Problem getting oblivion to work on pc.

I downloaded the game *legally from gamestop, mind you* and when I try to load it up it keeps saying "encountered a problem and needs to close" anyway to fix that? Assuming some people have played elderscrolls on pc~

I'll probably just get trolled again, but whatever.

Can you give us some more information? We need to know your OS, if you're 32- or 64-bit, what your computer's specs are, etc. It could be a million problems without knowing more about what you're running, unfortunately.

I more than likely need to upgrade the system but...(pretty sure I need a chip upgrade )

1 GB memory.

Intel Processor CPU 4 3.00 GHZ

video card: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

DRiver: ialmnt5.sys

Color: 32-bit.

Not sure what else..oh it's also a Dell (probably not suited for playing games anyway.)

Here's a link of the technical specs required to run Oblivion.

You can find most of your computer's technical specs by following these steps:
  • To find your processor, RAM, and system type, right click on My Computer and select "Properties".
  • Look to the left of this screen and click "Device Manager" to find your graphics card. It's listed under "Display Adapters".
  • For a more advanced look at your specs, go to Start>All programs> Accessories> System tools>System Information. This will probably be more than you need to know.
  • Finally, hit alt+ctrl+del and open the task manager. Switch to the Performance tab and count the number of green and black boxes you see on the very top row (the top row only). This is the number of cores your processor has.

If you exceed or meet all of those, go on to the next step and update all your drivers. Let me know if you need help doing this.

How far does it let you get before it quits on you? The installer or the game itself could be corrupted - it's pretty common among downloaded games. Try uninstalling it, redownloading it, and reinstalling it.

Well I installed the game and everything when I click on play is when the error message appears, I'll try uninstalling it too. Like right after the game loads up. Do you think I should go buy the physical copy if this doesn't work?

Oh and my OS is Windows XP I forgot that.

Your video card might be the problem. It doesn't have the required 128MB; it steals from the system memory instead, so it doesn't meet the minimum specs required to play Oblivion.

Please use the above instructions I've provided to check your graphics card, and we'll rule that out as a problem.

As a side note, I said this in the Skyrim forum too, but you won't be able to play Skyrim on your computer. Save the $60 and buy it on a console!

I know xd I don't plan on doing that I mean I can wait until the price does down if I plan to ever get the pc version, but console first. Yeah I checked my card and It isn't any listed in the requirements. But they are expensive O.o

You can get a pretty cheap copy of Oblivion just if you want to check if it WILL play off a disc - try going somewhere like a Best Buy where you can rent a game for a dollar.

Otherwise, you might want to wait to get a new computer. The problem with PCs is how soon they go obsolete. ^^; It's up to you whether it's worth upgrade it part for part (if you don't know how to do this safely, please get it done for you, it's easy to wreck your whole computer), or just save up for a new one.

Alura--x--Uneii 02-05-2012 08:24 PM

Probably. I think it really is just the video card, I'll see about replacing it and if it doesn't work it's probably the game itself. Sadly no stores around here sell it anymore and I'd have to buy it online and I don't want to wait for it x.x

I don''t know which card I should get though..

My personal recommendation, having tried several brands of cards, is an Nvidia. There's a nifty little tool here to help you out.

Alura--x--Uneii 02-05-2012 08:37 PM

Hmm I'm thinking of the 6800 since it seems to be going cheap, and apparently is Med-range so it should be able to play it, also this PC is a 2005 Oblivion is a 2006/7 game I think? I wonder if I need to get a new pc or just keep it as is.

Anaxilea 02-05-2012 08:44 PM

My personal suggestion would be to get a new computer. The xp OS is pretty old and if you want to keep to date with PC games, you won't be able to play on that system for very long. ^^;

In any case, I hope I helped you out a little. Good luck!

Alura--x--Uneii 02-05-2012 08:46 PM

I don't have the money for a new computer but yeah, thanks~ I may need to use something other than a dell, maybe an HP?

Anaxilea 02-05-2012 08:57 PM

One more tool to help you out.

Just search Oblivion, allow your browser to run the app, and wait a minute or two for the results. I just tested it myself, so I can verify that it works and is virus free.

Alura--x--Uneii 02-05-2012 09:03 PM

Ohh..if I do need a new pc I think I'll build one, my Dad knows more about them than I do.
