I'm thinking about finally investing in my very own laptop because my stepdad won't let me use the house computer anymore. :(

So here's my question to you guys: What is a good brand of laptop to buy? Any advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Depends on what you need to use it for. I just use mine for web browsing and writing. I have a Toshiba and it works for what I need it for. My only complaint is that the speakers aren't very loud. Personally though, I like Macs though for graphics and sound editing.

I personally love my Acer. It was my birthday present 2 years ago, since the desktop died. I've had very few problems with it.

I use it for everything. Intenet, photoshop designing, listening to music, watching movies... name it, if I've ever done it, I've done it on my laptop ^.^

Why won't he let you use the house computer?

I have a Macbook Pro and it works very well. I love it. I used to have a Dell laptop but it's so slow and kind of broken now. I have a Desktop too, it's a PC. But it's currently at my uncle's being worked on.

I have a small, notebook Acer, pretty much useful for going about the internet, and thats it. But it's lasted a while, and is pretty cheap as far as laptops go. I'd highly reccomend it. But it all really depends on what you use the most out of computers.

I have a Toshiba for many years now, used to be XP but since upgraded it to 7. Still works really well for all my purposes like internet surfing and gaming. My other laptop, an Acer, performs poorly in comparison.

I've got a dell laptop with 450Gb, i've got several games, MSN, lots and lots of pictures, Gimp, and use the internet all the time with multiple browsers up. It's got great sound and it sustains everything I do. Granted it lags ever now and then but other than that, i've had no trouble with it.

This belongs in the computers/video games subforum of media, so I'm going to move it on over there. :D

Thanks for the advice! I found a Toshiba online that I really like, so I'm going to start saving up my money for that. :)

PC has made me mad for years. I've spent at least $8,000 on laptops. I've owned 4 within my life, so when I hear all the great stuff about MAC. i was like. "Screw it! I'm getting a mac!" I have been SUPER happy with it.
I cannot stress how much my mac has saved my butt.

I've been deciding weather or not to respond to this topic.

What is best for you is largely dependent on what you want to do with it and how you use it. Which I haven't seen you really say what you use a computer for.

Unless you feel like giving us more information to go on this is what I'll say.

Desktops are all ways more powerful, much more reliable, generally have a longer life span, and are cheaper. On the flip side laptops are more portable but the chronic issue with laptops (PC or Mac) is gradually over time they have overheating issues.

As for a mac vs pc.. I admit choose to have Windows at home however my workplace uses macs. All arguments relating to OSs are based on opinions really. So I'll try and stick to the facts.

Money : Macs will all ways have a higher price tag. It's a fact for less money you can get a more powerful PC. Apple simply sells their hardware for a higher cost.

Upgrading : Well upgrading a PC usually means in about two years you spend $200 and it's good to go for another two years. Macs mean buying an entire new system after around 3 years, which will be more then $200.

Lifespan : Provided you don't abuse your system they will probably have about to same life span.

Virus's: The classic argument pro Macs is that PCs are terrible because of the thousands of virus's, while Macs have no virus's. This is actually untrue, Macs protect themselves from the virus's Apple doesn't want the public to know about through their system updates. On the flip side if you don't abuse your PC and don't do something stupid online with proper protection, a pc will be totally fine. I have had my system for 3 years and have never gotten a virus. As they say, don't be a fool, wrap your tool. So! If you are prone to PC virus's converting to Macs may be a good idea for you. PC users; the big trap is the "free software, screen savers, and no name anti-virus's".

Convenience : Ok every one knows if you all ready have apple products, everything is intergrated nicely and stuff just works with other stuff. That's a really nice positive for Apple. On the other hand there are other great brands that aren't a Apple Ipod. So what you all ready have can be a factor. PCs are fine too, it's just not all streamlined into one like the macs. (Cause PC has open rights for creating accessories, hardwares, and what ever else. Thats why PC stuff is cheaper. Open Market.)

This one is better!!!: Ok 10 years ago there where clear lines that one system had going for more then the other. Now a days, you can pretty much get anything a mac has on a pc, and visa versa. That all comes down to preference. Still notable : PC better for gaming, Macs do have a better/more colourful screen usually and are "better" designed for multimedia graphic programs (Adobe, GIMP, Video editing, etc.). I only "" That because I use both OSs for such things and no longer have a preference between when I'm working with it.

Ok I got to run, I hope this was an informational late addition to your thread.

Well, I had been on the hunt for a good laptop for about 2 months now. I'm a student and needed something portable for school as well as something compatible for gaming. BUT... when I went into BestBuy for like the third time, the salesmen conned me into getting a laptop that was *supposed* to have a super great graphics card in it. Well after taking it out of the box, and checking the specs, turns out it was a completely different computer. And the price tag was way too expensive for something so average. I had to use it for school since my home computer wouldn't work the proper student programs. So I ended up keeping it. o.O

It's a Dell Studio 1558. It's amazing how crappy the laptop screens are STILL. I had a laptop about 4 years ago and the screen viewing angles haven't changed one bit. They're still very limited. If you want to watch a movie, or whatever, good luck. You'll have to sit very still and be very centered. Lol.

So whatever you get, be careful of what you buy. Make sure on the box that it is all the same specifications as on the sales sticker. It will save you a lot of hassle.
