Has anyone else noticed that most avatar sites have names that end in a vowel (a vowel being the letters a, e, i, o, u and sometimes y)?
- Menewsha
- Gaia
- Solia
- Roliana
- Avaricia
- Kinsaki
- Zatarni
Et cetera.
Why do you think that is? Do you think that Gaia set the precedent or is it perhaps following real life examples of place names?
- America (United States of)
- Canada
- China
- Australia
- Russia
- Columbia
- Chile
- Mexico
And so on.
Or is it just that words ending in vowels seem more inviting and comfortable somehow?
What do you think? If you were creating your very own avatar site, what do you think you'd name this fictional land of yours, if indeed it was based on a place? Why?
I think I'd have no problem naming my site something lame like Cookie Land! All avatars would, of course, be cookies. You could change what kind of cookie you are =3

I think it's a sound sort of thing, as well as a linguistics sort of thing. In Latin female names end in 'a' and male names in 'us'. A lot of female names end in vowels in languages derived from Latin.
I know when we were naming Celainia we were looking for something that:
a. was unique
b. flowed nicely
c. has a pleasant sound and mental image

I guess vowels are just soft and inviting.
Though you do have to watch that you don't hit upon something potentially unpleasant, like Chloria. Sounds too much like chlorine or cholera.

@alexandrakitty - That would be why I said "most avatar sites" not ALL. It seems that most pixel forums follow a similar format. Something like Weeworld appears to be more of a commercial effort.
@Sarah - There are way too many such forums for it all to be coincidence. There is a definite theme going on. I believe that it might have something to do with trying to attract users with similar names to what avatar forum goers are used to. If all I ever knew of avatar forums was Gaia, then I'd probably be more likely to try something called Roliana or Solia over something called TinierMe.
Like Raine said, the names that end in vowels sound more inviting.

I think it's a sort of fad, like with real people names. Around the time I was born, all the girls names ended in "A". Marissa, Kayla, Karessa, Melissa. Now when my sister was born, all the girl names ended in a "y". Hailey, bailey, Kailey, etc. One person started it, everyone likes it for awhile.
Give it a couple years. All the new avatar sites will have a different ending.

I think because the "a" at the end of a word, and usually "ia" usually lends itself to the names of countries/continents/regions, etc. So it makes for an appropriate name for most sites that are based in various different worlds. It's not so much a fad, but it's part of language. :)

maybe thought processes didn't venture far from the tree? haha i don't know. personally i'd like to see site names that are less wtf-ish and out there, and don't end in a vowel at all.

Eternal Nox never ended in a vowel.. does that mean it's special? :heart: >w>;
But yeah, I get what you mean.. it is odd, but it does make the site name sound cooler. But then again, I think if site's work on thinking up a name, they can come up with cool site names that don't have to end in vowels either. *wonders where all the consonant love is* D:
