Favorite old PC adventure game?
Anyone remember those older PC adventure games? Either the ones where you type everything out or the traditional point and click games? I remember ones like the King's Quest series, Sam & Max, and Maniac Mansion.
So do you have a favorite old PC adventure game? Or any old PC game for that matter? |
I'm so with you on Kings Quest and Sam 'n' Max. Add Monkey Island, and all is well with the world.
But I must say Monkey Island was my runaway favorite. I remember I used to spend HOURS trying to play and figure the games out. I never could manage to beat 2, though. |
I know the feeling. I have the Monkeys Island game for PS1 and I love it. It is sooo funny but some parts of it are kind of hard. I am still trying to figure how to get out of this one place. I mean I guess I could look online for a cheat or something but I rather try it on my own. hehe :D Maybe I could ask you, huh Cardi?
I just love all of those older games. They dont make any games like that any more, right? All of the ones not are all about fighting, and stuff.... Oh well. I guess I will keep trying to see what I can do about this game. hehe ;) |
I used to play tons of games on the PC when I had a comm64 (Well I still have one, but no games any more... DOH!). I can't remember most of their names though, considering how long ago that was. I remember hassle castle... wet paint.. Oh! and the classic Oregon trail! w00t... Haha ^.^;
|
Yep, I used to love that game, Oregon trail. It was fun. I wish I still had a copy of it somewhere. :D
|
Yep, loved Monkey Island and Oregon Trail too!
Give me a call sometime Beck and I'll see what part you're stuck on. Yeah, I tend to cheat a lot with walkthroughs...I'm bad. |
Okay, I will call you and you can help me through it. hehe. I think that is why I have not played anymore of the game. I am stuck right now. lol
|
There was a really old game that I used to play on the old macintosh computers... it was kind of a RPG, and it was fantasy, and you'd go around and fight monsters and collect things and try to beat the game.
I wish I had made a copy of it on a floppy or something so I could save it and play it somehow, but I didn't, and we scrapped that computer years and years ago. ;__; |
King's Quest was amazing. At some point or another, I've beaten all of those games. They used to keep me entertained for hours. I think that I still have a version or two on my laptop now.
Space Quest was also a good series. It was along the same lines, except in the far distant future. And the main hero was a janitor. Go figure. And I think that every kid has wasted hours of their life playing the Oregon Trail. I for one must have died a dozen times over from dysentery. And you have to admit - You stayed there for hours too, waiting to shoot the buffalo, even if you didn't need the meat. |
Knerd - Yeah, I know I wasted a lot of time playing Oregon Trail. It was a lot of fun back then. We did not have all the games we do now, so that was fun! I loved shooting those buffalos. hehe ;)
|
Buffalo shooting...haha XD I hated when they stopped showing up though...when the food became more scarce. Then you had no choice but to shoot the dang bunnies and squirrels. Yeah, most of the time my party died from disease. I was usually the doctor though, so that helped a bit.
So has anyone played the new Sam n Max series yet? I know there's a new one out there with 6 parts to the series. I played the demos of them and thought it seemed pretty fun. I might buy them. |
Oregon trail was THE game back in the day... They don't even have it in schools anymore though! My son doesn't even know what it is T.T I need to get a copy... I bet it's freeware by now...
|
They seriously need to bring it back again. I think I still have the CD somewhere, but I'm not sure if it'll run on my computer now. That's one thing I hate about the older PC games...they usually don't run on the newer computers and Windows.

Actually there is a delux version of the game. I found it while I was searching for a place to DL the original. It looks interesting. I did come across a website that lets you play the game (the original) right on the site (via your browser)... That was pretty cool.
|
Ooo, really? Do you have the link? If not, then maybe I'll google it.
|
I liked one though I'm not sure if it's that old. It was a click and go called The Dig That was really an awesome game ^^ There was another one called the day of the tencacle that was great too ! |
omg, I loved Day of the Tentacle! I played that one a lot myself. :)
|
King's Quest was prime. When I first played that years ago, it all seemed so difficult, now going through it, it's such a small game, and seems a lot easier.
My favorite ones were Phantasmagoria, Grim Fandago, Discworld, Loom, and Monkey's Island. By far Monkey's Island was prime, so funny, great story.. and I'm partial to pixelated characters. Good times, it's to bad that they don't make games like that anymore. |
Wow, some of the games that you said I have no clue what they are. I know monkeys Island. I play it on my PS2. They made a game for PS2 a couple years ago. :) A lot of fun and a lot like the ones you play on the PC.

As for games I HAVE played, my all time favorite is the Quest for Glory series. It's really too bad that nowadays I can't play QFG4, one of my favorites, because of that stupid time scripting bug, Error 52. Stupid fast computer mumble grumble. As many in the thread have mentioned, the King's Quest games were also good, as well as the Monkey Island games, which I played for the first time recently. I also much enjoyed the Laura Bow games... but unfortunately, the second game, though well made in other aspects, was absurdly difficult - if you didn't get every bit of information that was possible you got the 'bad' ending. Very frustrating, as even a good player would not be able to obtain ALL the information possible in that detective style game. Heck, I've lost using a walkthrough before! The worst point and click adventure game I've ever played was Xanth, based on the series by Piers Anthony. It had huge false choices, which pissed me off(you were given a choice of guides in the beginning.. but only one didn't lead to certain, unavoidable death). Its puzzles were way beyond the norm as far as inane and absurd solutions go, as well. It was still kinda fun to play, but it was so annoying I just gave up on solving the stupid puzzles on my own and just used a walkthrough. Man, a lot of people sure like Oregon Trail! I also liked it a lot, but my elder sister was a bigger fan. I already posted this in a similar topic, but she used to name her party members after members of our family, then call out if we died, and tell us how. It was pretty funny to hear that you died of dysentary while you were minding your own business, watching TV! I really did like those point and click adventure games. As I said, I only tried Monkey Island recently. I should really play more! |
