Advance how? Do they jump forward too dramatically? I wonder why I'm so curious about this, I don't have any vested interest in programming [lol]

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 01:26 AM

haha it's fine :)

no i just think it's the method of advancing, it's probably more difficult with gree or something. i haven't tried the versions on iphones so i don't really know the differences. i just know i'm really annoyed by the gree ones.

Cardinal Biggles 05-05-2013 01:37 AM

Ah, so like, what action is the turning point in the game play, as opposed to another action? You're going to have to spell it out, I don't know anything about these games and how they "advance". Or rather, I only have the dimmest sense of it.

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 02:43 AM

err, i'm actually really not sure...i wonder if google has answers...

ReiyukaE 05-05-2013 12:28 PM

Google has ALL THE ANSWERS. :D

But no, Aoi, I very much agree on the android games. :/ Not only do most of them barely work on my cellphone for some obnoxious reason or other, the story is like... it's like a mass-produced thing. Same basic outline, with a different setting. It gets drab and dull.
You could argue that most dating sims are like that, but for the most part they actually DO have a twist somewhere or other. The Android ones are just... brain-killing.

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 02:33 PM

i mean the artwork is nice, but yea, they seem very repetitive from what i've seen from some of my friends' screenshots. i also prefer the computer or like console ones because the ones for the phone only give you a set amount of moves you can make before you need to recharge or something.

ReiyukaE 05-05-2013 02:37 PM

That, or they only allow you to get the introduction with each guy, but when you start to get ahead in the game, they start charging you per suitor you'd like to pursue. Or at least, taht's happened to me before. Suffice it to say, I was not a happy camper? xD

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 06:01 PM

yeaaa, they make you pay separately for each route D: that's no funnnn. if i'm gonna pay for the game might as well make me buy the whole game instead of making the intro free and then having to pay separately for everything after the intro ):<

ReiyukaE 05-05-2013 07:02 PM

EXACTLY!
It's especially frustrating if it turns out to be an ok game, looks like it'll be fun... and then you suddenly have to choose which guy you want to pursue?! I like to browse a bit before I shop, okay. /fehs/ Part of the fun in these games is exploring all the different routes.

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 09:18 PM

that is completely true!

haha, yayy, i've found an otome buddy who thinks the same way i do xD

waytodawn 05-05-2013 11:45 PM

I've never played any of these games except for like Harvest Moon...owo
Which ones should I try? Any suggestions? o3o

Aoi Kazuya 05-05-2013 11:51 PM

hmm...well it depends, free game or something you'd be willing to pay for?

waytodawn 05-06-2013 01:48 AM

Free games, lol. Any good ones? :3

Aoi Kazuya 05-06-2013 01:53 AM

honestly the only one i can think of off the top of my head is RE: Alistair ++

uhm here's a Zeiva game called X-note, i haven't played it but Zeiva games are always fun :) I'm not sure if this is the demo or not but yea: X-note

or you can always play the demo for dandelion which is really nice~ Dandelion

...or that pigeon dating sim demo >.>

Cardinal Biggles 05-06-2013 03:00 AM

Ah, so it's they way they unfold? The story lines end up being to similar to each other?

Paranoid Doll 05-06-2013 04:04 AM

o 3 o i love otome games, but a very VERY small tiny
genre of the otome game... the BL game part~ * o *

i just don't find being female in a game very attractive
at all. o x oU it could be that i'm a gay guy, and really
only find man on man attractive... but yeah.

anyhoo, i play BL games. o 3 o <33

i mostly play on the computer because that's really the
only platform that i like... i don't like the iphone because
it makes me pay for other endings, extra content, or
to play more than one chapter at a time.

/i'm an addict

waytodawn 05-06-2013 04:42 AM

Just finished the Re: Alistair one and omg.... I'm addicted, and BL ones!? O: Link me!!!

Paranoid Doll 05-06-2013 04:56 AM

O u O <33

BL games of course! i can link you to the japanese
sites, because they don't have american versions
of the websites~ > o > <33

there are several companies that i like. o u o like
spray and Nitro+CHiRAL~

o 3 o

DRAMAtical Murder website~

that is my favorite, out of many. o u o <33

The Wandering Poet 05-06-2013 09:45 AM

I prefer storyline and emotional content over which gender is what. o.o My first Dating sim spoiled me... so if I don't end up feeling connected to the story on a personal level it just doesn't feel real enough [lol]

I also don't mind mature dating sims if the content is tactfully included, otherwise it can kill the story. I think just about every dating sim on newgrounds fails to do that XD

Hows the storyline in that one you linked Doll?

Paranoid Doll 05-06-2013 10:57 AM

ahhhhh~ i'm gender biased just because females weird me out… again,
uuuuber long story. o u oU and i feel like how you feel. if i can't connect
with the person i'm playing, i can't do it. > _ > and i completely disconnected
with most due to the gender of the player. u _ u again, personal reasons.
x u x <33 so gender is a HUGE part for me. o 3 o as well as the gender of
the love interests… > _ >U i'm really picky. q u qU umyuuu. gender is a huge
hurdle for me in real life. (trans, ftm, sex change planned type stuff.)
(and nothing against females! you can be female and that's fine~ most of
my friends are~ o u oU i'm not sexist, being female just isn't for me. just a note~)

i stay away from the mature portions as much as i can. i avoid them entirely
if i can. > _ >U i mean, if it happens, it happens and i can just cover the
screen and pretend i'm not paying attention. lol x u xU which is the sad danger
of playing BL games. o x o i would love more that gear towards a more shounen
ai type feeling... but even hetero dating sims have their dangerous moments.

i actually love the story thus far. o 3 o it's more of a visual novel, so less of
a dating sim and more plot based~ which i LOVE. i ADORE this. it's more
reading than a manga, with the illustrations that i love. aldkjlfasdfjasdjf i
could grow up to do this type of illustration/story telling~ * 7 *

but the plot is really nice. i'm about nine hours in with nothing but beautiful,
growing plot in front of me to devour. o 3 o <33 i had a scare about seven
hours in, that one of my four options i'd had thus far had lead me down the
wrong path, but i was thankfully wrong! i continued my story~ * 7 * <33

too bad DMmd isn't released in america yet in an official english translation..
i could share the beauty with you guys. q _ q
my advantage is that even though i can't read it, i can understand what they're
saying… and i can make out most of the simple hiragana characters. o u oU

Aoi Kazuya 05-06-2013 12:25 PM

I haven't played any BL ones personally but I've seen a few I'd like to try out :) But maybe one day when I can actually read hiragana, haha.

Gender...hmm...I don't think I really care about the gender that I'm playing~ If it's a female, if she has a horribly bland attitude to everything and is just plain useless I just don't pay much attention to her, and i end up playing just to get the guys' personalities so i can pair them with one another in my head [sweat]

I think with most otome games that I know of, the fans are mostly girls who like pairing the guys together xD

as for explicit things...the only ones i've seen are just scenes where the characters are about to do it and then after they're done. it goes to white screen and i think there were a couple sound effects  nothing too bad.

MinakoAxule 05-06-2013 03:20 PM

I'm trying to play a game that can go four ways, Boy X Boy, Boy X Girl, Boy X Brother, Boy X Sister... The problem it's really hard to do the Boy X Boy, and almost impossible to do Boy X Girl. The other two are easy to do I always seem to get to it because I accidently shelter my brother too much lol.

It's called Prince Maker: Braveness it's free and there is an english version floating around. I'll get the link if anyone is interested.

Paranoid Doll 05-06-2013 04:58 PM

aoi;; you should play some~ although you should check the
rating of it... there are a lot of mature ones out there... > _ >
with a lot of hard themes. (can't mention any on mene, against
the ToS) but yeah. o u oU just be very careful in the world of BL.

oooh… aoi, i wish i had shipping goggles like a lot of otome
fans do. > o > i just can't get into it like that. lol q u q U i'm a
big purveyor of, if it's not what i like/want, i won't bother with it…
which results in me not watching a bunch of movies, anime,
and shows for fear of wasting my time on it… i'm more of a
creator, actually. o u oU

and we need to refrain from mentioning the more, ah, explicit
parts of the games or we'll have to remove our thread from
mene. x u x umyuuu ~ > o > i was told to be careful to not
discuss it.

minako;; oh~ while that sounds cool and all minako, i don't
think you should link it... it's against mene's ToS to post
a link to a hacked or illegally modified version of the game…
which is why i linked DMmd to the official japanese wesbite.
(there are patches floating around, but it's against mene ToS
for me to link it… i don't think i can really talk about it either. o u oU)

ReiyukaE 05-06-2013 07:16 PM

Yay, more people joining the discussion!
Honestly I'm so surprised by how many people enjoy these games, and that in itself surprises me (because why should I be surprised?! Really, feh). But it's really fun to share sources and stories and what not, so just... bless this topic.

Anywho.

@Paranoid Doll - considering your stance regarding gender and what not, I can absolutely understand your preference in BL games. I'll keep an eye out for any interesting ones I happen across, that keep away from the "dangerous" scenes. ;D It's a shame that it stops you from exploring things that you might really enjoy, but, so be it~ It all sounds very complicated, and I just hope that you've not had such negative experiences that it will forever make gender an issue for you.

@MinakoAxule - it sounds like a good game! But considering that Doll probably does have a point, we can all just use our google-fu to search for it. ;D
It's a weird option to me, the boy x sister or boy x brother thing, but then again, it's such a recurring theme in anything Japanese that I shouldn't be too surprised.

As a whole I agree with most of you that the story must appeal to me. The actual character that I'm playing, doesn't make much of a difference to me. Of course it's easier to put myself in the shoes of a girl, but aside from that it's not really much of a difference - most games allow a range of replies going from being really harsh and mean to being overly sugary sweet... and I can always find a response that suits -me- amongst the options given.
The love interests are a different thing, though. I very much like it when there's an option to go after various genders, because it changes the gameplay and the approach to it quite a lot.

The main aspect DOES remain the story, though I don't actually really expect some HUGE massive story in every otome game I play. For visual novels, that's different... for an actual otome game though, I must admit that my love interests are more important than the underlying story, quite often.

When I was looking at the links you guys posted, I stumbled back unto the Ren'ai archive... might be something worth while to search through, no?

The Wandering Poet 05-06-2013 07:41 PM

Ah yeah Visual novels are amazing ^^

Currently waiting until I am living on my own before ever trying to do a new one though XD too much looking over my shoulder [rofl]
