How Nintendo Ruined Mario

Top Five Ways Nintendo Ruined Mario - Gallery and Images

Quote:

#1 They gave him a voice
At first, we delighted in Mario's stereotypical Italian accent and his "AHA"s and "WOOHOO"s. But since Super Mario 64, Charles Martinet's voice has progressively grown more annoying and getting higher in pitch. Just listening to him exclaim "Super Mariooooooo Galaxyyyyyyy" at the Wii Menu (before clicking the game icon) gives us chills, not to mention it makes us feel slightly embarrassed for even playing the video game. It was much better when Mario's voice was left to the imagination, much like all video game characters. We're not saying cut his vocal chords. Just take it down several notches.

#2 Mario Shafts Luigi
Aside from a starring role in Luigi's Mansion, Luigi always takes a backseat to his brother, who hogs the spotlight like a Mountain Dew-ed teenager with a new video camera. For once, we'd like to see Mario break his leg right before fighting Bowser, and suddenly Luigi appears, carries his bro to safety and saves the Mushroom Kingdom. Instead of giving the green guy his due, Nintendo takes risks with games like Professor Layton and the Curious Village, which no sexually active American has ever heard of.

#3 He dresses up as a bee
Mario as a raccoon? Love it. Mario as a frog? Super cute. Mario as a fat yellow honeybee showing off his ass? Creepy. Sorry, but Bee Mario is the type of character only a three-year-old can love, but only because their brain hasn't developed enough to know his costume sucks.

#4 He can't hang onto his woman
No matter how many times Mario rescues Princess Peach, he can't prevent Bowser from doing it again. For years, we thought she was the stupid one for not hiring more security, but now we feel she has a thing for Bowser and lets herself get caught. Either that, or she gets off on having her bumbling knight in shining armor come to her rescue. Regardless, Nintendo transformed Mario into a whipped chump.

#5 Nintendo's overused "all-in-one" game token
We hope you love basketball, because so does Mario. In fact, he also enjoys baseball, tennis, kart racing, Mario Parties and golf, and we're 99 percent sure that Nintendo will add hockey and football to his bloated all-star sports resume someday. Look, we know he's the company's most recognizable mascot (Pikachu probably has something to say about that), but we could use a break from seeing his mustachioed, goofball mug on the cover of video games.
I agree with the article, that there are definitely franchises of the beloved Mario games that I wouldn't play because they are JUST TOO MUCH.

I love the old Mario Bros games, and I really like characters like Luigi and Yoshi, but I have to say that Mario himself has gotten annoying.

What's with all the sport games? Mario Kart is fun, but now he's doing Olympics and Baseball, and pretty soon, everything else!

So, any fans of the original Mario games, or just the earlier ones, before they overused Mario's franchise?

And how much do you agree with the article?

MidnightRun 02-24-2008 01:08 AM

I actually don't understand this 'too much' stuff alot of people obsess about. XD It was Nintendo's choice to do these things, and I just roll with it. :/
I personally like Super Mario Galaxy, and I see nothing wrong with him being a bee. o.o But I like him as a Boo better. XDD

LemonWarlord 02-24-2008 01:23 AM

The bee and voice is kidna... nitpicking.
As for the Mario and Luigi, we all know Mario is the more successful brother :o

But... for 4 and 5, I do have to agree.
90% of the time, all the TRUE Mario games have the same plotline. Princess Peach gets captured, you run through and complete it. Then the commercialization of Mario is just... disgusting.

Also, Nintendo is practically LIVING off Mario, Metroid, Legend of Zelda and other big names to even DENT the market share. So they do all Mario, which is way over commercialization.

I thought Nintendo ruined Mario by pronouncing his name wrong on that new Mario vs. Sonic Olympics game. xD. I don't think the voice is so wrong. Either way, wasn't there a Mario and Luigi show. (not sure if they talked.)

Sinspiration 02-24-2008 01:40 AM

I agree with the whole thing. Lets put it this way; if i play Super Smash brothers. Any Mario I see is having it in every possible way I can manage.

That annoys me every time I see that commercial! Arg. You'd think they'd hire a narrator who can pronounce "Mario" correctly.

Now for the topic at hand:

-the voice: Um, what? People complain that Nintendo doesn't use voice acting for their games, and now we're supposed to be mad they are using voice acting? Make up your minds. I personally enjoy the sound of Mario's voice.

-Luigi: This I partially agree with. However, Galaxy was at least a step up from 64 for Luigi.

-bee suit: The bee suit is awesome. Anyone who has to insult another person because they enjoy seeing Mario in a bee suit seriously needs to recheck their maturity level. And seriously, there's no difference between the bee suit and the tanooki or frog suits. The only reason the author doesn't like the bee suit is because it's new, and apparently, anything new is automatically inferior to the "classics."

-Peach: OK, that's a viable complaint, but the core Mario games are platformers, not RPG's where story is a vital part of the game. But it still makes great joke fodder for the Mario RPG games.

-other Mario games: If people didn't buy them, they wouldn't make more. And to be quite honest, Nintendo isn't the only company that does it. And I'm not even talking about just video game companies. How many freaking Land Before Time movies are there? But again, just because they're out there doesn't mean you have to buy them.

All in all, I found most of these just an excuse to complain.

@Degnne -An excuse to complain? Probably. I just found the article pretty amusing and accurate at parts, so I thought to share. ^-^

I agree with you on the bee suit on how most people don't like something just because it's 'new' and thus, not the beloved 'classic'. Maybe I should post the bee costume pic up. It's not that bad, but not as good as Mario in his raccoon suit ^o^.

@Takuto - yea they did have a cartoon. Here's a wiki exerpt :

Quote:

Mario was featured in a show entitled The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, live-action movie called Super Mario Bros., the Nintendo Comics System (a series of comics featuring Nintendo characters), and the Nintendo Adventure Books. The show starred "Captain" Lou Albano as Mario, and the movie starred Bob Hoskins. Outside the original games, television shows, film and comics, he has spawned a line of licensed merchandise and made appearances in popular culture.

I don“t have enough mario games to properly agree with you, but I certainly do see your point.

I liked mario as a character up to the nintendo 64. Not a single mario game exactly sucked on that console. But then the gamecube came to existance. Games like SSBM, Mario Sunshine and Mario Paper were ok. But thanks to the other games, Mario turned into a rediculous concept. The ever so cheerfull mario party became one of the most anoying games ever. Mario kart lost it's glow aswell. But the most awful game that just KILLED it for me, is mario soccer. I hate somwhate everything about it.

The mario world lost that magical feeling. It's less about mushrooms, battles, pipes, magical stars and hidden worlds.. Its about minigames and sports. Voice acting that makes you emberassed to play, and rediculous characters that came out of nowhere. Like waluigi or daisy.. -_-

1. I've only heard Mario speak once for Super Mario Galaxy, and that was in the aforementioned title screen. So it's not like Mario's voice degrades the entire game. o_O The characters occaisionally say one word to go along with the on-screen text, but the game isn't narrated.

2. I find it laughable that in the same article, they complain about the overuse of Mario and complain about taking risks in new games and game types.
Surely a Luigi game is just another franchise game?
Bah, what? This guy just likes to complain.
Also, is Luigi even any better than Mario? >_> I mean, it's not like the characters particularly have an in-depth personality.

3. The only weird thing about the bee costume is crawling over the queen bee. >_> Other than that, I really don't see the difference between it and the other costumes. (Tanuki, tanuki! ><) He's yellow with wings and he flies around. Adds an extra element to the gameplay. :D It's a bit of a poor justification for saying they ruined Mario.

4. Eh, it's a classic formula. I've never seen anyone pick up on RE4 for using it.
Add to that that the core of Mario platformers is gameplay - no-one moans about the lack of story in Tetris - and it's mostly redundant.

5. I agree, the sports games are overdone. But I'd rather play Mario Kart with... well, Toad, actually. Mario isn't the be-all and end-all of the sports games, since you can pick pretty much all of the other characters.
Fortunately, with freedom of purchase, you can largely ignore whatever spin-off Nintendo has made, and concentrate on the core games. :D

If it sells why stop? Its a sell-out world nowadays so we'll just have to get used to it. :|

Tre Le Coco 03-12-2008 06:54 AM

i like him as a bee T_T

i agree about the peach thing tho xD; it IS repetitive, but at least its lots of fun to get to her =3

either way i'll always love mario ^^

I agree somewhat, but it's not the worst thing in the world.

I love that Nintendo took a risk with Layton. Goes to show, people can complain about stale games and risk-taking at the same time.

And the "sexually active" bit is ironic, given that the context is a bunch of gamers complaining about a fictional video game brother of a turtle-stomping plumber!

Again, somewhat ironic, considering the other choices Mario has. Running around with a cape isn't childish? How about wearing a furry Tanooki suit? :D

I kinda agree with this one. It'll be nice if this cliche wasn't brought back again and again. To be air, though, Peach has been much more proactive lately, with her own game, and being able to hold her own in games like Smash Bros.

Honestly, I never really think much about the other games, and I suspect this is the case for other gamers, too. If they start making -only- Mario games, and bombarding us with ads every day, and everywhere, then yes, there's a case for overexposure there, but I don't see anything wrong in putting Mario in various games. They aren't overdoing it.

Eddafred 03-13-2008 10:34 PM

xD

I agree with some points, like Luigi always getting the short end of the stick.
Though I don't know if short captions neccesarily count as speach.
I'd be more worried if he actually talked during every scene throughout the game.

And of course Bowser has to steal Peach yet again.
Every mario game features the same core plot, it's become a bit of a tradition.

But all in all, I think they'd have to do a lot worse to do some serious damage to the franchise.

1982-Lolita 03-14-2008 11:48 PM

I found it rather amusing.
