You mean...there's no thread for Kingdom of Loathing???

w00t! A thread starter is I.

Seriously tho, no one else plays?

CK 03-04-2011 01:19 AM

I play. :)

I haven't in a few weeks because I've been distracted by other things, but I enjoy the site. :)

jellysundae 03-04-2011 01:39 AM

Yeah, I like KOL (CK introduced me to it) I don't really know what I'm doing, but I find their humour deeply amusing.

Cardinal Biggles 04-14-2011 04:47 PM

Yes, it's highly entertaining. I am just not very well versed on how to utilize it.l

It's pretty basic. Well, since everything is stick drawings it's really basic, but you know what I mean.

You go to the various locations on the map and click on them. You have the adventures. You end up earning items or skills for each adven. Some items are building items and some are just there in their various utilities- food, clothing/armor, weapons etc.

There are mini quests all through the game and everything inevitably leads up to the one big quest- defeat the Naughty Sorcerer.

You defeat her. You see a shiny in the sky.

You go inside.

You reincarnate and the game begins again.

I don't play now as much as I used to, but I did love me some KOL once upon a time.

Cardinal Biggles 04-15-2011 03:58 AM

Well, i know how to utilize it, but apparently not effectively. Doing lots of the same tasks, and what not.

jellysundae 04-15-2011 02:31 PM

I'll admit to using google and the KOL wiki and so on a lot, because I can't tolerate trying a squillion different ways to get something to happen/work, or wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out what I have to do next.

The meat car quest is an excellent example of that. In the Koldfront forums their saying it's pretty obvious what order to put the parts together...yeah sure! If you're a mechanic maybe! That quest drove me nuts. I don't see how you could possibly find out about the stuff you need without help, like the hermit, and the chewing gum on a stick, and that annoys me really.

It takes sideways mental leaps that I'm just not capable of

CK 04-15-2011 08:51 PM

xD Yeah. It's one of the few games I play where I don't feel like a loser for using a walkthrough for.... every time I play. ::laughs::

I do try to play it just using my own brain and I have some degree of success about 45% of the time. But there's always some tricky bit thrown into the mix that's utterly not obvious except maybe to someone who knows a particular obscure meme/song/show and can connect it to the site somehow.

Don't get me wrong - I think that it's great how it's done. But if I had to figure this all out on my own, I'd be SoL. xD

Elluh 04-16-2011 01:08 AM

Hmm, I've never heard of it. :o
But it sounds interesting! :>
I'm still trying to get that minecraft game...

jellysundae 04-16-2011 09:42 PM

I like Minecraft a lot :ninja:

But yeah, CK, KOL's developers are clever bastards xD I love all the pop culture refs. When I saw the lemon party slot machine I couldn't stop laughing  But one of my biggest favourites so far had been the BASIC elemental in the defiled cyrpt. Of course I can't remember what it said now, and can't go back there to find out, but it's something like:

10 PRINT I'm going to kill you worthless human
20 GOTO 10

And that made me laugh, a lot

Explodey 04-18-2011 08:03 AM

The one thing I don't like is the quest for the macguffin. That's -fairly- recent, tedious and mandatory. I was playing the game before it existed and I don't like having to go thru it one bit. I've only reincarnated twice since they added it, as I'm just trying to avoid doing it.

jellysundae 04-18-2011 04:52 PM

I've just been given that quest

Golden Goose 04-18-2011 08:15 PM

I just joined that site, and oh lord, it is lulzapalooza. The Toot Oriole almost made me pee a little.

CK 04-19-2011 12:13 AM

I'm stuck on the MacGuffin quest. Just the very last bit where you fight a badguy in a pyramid. I still have the walkthrough bit bookmarked so I can pick it up right where I left off. I used up half my turns for that day trying to beat the stupid guy. And then I think I spent the next three days trying to beef up before trying again. (Only I haven't tried again, I've taken a break from mild frustration.)

Explodey 04-19-2011 06:16 AM

I follow the walkthru, but for me the hard part is remembering the symbols on the bottles. I'm fairly sure it changes and is random, but even if it has a precise pattern I have a memory like a seive. I've never been a fan of puzzles anyway.

jellysundae 04-21-2011 12:10 AM

I'm stuck with making a dingy dinghy :( I go to the hermit to get the planks. I bought another hermit pass, and some more chewing gum on a stick, but he's sending me away :(

I think he likes doohickeys? You have to have some item in your inventory to trade him for it. You can get those from fishing in the sewer with the gum on a stick tho.;)

jellysundae 04-21-2011 07:40 PM

I tried using the gum and offering him what I got too (was a saucepan) he wasn't interested.

CK 04-22-2011 12:04 AM

No - he only likes useless things, not things that are useful. xD

jellysundae 04-22-2011 01:13 PM

I'm lost :( I thought the gum on a stick was the useless thing ._.

Ah, I used a bunch of them at once and got some worthless things :D

I think the worthless things are actually useful somewhere too, but I think it's doohickeys and googaws? that the hermit wants? I forget, there's a tutorial/walkthru thing at Main Page - TheKolWiki but it's not the easiest thing to navigate.

CK 04-24-2011 01:24 AM

Here's the whole quest breakdown: Quest for the Holy MacGuffin - TheKolWiki

I think you'll have to use links within the article to get more information on any particular bit you're having trouble with. But Explodey's right that he wants those particular items. Or something named similarly. Last I remember, they were identified in the descriptions as a "worthless item".

The Kingdom of Loathing?...
Never heard of it.
What kind of site is it/what's it about?

It is an ongoing quest game, text and stick-figure-drawing based. Tho primitive in appearance, its appeal is in its sense of humor. But don't take my word for it. Go to http://kingdomofloathing.com and see for yourself! :)

Cardinal Biggles 04-26-2011 09:15 AM

I think I'm still doing something with the friars.
Ryuk looks adorable, CK.
