Final Fantasy: Old School versus Now
I have heard many times that those who started playing Final Fantasy back in the day refuse to play any of the games after the 7th one. Why is this? Are the ones afterwards not well thought out? There must be a reason. Is the 1-7 better than the 8-now? Or the other way? Or are they all good? I would love to hear your side of this. Please share your comments!

I didn't so much refuse to play anything past 7... moreso I refuse to replay anything past 7...
The game felt like it was more about fancy graphics and less about story after that :( Plus FF8, while it had a good story for a while just left me thinking "What the hell am I playing?" |
Ah I see. I've only played FFX and FFX-2. I loved the story line and the way the gameplay worked. It allowed me to go answer the phone or whatever during a fight without losing the battle. Also I just really liked the story line, the aeons, and the graphics. Yes, the graphics were a big part of it. When I had upgraded my first aeon, she was more powerful than the powerful aeons and her attacks were gorgeous.
|
Their attacks get prettier if you upgrade them? o.o
|
They can naturally level up in a way and gain new attacks. The most powerful one for the first aeon is very pretty. I just added more points to her to make her defense better so she was harder to defeat... most players would have used those precious points to make a more powerful aeon more powerful.
|
Well what's the point in powering up something that's already amazing? o.o
|
lol, because even the most amazing aeons have powerful enemies to fight... the final boss before entering the end game is a real pain. The end game itself is pretty easy. And the story has some interesting twists there that really shocked me.
|
Never actually saw the endgame of FFX... I ended up getting stuck at that... whatever that game was called XD
|
I haven't played the other FF games, but I liked that one when I played it.
|
Storyline-wise FF7 was the deepest in my opinion, but also 3/6, 4 and 5 also had some really good story.
(And just bear with Kefka's laugh in 3/6) |
Oh dear... now I am worried. I do wish to go from FF and work my way through each of them. I was told I could with emulators, but have no clue what those are or how they work. Someone offered some advice once and I tried it... the emulator or whatever I did (followed their directions exactly) didn't work... so... whatever. Will have to figure out which game console I need and then go find the game somehow.

I've played and completed FFI, FFIII, FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFX-2, FFXII, FFXIII.
I'm old ([:P]), so I was one of those people who played Final Fantasy back in the day, when it was on the NES and the SNES. I think it's pretty ridiculous when you have some people who call themselves 'purists', but in truth get so locked in their opinion of what something should be, that they refuse to acknowledge the good that comes with change. -- Of course though, on the flip side of that, change is just not for everyone. That said, I think I may skew toward old school. Old school, in my opinion, being up until FFX. After that installment, the series went through a lotta changes. XI and XIV most notably, as they're MMOs. I'm more a solitary gamer, so i'm not into MMOs. The things I missed most in FXII and FFXIII were the turn based battles, which i've always enjoyed. But for some reason, at some point, suddenly the idea of a turn based RPG was looked down upon. Everything had to be active battle. Now active battle can be fun, but I have to admit I do miss that aspect. Also, in XII I did long for the spectacle of summons, which seemed diminished in the game. But through all that i've still remained a fan. Comparing the later games, I do pine a bit for the whimsy in the Nintendo years. FFIX did regain some that whimsy, though. [:P] My favorite of the series, by and by, is FFVIII. ;D |
I like the emulators that you just load the ROM like any other kind of file...
Snes9x is probably the one you would want. Just open it, File - Load - Game automatically starts playing and your only problem will be learning what key is what XD |
I agree with Captain Howdy. I like the turn based fights and spectacular summons. After that, I haven't the experience to comment.
I think I might have used that one... the screen popped up with a message saying without a playstation, this was illegal. Confused but okay. Will get a playstation and try again? |
Well I'm not really sure... I expect they just want you to buy the game since it's in the "pirating" category...
But to be honest... just finding the ROM can be hard let alone finding the game sometimes... @ Howdy - So true, I loved turn based combat :D (especially for FF Tactics [drool]) |
I wouldn't mind just getting the game. However if push comes to shove... I'm content with the PS2 games and PS3 games... I like FFX and want to own it for myself. I also want Assassin's Creed and the Elder Scrolls... but that takes serious money to set up and I don't have even a TV so...

I've always loved the summons. <3
It was also sad in FFXII that all the old staples were replaced. I looked forward to seeing the new incarnations of Shiva and Ifrit and Bahamut and Odin and the like, only to find they had all been replaced. D: ---------- Post added 04-27-2013 at 03:08 AM ---------- @The Wandering Poet ~ FF Tactics was so much fun. Convoluted story, but great gameplay. [lol] |
WHAT!?! They took out Shiva, Ifrit, Odin and Bahamut?! That's.... that's just... *cries in a corner*
|
Sad, but true. ;~;
*hands a hanky* |
Did they at least keep the others?
I've known Shiva and Odin for years... T_T I couldn't care less about Ifrit but whatever... |
*Feels like crying* No Shiva???? I named all my aeons after pets I had had... so... I kinda got attached to them despite them being fictional characters.
|
haha... I never named anything... I didn't even name my pokemon [ninja]
I simply clung to my childhood favorites like Odin and Bahamut... then Shiva... I kept her around because she was such a pain in the butt to capture in FF4... (I think it was 4) |
lol, that works... I would name them again if I could remember who was who the first time...
the first was Chinedu, after my baby horse that died the second was Samson, also a baby horse that died The unicorn was Peanut... after my horse that I trained at camp There was one named Jasper... after the first horse I trained... I think that one was the lady one... And there was Cheers, after my parakeet... but who was he??? Oh I don't know nor remember now... |
Some of those are pretty good... I'm bad at picking names... I'll spend days if not months making a name...
|
I can see that... It was nice having my previous horses and pets used. For instance Peanut is a terribly shy and skittish horse who got bullied by the others and is partially blind... if she wasn't partially blind, I think she would have been so much more happier. She was a young thing full of beauty and life. Having her name on an aeon was kinda like closure... and now that she had been put down, it means all that much more to me. She is remember by me as being strong and powerful, the very thing she wasn't in real life.
