I adore both games!
I like L4D2 better cause it has the Katana and harder levels, but the characters from L4D1 are still my favorite <3

They go on sale on steam fairly often, I got mine for 6$ each, and my boyfriend got 'em both for 10$ in a package deal~ You should buy 'em and give 'em a try =D

I really dislike L4D2. In L4D, the specials don't appear as often, and you actually freak out when they do.
In L4D2, they pop up so often it's just meh. I think L4D2 lost the charm L4D had. Also, the community playing L4D is a lot better than L4D2.
I also like the L4D characters heaps.

Bill is just damned awesome. It really makes the last campaign in L4D sadder than it already was when you understand that Zoey and Bill never made up after their fight.

I've only played and own left 4 dead 2.
I think it's absolutely fantastic though.
I just wish my friends would come over a little more often so that i won't have to deal with how stupid my AI partners are, lol.
My favorite campaign is probably Hard rain though, the first time i played it i nearly crapped my pants when i ran into 3 witched at the same time in the cornfields, XD.

The original L4D will always be my favorite. The second one was just a really expencive add on.
The original had realism, the specials only show up here and there. In the second game, I felt desensitized to zombies because of how often they tried to squeeze every single new special infect into the level.

Both are good, but I like the first. Better characters, better zombies, better experience.

I've never had the joy of playing the first one...
A lot of people say they like it better though.
I do agree that the special infected show up a lot.
It'a kind of crazy when you're trying to fight a tank and then a smoker and a spitter show up to help make you run in the other direction and let your partners die lol.
