I was thinking about some of the old forum games I played back in the day (high school ) and my memories turned to mafia. The only two requirements were a computer and internet. A game that left you baffled for a few days, and then got intense for the rest of the time it was played.
If a person was to start a mafia game... say on Menewsha... how do you think that they should go about it? Think carefully... there are people in different timezones and though everyone loves a good game... it is easy to have misunderstanding of the rules and actions.

I am not even sure what a mafia game is. Could you give some more description of it please?

I'm curious about this too. Sometimes folks mention wanting to play mafia in event feedback, but I don't even know what it is. How does it work? :)

Oh! I am so glad you asked ^_^ Sorry, didn't realize that you didn't know. It is a take of the old party game.
The last time I played it online, there is a moderator who assigns roles and sends PMs of each character role to those participating. The basic gameplay is that there are 4 mafia members (unless a lot of people are playing, then there can be 5) and the rest of the people are town members. Only the mafia characters know who the others are. Your goal is to lynch all of the other members. If there are only 3 town members left, mafia automatically wins. You lynch a person by vote.
There are two phases of the game. The Day phase is usually 72 hours long. The people talk and hang out. The first day is confusing since you have nothing to go on. So people lynch generally someone at random or someone they think is suspicious. You vote in bold so that the moderator can see it. When there is a majority vote on one person (the moderator will give the specific number that kills) then that person is dead and the day ends. The moderator writes up creative scenes that give details of who that person's character was. Blue is town. Red is mafia.
Phase two is night which is about 36 hours long. Only those who died can talk during this time. Everyone else, if they have night actions can PM them to the moderator. For instance, the four mafia decide on one person to kill. The doctor (town) decides on one person to protect... and he can't protect the same person back-to-back. The cop (town) can investigate and learn something about one person of his choice. If he learns someone is mafia, he will try the next day to talk people into killing that person.
It is a bad idea to give away identities. First, if the mafia learn who the doctor or cop is, they can nightkill that person. Second, it is a rule that you can't quote the moderator. Or tell the thread your role unless you are being voted on for being lynched. One tactic to figuring out who is mafia is if a town member is lynched, looking at seeing who voted for that person or just "jumped on the bandwagon." However I played a game once where a mafia member specifically never voted for the person being lynched and he was the last mafia to be caught.
Sometimes, people will put a theme to it... for instance Star Wars. The mafia have sith lord names and the town people have jedi names...

That is cool. Also sounds a tad like the Assassin game that Knerd makes during some Halloween events.
It would be fun to play, though hard to get everyone together at a time to play it without any event going on.
Or (using the Assassin thread as a reference) if someone does not post once during the 72 hour period or the 36 hour period, they get automatically lynched.
Overall sounds really fun though if a lot of members join and are dedicated to replying at least a couple times during the time periods.

The games I played had a rule that if there wasn't a lynch coming up and someone hadn't posted in 72 hours... that they could be mod-killed instead... that way someone died at the end of the day. Generally more than 12 people don't play any single game.
I think it would be fun to have a basic game going, a theme game going, and a modified game (where almost everyone has a night action instead of just the mafia, doc, and cop). That way three games going allows 36 people to play.

That sounds really fun! Having more night actions would be really great also!
Now we just have to recruit more people! ^_^

Tis so true. I have tried posting a thread with rules for how I thought it could work here in the roleplaying forum... no takers... guess I should have tried the games forums.

I'd be interested in doing this. I sometimes play a game called The Resistance which is pretty similar and doesn't need a moderator (although if you played it online, you would).

I've been interested to see how this worked, also after seeing it mentioned in the event feedback. We're always on the lookout for games we can play; both during events and at other times. So I'll have to read your description once my brain is awake, it certainly isn't at the moment, it just looked at the text and responded with "..."

You know, I would like playing it as a roleplay! I never check the RP forums though, so I probably wouldn't find it unless I was directed to it from elsewhere.
Does the version you use have more roles than just the mafia and the townsfolk? I've also played Werewolves which is the same game but with extra roles for the townsfolk, like the seer who can look at a person's role card every round, the potions master who can heal one person and kill one person during the game, the hunter who automatically kills someone when he is killed, and many more. That might lend itself more to a roleplay. ;)

The way I moderate the games, I can't resist putting in more roles for the town people. Or just more roles in general. But perhaps a basic came for starters to introduce the game would be appropriate? I would love to do it as a roleplay, but honestly I am uncertain how it would work. It would probably be themed after the movie Clue.

Oh, did you make character roles? That's so cool! I didn't see that in the game rules. So are we going to get to know what roles are in the game? We obviously can't know who controls them, but it's helpful to know what they are.

I won't be telling the group the character roles in advance. In the first thread is a link to the mafia wiki... so you can see what the possibilities are. Basically everyone is thrown together with no clue who is what or how many bad guys there are. It is part of the fun.
