I thought I was one of the only ones who didn't see the point. ._. |
Really I never really saw the point of facebook and the only reason I even got one was for my now ex-girlfriend but after a while I enjoyed cause one thing I found a friend on there that moved and was able to talk to after like 3 yrs. But really they've made it were really anyone can haridly see anything if you choose not to show certian things so in the end its pretty safe.
|
Im starting not to like facebook. Because now my whole family is on there and I cant say anything offensive or talk about dirty jokes or anything else anymore. It s boring I might make a separate account.
