Lookin' for a Laptop

I'm currently shopping around for a laptop and I'm finding it quite troublesome. I was hoping that maybe there are some more knowledgeable Menewshans out there who could help me.

Here are some of the things I have had my eye on:
System Memory (RAM) of 3GB [at least]
Hard drive size of 250GB [at least]
Cost of no more than $600 [not including tax]

Heck, even if one of the first two things are what I shouldn't really be looking at, what should I be considering?

I also want to know what people think about AMD versus Intel processors. I've read through some articles but I find them somewhat hard to follow or outdated.

Another thing would be is there any particular brand that you support or have had a good experience with in the past?

Hopefully I have this in the right place. ^_^;

I use an Acer... It's got everything you specified and more, I don't know what it cost because it was a gift. But It should be cheaper in a country slightly more technologically advanced than New Zealand anyway.

What do you plan on using your laptop for? I never worry too much about hard drive size, since external hard drives and usb devices are rather cheap and expand the laptop's capacity by a lot. What are the current computers/laptops you have right now? Just to see where you can store things, whether it's movies or games or documents.

If you plan on taking the laptop outside a lot, then battery lifetime is something big to look at. Usually ones with smaller screens have better battery, but then there's also the graphic card that can suck up battery. NVIDIA (I believe that's what it is) is one of the best graphic cards out there, and you can ind them in Alienware as well as Acer laptops, usually more geared towards gaming. Processors are usually the same throughout most laptops, but if you like to watch youtube videos or care a lot about speed, look for that. When it comes to those, I always prefer Intel. Jut because it's easier to replace, they're usually thinner/lighter, and they haven't failed on me yet.

carzeebear: I've definitely looked into Acer cause it is one of the cheaper brands I've seen. I've also seen a lot of people around campus with them.

Deidara: It will mostly be for school right now but should I not be able to get one specifically for when I'm working after school, I want something that would be good for holding presentations and all the programs I may need [Microsoft office, Oracle, etc.]

I currently have a Dell desktop from probably about 2001. I don't know the specs on it.
