I absolutely loved Chrono Cross, and what little bit of Trigger I've gotten to play I've loved as well. I seriously hope Square puts their games up on Virtual Console so I can play the whole thing.

I played an beat Chrono Cross a while back and really enjoyed the game. There were plenty of differing playable characters, very deep plot development, and an awesome battle system. I heard from a friend today that Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross's predecessor, was a much more fun game. I've heard from other people that the battle system in Chrono Trigger was boring, like that of the early Final Fantasy series.
Does anyone who has played both games have an opinion as to which game is more enjoyable with respect to plot, characters, and battle system? I know that Chrono Trigger is a rare and expensive game, but I would like to play it. I doubt I will buy it; I will probably have to rent or borrow it from a friend, but I'd like to know if it's really worth playing after one has played Chrono Cross, a very entertaining RPG.

Finding a physical copy of Chrono Trigger for SNES would be really hard, copies of the game are collectors items now. A special edition was released for Playstation that included brand new cutscenes, you can find that on ebay pretty easily. Or you could download a rom and emulator, but it's only legal to keep them for a 24 hour test period. ^^;
I find Chrono Trigger far more enjoyable than Chrono Cross. I didn't think the battle system was boring at all... it's just not 3D. It can become really fun later on in the game when you learn techniques, can link those techniques with other characters, etc. I enjoyed the story and characters a whole lot, much more than the story and characters from Chrono Cross, but that could just be because I played CT years before I played CC. It has 13 different endings, which is pretty amazing for a Super Nintendo game, and it broke new ground for video games in a lot of other ways too. I think you should check it out, even if for nothing more than the historical value.

I have both and their fun to play, Chrono Trigger is a great game on its self but I gatta say Chrono Cross is a little better, Its explains more about Lavos and the time rifts from CT. So my vote goes for Chrono Cross b/c of the extended story and options for characters.

Wow. You're really a fan of Chrono Cross to get even a tattoo like that.
I'll agree with you its a great game. It's story plot keeps you going. The characters are unique and many. The fighting was different and fun to play with. Plus the accent thing with the characters was cool. XD
I played chrono trigger before and it was fun. But I lost my saves too many times to go through the story again from the begining and play it all over again.
The great thing about the game "Chrono Cross" would also be b/c you could continue after you beat the games. (I love games like that!! ^^)
Otherwise, whats your favorite character and which one did you not like.
I liked almost all. My favorite was Kid and......I think...I can't seem to remember his name.
It started with a "K" and he was a dragon warrior or something with silver hair. He was cool. There were other characters I liked to. I'll have to take a look back at the list of characters. I think theres like around 65 characters or something?

I just recalled that Kid also had a unique story by the way! I think it was something like she was part of the group and someone....died...her friend I think.
But she's a 'cool' character.
Another thing thats awesome about the game would be the graphics. It was the one thing that attracted me a lot. Like you know when you put the game in and before you even click the start button you always get that intro movie. I think it was the intro where they play the begining song (which is an amazing instrumental I never got bored of) and you see all the great Playstation graphics flashing through and matching the song as well.
They did a wonderful job on that.
The artwork also is really really nice (same or graphics. I mean for the playstation that was good).
Of course, out of all the chracters Serge is the coolest. ^_^ I mean with a story-line. It was really interesting how his story was in both worlds.
Also when I first played the game i was soooo confused in the begining. At one point everyone knows you and then after the screen play no one doesn't so it was like 'wow whats going on?' lol

Since there are two topics about Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger, I'm going to go ahead and merge them. Some of the post dates overlap a bit, so the topic might look a bit wonky.

Chrono Trigger is having a DS port, with better graphics, (but still going with the same SNES look, just improved colors and art) an extra dungeon and wireless play. No reports of a multiplayer option yet.

Chrono Cross is a really amazing game. It has a wonderfully engaging story with many characters to choose from. The battle system is pretty rad and it's just awesome. I'll admit that I know next to nothing about Chrono Trigger except that you traveled between time rather than dimensions. I find it hard to start the game over though, since I must have played the beginning a fair ten times before I got a Playstation One memory card.

Wow. They're remaking a lot of the older games on the DS. Since i don't have one i won't be able to get it but it might be fun. Will the story be the exact same basically?

I assume it will be-- S-E would have to deal with a very large amount of angry fans if they changed anything significant about the story. Ports rarely (if ever) alter story elements.
I've played both numerous times, but feel that CT is far better. Its plot is very cohesive, the characters and their relationships are strong, and the development of the story is well-paced and interesting. Chrono Cross has a messy plot and far too many characters, and I feel that Trigger does a better job of treating tragedy and comedy. Cross seems to belabor the point at times.
On the other hand, Cross is surpassingly beautiful, and I did enjoy it. I prefer Cross' character designer to Trigger's, too (but that's mostly because I'm an Escaflowne fan, lol). I'm glad it has so many fans.
You guys should really try CT, though! It's a light-hearted and fun game, and like Cross it's a story of hope. The "good" ending leaves one feeling very satisfied.

Where are you stuck, Naomi?
And you're so right about the trailer. Being a CT fan since childhood, when the demo with the opening trailer for CC first came out I was moved almost to tears, and showed it to everyone I knew, even if they had never heard of either game before. XD

I have yet to play Chrono Cross yet but I definately love me some Chrono Trigger! The whole epic story makes me want to play it over and over again! Or mabye it's the New Game+, which I really like about games sometimes. I absolutely adore Marle (no surprise I suppose) and I really like Frog/Glenn as well.
Do they still sell Chrono Cross in stores though? Cause I would really like to play it! :)

I've only played CT a little bit but I've beaten CC a couple of time and I love it so much. CC pretty much is the game that got me into RPGs. Probably one of my most favorite games. I love the character designs and storyline.

Oi, who WOULDN'T be a fan of CC, CT, eh?
CC was the first thing I ever even worked to buy... I was about, eh, eight or nine when I bought it?
I also have the walkthrough, even though by now I don't need it. xD I bought CT with FFIV, I think? I still have a few endings to go on that, but do to my love of the storyline... I keep just finishing the story instead of going for the alternate endings. xD I've gotten all of them on CC though. ;3

I loved Chrono Trigger and it's still one of my favorite games. I couldn't get into Chrono Cross at all, though. I just found the characters flat and boring.
And... I'm thrilled to find out they're making a Chrono Trigger DS remake!

Haha, Kid, you make a good point. I don't think I've ever gotten all the endings in CT, either. The "normal" one is awesome on its own, so I keep telling myself, "There's always the next new game plus." Then I never actually go after the other endings...
I actually never got all the endings for CC, either, though, because that game is just so long and I don't like it as much as CT.

I don't even remember which ending I got in CT. I think it was either Magus' or Frog's. I never beat CC so never got an ending.
