Why Do You Play Games?

I'm in a Intro to Game Development class and I need to do some research on why people play games to help me better understand the player market. I figured what better way to do this then by making a thread on some of my favorite online games. I want you're answers to be truthful.

So why do you play games?

I play games for different reasons.
1. To relax and escape stresses of RL
2. It's a better source of entertainment then TV
3. To connect with friends that live in other states
4. Source of communication. I find it easier to talk to someone online then in person.
5. To reward myself when I have gotten all my work done

  • Hrmmm, so far I've joined almost every game and avi site just because friends, in state, were playing them as well and wanted me to join.

Now, even with most of them quitting I continue though, probably just to relax.

Guess also 4 and 5 though sometimes. Don't have a cell phone so typing is always the easiest way, and let myself be on an hour or whatever after I finish however so much work.

Hmm.

I can't leave the house because my parents are overly protective. I love going online and playing games because I'm not strong in real life and I love owning a lot and being helpful and powerful online. I love conversations and online, I can speak more without being interrupted.

I like watching tv more than going online, but there isn't a show that interests me enough right now. I love going online to connect with friends who I've met online, true, but also because I feel closer to them than my friends offline since I spend more time with my friends online than offline. I can't be with my friends offline afterschool, thus limiting a lot.

I'm a procrastinator so technically I reward myself before I got all my work done.

just wondering: I got confused. games in general or online games? I play ps2 games to spend time with my lil sis and also because I enjoy stories and cutscenes and leveling up- a sense of accomplishment.

Hopefully I can help you out ^ ^
I guess my answer would be 1. and 3. 4.

I don't play so many online games, but I play console games almost religiously. When I was very, very young a neighbor bought a SNES and decided he didn't want an NES anymore, so he gave it and all its games to me and my dad. My brother was too young to play, really, so my dad would play with me. We played Contra and 1942, and when he was at school/work I would play all the Marios. It was like, the only Father-Daughter bonding time we ever had. It made gaming a really special, important part of my life. o.o; But, I dunno if that's a normal reason. I also think they're fun?

Nathuram 08-16-2007 03:39 AM

Ooo, what's the introduction to game development class like? I plan on majoring in new media, and taking a game design theory class. Perhaps they're similar?

Well, there are plenty of games. But I think the main reason why people play most games.. is because they want to be something/someone they're not. But different games are played for different reasons; i.e. Roleplaying games are played for their stoyline, and fighting games are played for their competition.

My reasons for playing games:
1) Personal time
2) The game's storyline
3) Entertainment value of the gameplay
4) Competition
5) A source of inspiration
6) Communication

All other things tie into the above reasons.

@elanifave: Bonding time is an excellent reason :] That's what multiplayer modes are for, after all.

Runihura 08-16-2007 11:53 AM

Well, to escape into a fantasy life is first-off.
It's also my way to spend quality time with my sister XD
For the creative stories while being able to experience them first-hand
And for the fun of screaming on every corner XD 9imagine the games I play ><;)

Eroy 08-16-2007 06:17 PM

I play games because I love them. I've been playing video games with my brother since we were little kids and its been something I've always been good at.

I like to play console games when I can but I'm a bigger fan of online games because you can connect with other people around the world. For example I play FFXI online and I get to party with people in Japan and other countries. It's pretty cool :)

As far as avatar sites... I mostly join those b/c my RL friend brings me to them. After I find my nich I usually fall in love with them and the people I meet and can't leave xP

khomi 08-17-2007 02:46 AM

Hmm, well basically:

- I grew up playing them. They just stuck to me.
- To pass the time (road trips and airplane flights!)
- Because they're fun, and have a unique sort of entertainment value
- Because sometimes the art is just gorgeous. : >

for the most part it is to get away from anything I can. I lose myself in games fast, and when I do that I finish games fast, and end up getting bored because it's to easy. online games on the other hand have an upper hand to me seen as though they never really 'end' since it's an online game, it can't have an 'end'.

I play online games because they last longer than offline games.

Nessie 08-29-2007 08:54 AM

I play games to relieve stress/anxiety, and to have fun with my friends online. We play various games together, and I have friends all over because of them. :3 I play console games (omg love my ds) as well as online/mmo games. But i also find them fun and challenging!

wish i had more to say @[email protected] cant think of anything specific ^^; but feel free to contact me if you wish to know more :3

Icebreaker 08-31-2007 01:45 AM

i play games to get away form everything else
and just relax
though sometimes games dont let me relax depending on their difficulty >.<
but some can be really fun and help me forget a stressful day or something

but sometimes i play it a something to do during my leisure time ^_^
some of the games ive played are too addicting and so once i start playing i keep playing until i cant no more
..and then i continue the next day XD

Feralin 09-18-2007 03:58 PM

It's fun and a good way to pass the time.

Lysander 09-19-2007 02:58 AM

I play games for fun usually. I adore game music, so it makes the experience so much better. I'm also going into video games for college, so playing them helps, I think.

Rinali Lee 09-19-2007 09:28 PM

My reasons are pretty similar, actually. o.o

I play games to...

-Escape from the real world and relax before I have to work my butt off again.
-Interact with online friends or friends who live really far away.
-For interesting/good graphics, music, gameplay, etc.
-Just for fun. xD

Teeth 09-26-2007 09:46 PM

Good question.
Many reasons:
1. I play my old games to remind me of the good old days of being a kid playing non-stop video games.
2. I learn things?
3. Relaxing
4. Skill improvement for when I go to the arcade! ^^ (Nerd..)
5. Entetainment other then TV and Comp.

Rurrik 09-27-2007 03:07 AM

I have no life....college doesn't count everyone knows that.

shellthabunny 10-01-2007 08:22 PM

I play games because I am addicted to them  I find them much more entertaining then if I were to turn the T.V on or something :D

Morien 10-02-2007 02:41 AM

I play for pretty much two different reasons. But then again, I only actually play two different games.

I play Sakura Taisen for the story. I love the characters, and I like the whole strategy aspect of it. I really just want to find out more about these darling girls, so whenever I have a few hours, I like to sit down and play it. :3 It's also pretty helpful with learning some kanji because I'll sit down with a translation and a dictionary to figure out what they're saying.

I play World of Warcraft for the people. Three of my bestest friends in the world play WoW, so I get on to goof off and talk to them. And sometimes I get on because I just like to get into a different world than paying bills and reading books about how libraries work and such... T_T

And once in a while I'll play something different-- that one little Naruto game was fun-- because I want to kick somebody's ass but can't do it in the real world. <3

Mirena 10-02-2007 04:47 PM

My reasons for playing games? Hmm..

Sometimes I play games just to relax.
Other times I play games when I need something different to think about.
And I play games to have fun, with friends or my sister.

Blitz [GKS] 10-08-2007 06:58 PM

I play for pretty much the same reasons. They are fun, and they are very creative. I love being able to interact in worlds that are seamlessly impossible. I play games when I am bored/stressed or just in my free time.

Games have unlimited potential, I bet one day you wouldn't even be able to tell reality from them 8)

LordZan 10-08-2007 08:08 PM

1. Fun
2. Aid is relaxation and stress relief/prevention.
3. Help me think of what my next move in life will be.
4. allows me to Slay enemies Cruely to unleash darker feelings.
5. I enjoy the act of 'Leveling up' and Item collection, as well as seeing What items enemies have.
Thats it for me.

pwny_of_doom 10-08-2007 09:25 PM

I agree that escapism plays a large role in the reason we play games as a whole. We can have effect on a pretend reality that is much simpler and less risky than our atomic reality where life if fragile and complex.

Sakura 10-10-2007 09:27 PM

Ohmy, my boyfriend's written a whole essay on this. His English teacher was impressed, too!

I think I'm for similar reasons.

1. "Just one more level". You think you'll stay on till you beat this boss, or figure out this puzzle, but it always stretches into just one more.

2. Immersing yourself in a whole new world is a lot of fun. "Becoming" another character is very liberating~!

3. I get my aggression out. See! Video games are beneficial this way, they help relieve anger, not intensify it!

4. I feel so proud when I complete a game, or unlock something fabby. A sense of acheivemnt is always good for self-esteem~!

5. Bragging rights, baby! I don't often indulge, but when I beat my boyfriend seventeen times in a row, I gotta gloat a little, right? :3

Well, there's absolutely tons more i could say, but I'm surely boring now XD

naruu 10-12-2007 02:10 AM

I guess, for me, video games are just a good pastime. It's also a way to get away from reality, playing as another character or person is a good way to do so.

nike13 10-12-2007 04:09 AM

I play to destress. Its much safer for me to get my frustration out by magically destroying a legion of monsters or 'dancing' out a song than for me to enact what my brain really wants to do (safer as in there's no law suits involved). Plus, some games have really nice stories to them that I want to play out so I can see what happens.
