There's a lot of really great indie games out there just ripe for downloading. I wanted everyone to have a chance to talk about their favourites and make suggestions of game they really think other people should play.

I'll also keep a running list of download links to games so that everyone can have a chance to play the games!

OFF - I don't know what to call the genre of this game. But it's got a really great (although weird) story. (Has combat)
Yume Nikki - an exploration game that is a little creepy if you've never seen anything about it before. (no combat)
Mad Father - A horror based game. (no combat, lots of environment interaction though)
Ib - Another horror game (no combat)

Really 2 indie games come to mind. Terraria, which is heavily adventure based, and Minecraft (if it counts), which is heavily creation based.

I've always been a major fan of sandbox games

I'll always be a huge fan of minecraft.
I've been playing since the alpha version(jeez that was forever ago I saved a fortune on the game).
I never really got into terraria, it just seemed like a minecraft ripoff though I have a lot of friends that play it.

It's actually not a minecraft ripoff. While the game is similar, the gameplay is heavily focused on adventure because it is stuck at 2D. Minecraft has a 3D element and has a very large world, but sort of prevents adventure a little bit.

Terraria is actually a set size map more like the minecraft Alpha/trial.

They are pretty different gameplay wise. Minecraft feels more sandbox-y to me which is why I like it best.
u_u I don't have to worry about monsters if I have enough torches!

I've been getting a lot of great games from the Humble Indie Bundles.

Sword & Sworcery is probably my favorite game from them so far. Its a fantasy/rpg type game, with lovely, distinct pixel art, simple but fun gameplay, a great soundtrack, and a touching, melancholy storyline. (It is available on computers and mobile devices for damn cheap too.)

Bastion is another great one I played recently. I guess it is a fantasy rpg/platformer type game. It also have wonderful graphics and soundtrack, as well as versatile gameplay and a part-melancholy, part-hopeful storyline.

Another indie game I like from way back is Machinarium. Its a point and click adventure game with cute robots in a robot city. Its super cute, and also has a great soundtrack. You can play a demo on their site.

Now that I think about it, in general the games like best (indie or otherwise) have fabulous soundtracks. There are a few exceptions, like Minecraft and The Sims, but I turn off their music and play my own with those.

OFF Mac download
That actually took a minute.

@Chexala
I love bastion, it's such a stunning game, though I am so bad at it. I'm excited for transistor though.
And gosh the music for those games. I could just listen to them forever.
Ahh goodness I just played the demon for machinarium and now I have to come with 10$ thanks a lot(I'm kidding)
It's really good though, I love puzzle games.

Glancing over those quickly, it looks like some of them are free? Am I seeing correctly? I'm always looking for neat games to play, but I can't afford to buy all the cool games on Steam.

I play a lot of indie flash games on Kongregate and Newgrounds. They can get a little samey when they get stuck in specific genres (tower defense, for example), but every now and then one will come out that's totally revolutionary or tells a great story. They're all pretty short since they're browser-based, not downloaded, but still very cool!

Well I know terraria isn't free, but it used to go on sale on steam a lot.

Ib~! i loved Ib. q u q granted, all i've ever done was
watch my friend play it, but it's so nice. = u = <333 i love
the style of it, and everything else. q A q

o 3 o i haven't played a lot of indie games outside of the
slenderman games… but that could just be that gaming
just isn't my thing…

but i really do support indie game companies. i accidentally
had a major freak out on some people because they were
distributing the new slender game from friend to friend,
rather than paying for the newer, better version. q _ q

it made me sad… because the people need to be paid. gah.
i try not to take indie things for free if i have to pay for it… i
want to support them. o u oU

but yay indie games~ o 3 o just my two cents.

Would Katawa Shoujo count as an indie game? I would presume so.

That being said, where's the love for Recettear? I mean, a game which is basically kind of like that one chapter of Dragon Quest IV where you run a shop for a bit, but drawn out? OMG YES

I believe that qualifies more as a Visual Novel if I say so myself. Given how much reading there is and all as compared to choice making.

Katawa shoujo and hatoful boyfriend being dating sims do fall more as a visual novel than anything else. But katawa shoujo is a great dating sim. I still haven't gotten everyone's endings .

I got all the endings long ago... I remember many many years ago playing the demo all the time even though it was just a demo and playing out all the routes waiting for it's release

Which routes in KS did you get?

So true... that was a hard one to figure out how to act around though question-wise.

Rin... to this day I still don't make much sense of her XD
Yet at the same time it all makes sense...
