This is a card game that has been out for years. It was created by Wizards of the Coast.
Here is the Official Site

Anyone else play? Have fun discussing!
>> How long have you been playing for?
>> What types of decks do you like?
>> What are some of your favorite cards?
>> Other favorites? (sets, card type, creature class, favorite Planeswalker, etc)
>> Have you been to/won any tournaments?
>> etc.

Other GREAT Links!

Deck Builder/Tester (If you make an account, you can save your decks you create.)

Card Pricer
List of Sets that are Legal in Tournaments

Character Types (What type are you?)
Timmy, Johnny, and Spike
Melvin and Vorthos

Character Type Short SummaryX

Timmy = Runs large cost, large power/toughness creatures and spells. He wins big and stomps his opponent.

My husband and I enjoy going to the tournaments, playing with friends, creating decks, etc. I have been playing for years casually and tournament playing for around 2 years now.
I am currently using a Spirit/Spirit Token deck. I placed in a Saturday tournament with it too. By placing, I got 3 booster packs.
Last Friday, we went to the Pre-Release for Dragon's Maze set and played in the Draft. It was lots of fun!
We are already working on some new deck ideas with the new cards.

My friends love this game. I tried to get into it, but I just hate the idea of spending so much money on it every time new cards come out. The game itself is pretty fun to play though and so is the deck-building part, so if you just build your deck out of proxies to play casually with friends, it's great!

If you're into deck-builders, you should try Android: Netrunner. Netrunner is a bit like Magic in how it's played, but it's not a collectible card game, it's what Fantasy Flight Games has named a Living Card Game, which just means that when you buy sets and expansions for it, they all come with the same stuff so you know exactly what you're getting.

There is also a great deck-builder called Dominion, in which the deck-building is actually done not before but while you play! A set of cards is out on the table and everyone starts with the same basic deck of ten cards, and you just add to it turn by turn to make it better. You can buy cards that are worth victory points to help you win the game, cards that are worth money to help you afford more expensive cards later, or you can buy action cards which special abilities to help you do a variety of things. Whoever has the most victory points at the end (determined by certain piles running out) wins!

I mostly collect for fun. I enjoy the art. Can i also play. why absolutely i can. But i refuse to get into it as a comppetitive thing.

My current favorite deck is a mixed goblin deck. All about just sending swarms of goblins out. Trying to stay above 10 health while getting everyone below 10. and than just killing everything leavng myself with a couple health and winning the game. (used it in a multiple player free for all)

I've got quite a few decks though.

Best part of magic.. one of the artists was my art teacher <3

Edit:
as a side note to what Vox said.
Sominion is an amazing game. Just saying.

@ Vox - Yes, it can be a lot of money. I put a little bit of my tax return money into the cards each year. If you can trade the cards you have for ones you need, it makes it better. Tournaments cost $7, so if you win 4 booster packs, you make $16, so that is a $9 profit. Though my husband played and didn't place last night, so it was only a $2 profit.
Yes, deck building is So Much Fun! I love to make lots of different combos. It is great when they work out to your advantage!
Those sound neat. I will have to check them out sometime.

@ Shadami - Yes, the art is really lovely. Though on cards that are meant to be gruesome, they are really that.
Goblin decks can be pretty good at popping out an army. Though cards like Supreme Verdict, Terminus, and others similar to that can be hurtful to your deck. That is when smart sideboarding comes into play.
That is very cool that one of the artists used to be your art teacher. Very neat connection!

both of those are quite recent cards right? I think hubby and i ahve maybe.. one packet from the newer sets. I can't even remember when i stopped. because i just got annoyed with the constant "omg you have to be in the most current cards or you're not a magic player."
you must follow all the super extremem rules
you have to act like you're playing in a tournament.

i about gag around most magic players. I mean... usually they're good people. (i almost said guys.. because i was literlly hanging out at all these places in syracuse at pauper tournements and small stuff, not big tournaments) and i hung out with them all the time. But the obsession over every detail of the game gets to me most days.

I prefer to play casually, just for fun. If i win win, id i lose i lose. it shoudlnt' be that bad. i LOVE playing with just friends who have that same mentality. or can get into that mentality.

Yeah, they are newer cards.
My husband and I just recently got back into playing after not playing for about one or two years.
Those are horrible comments, no one should make those. They do have tournaments for the older decks too, though those include all the sets from what is not Standard, to the very first sets they released. So some of those decks have turn three or four kills! O.O (Cause they were just that good!)
The tournaments we go to are the Standards and have about 20 people max playing each Saturday. (Usually not even that many.)
Yeah, card games are meant to be that, games. The players should have fun playing it, not focus on winning or loosing.
I like to try out different combinations, which is probably why I like to come up with so many deck ideas. It is just lots of fun to do different things against different decks! ^_^

@dragoness: I have a friend who is really into Magic; he is really good and plays a tournament every week, and between all the money he makes from that and what he spends on cards, he probably breaks even.

I agree! It's a kind of puzzle solving.

@Shadami: It is a great game. Two summers ago, I played Dominion online so much that I got kind of sick of it. I got so familiar with all the combinations of cards and which strategies prevail in which situations that there wasn't much to learn. I still play with my friends once in a while, but I kind of ruined the fun by getting so much better at the game than them. >< I do want to get the new Dark Ages expansion though. I was really excited as they were releasing news about it, and then I just kind of forgot because we bought a bunch of other games.

@dragon
Yeah... i know standard decks that can win turn 4 or even 3... my friends are ridiculous magic players.

@Shadami: Haha, some people get it faster than others! I've seen several stages of learning with that game. First, everyone sees all these action cards like the villages and Laboratory that you can just keep chaining a bunch of, so they think it is best to just buy a ton of those cards and see how many they can play in one turn. But they often ignore silver and gold and end up with just four or five treasure at the end of every turn... which is enough to buy more of the action cards they are chaining, so the cycle continues. Then one person realizes that he or she can beat everyone else by simply buying only treasure cards and no actions. This is usually the point where people say, "What a dumb game! There are all these action cards and none of them help you win!" But they do help - if you know how and when to use them. The cards that I find are most often ignored by new players are trashers like Chapel. The first time you see someone trash their whole hand of coppers and estates, you sort of gasp and think, "Gosh, why would they do that? Those copper are worth 1 treasure and the estates are 1 victory point! Why would you want to lose them?" But then you see how efficient their deck becomes just by getting rid of the less powerful cards to get to the powerful ones more quickly.

Harem can be fun. xD I love turning up other people's Harems with a Tribute or drawing them into my hand with a Scout (it's about the only thing Scout's good for, haha). I also like making lots of innuendos with my friends in games with Harem. xD

CAN I JUST SAY THAT I LOVE MAGIC THE GATHERING

>> How long have you been playing for?
For about a little over six months now.
>> What types of decks do you like?
Oh gosh. I'd have to say I like the Angel, Elf, Demon, and Zombie decks. I have this one kick-ass Demon deck that people are calling my "Burn Deck".
>> What are some of your favorite cards?
I don't have a favorite card, to be honest. I haven't been playing long/frequent enough to determine my favorites, sadly.
>> Other favorites? (sets, card type, creature class, favorite Planeswalker, etc)
I love playing Blue and White, Black and Red, and Green and White decks. I don't know, it feels fun naturally and the cards in those colors are phenominal.
>> Have you been to/won any tournaments?
I haven't joined any tournaments yet, but my one friend has been said to be undefeatable because of his deck he usually uses, but with my deck, I've beat him about four times by now. I feel proud of myself for that.

@ Vox - Yeah, I have not been to any of the state held ones to win for money, but my husband and I would love to try it sometime. We think we would do really well in it. It would be fun to try.

Found the schedules and locations of the different tournaments: Tournaments and Events Schedule : Tournaments & Events : Trading Card Game : Magic: The Gathering

@ Shadami - Yeah, but it also depends on what cards you get in your starting hand, the luck of the draw, getting mana screwed or flooded, etc. It is strategy and luck mixed together.

@ Shiverpass - Does the Burn Deck have lots of Red burn spells that do damage to a creature or player? Cause that is usually what makes up a "burn deck".
There are so many wonderful deck ideas! I am currently using an adapted version of Esper Spirits deck. (mine is better than the pro deck, lol)
That is something to be proud of. Maybe you can go with your friend to the tournament next time he goes and play in it. It is a fun experience.

let's see... whenever I play a new game i ask "what's the objective?" "how do you win"
for this game they told me victory points! So i read all the cards that were put out and went. OH ! got it. bought a bunch of harems which were super useful. and just kinda.. owned it...
than my next game we had this one card... something about everyone 10 cards in the deck or something you get a victory point.. i forget what it was...
So i.. kinda.. heheh.. umm welll.. would use up all my coins buying useful cards. and if i had extra buys i would buy a copper. It was one of my most fun games i played as i watched everyones confused faces through the game as i just shrugged off their looks and than at the end the shock as i out pointed them by.. idk.. 20 points or more...

My friends and i play nice. We ... word i'm drawing a blank one... redraw, but we don't penalize if you have to. and with my goblin deck.. heheh... ^^;; it really can't play badly unless someone knocks me out super fast. as ong as i have 2 land in my hand first turn. though sometimes i get lucky with one. I have a bunch of one land goblins as fodder to toss out. and get an army fast. its fun.

It is also fun playing Three-Headed-Giant (where it is 3v3).

Wait.. is it a battle type of MTG? cause i know three headed giant. as well as like 3 free for all. and some weird one that i think was just a for fun with friends made up rule thing by a lying ex boyfriend of mine, that whoever your partner was could use your leftover mana pool.

Yeah, it is another style of play. ^_^
Yeah, that last one was made up because in three-headed or two-headed giant, you cannot use each other's mana pools. All you can do is share strategy and show your partner your hands.

Oh i know. it does make some interesting game play though. If the teams play at the same time. So than you're attacking as one as well. So you can have a completely made of wall deck for defense. ect. kinda fun.

Commander is the 100 card deck with a commander card that acts as a base for strategy and mana colors.
I have a Xiran (sp) insect deck, the whole point is to get a ton of bugs and overrun the opponent.

o.o I keep hearing about this card game. I've played it once and think it's fun (and far less demonic and evil than my parents claimed)

Also new person I just met online plays it too... I may be getting exposed to this a bit more soon it seems
