any other Suikoden fans out there?

just wondering. I completely adore this series, especially the first two and the fifth in the series.

I thought Suikoden III had some problems (it lacked some of the feel of the first two, the main rune had the ability to KO your entire party if you weren't careful, and the last chapter of it was meh since the person in charge of the story left the team before the last chapter was made) and IV wasn't too hot (altho it got some of the old Suikoden feel back... and had Ted from the first game). V blew me away, tho, they got the PERFECT replacement for the original writer for that and any gameplay flaws were pretty negligible. the scope of it is freakin' epic, too. honestly, it restored my hope in console RPGs, most of which put too much focus on graphics and not enough on plot.

I played Suikoden VI and that was it.
It was a pretty enjoyable game. I haven't checked out any of the other ones though.

I'm not a fan, but I've always seen the game and wondered if it would be any good. What made me dubious to try it was what you had said earlier about other RPGs. Too many focus on graphics when RPGS were always about storyline. (and some about re-inventing gameplay.) If you really like it that much, maybe I should try it out. :)

I've played both IV and V. I enjoyed playing both, but V is definitely my favorite out of the two. I'm still looking for the other games of the series so I can play them as well.

the best of the series are II and V, altho I is pretty good, too. the only thing is, SuikoII is hard as heck to find (and virtually impossible to find for under $60 and can get over the $120 mark) and SuikoI is almost as hard to find (and not quite as expensive).

I keep hoping they release the PSP version of I & II in North America just because it will be a huge boost to the fandom. granted, they fixed the Matilda Glitch in II in the PSP version (which was really handy for leveling up and getting some strong recruits early) but that doesn't affect the overall gameplay.

last winter I really lucked out and found SuikoII for only $40 and snatched it so I could give it to my oldest niece as a Christmas present (and I picked up SuikoI for her as well for $30 and made use of a buy two get one free deal the used music/video/game store had to pick up Lunar II for myself free of charge). her dad, my older bro, is over 10 years older than me so there's only one more year's difference between her age and and mine than there is between my brother's and mine.

I really want the first two and the fifth game. I got into the series when IV came out, and managed to at least find III. I didn't get a chance to get V though - I'm hoping I'll still find it around. :3

I haven't actually played much of III yet though. I haven't even finished IV. The one thing that disappointed me was that IV had a somewhat...boring battle system. The ship battles, however, were really fun! I don't know why I had so much fun with those. I didn't do too badly with the sword battles, but they're not frequent and I didn't find them noteable.

I don't mind the story and such in IV though. I do like having a ship like that, and reading notes from team members in that weird box...it was pretty interesting.

I'm likely going to import the first two games since PSP is region free and they're out in Japan. Though, that is assuming I can find a game script for them. I just don't have the money at the moment to even do that - much less get the first two in English. T_T I really, REALLY wish they'd release the PSP versions of I and II here as well. That'd be nice. I always hear a lot of my friends talking about them. :( It's hard hearing how great they are and always being left out.

The Suikoden series is one of my favorite RPG series,I love the fact that you can get so many Characters, and you get your own castle and all the little mini games lol but the main thing I love is the stories of the games they are always interesting,I think my 2 favorite games would have to be 1 and 5 though I have never had the chance to play 2 due to the rarity of the game and when I can find it it is well over $100 :(

Javert 03-05-2008 06:19 AM

I have only played the first one- and I liked it. But I don't think I'll ever play the sequels. From what I've seen, the basic plot is the same for all of the games. :(. I may have liked the first one, but I didn't like it enough to find 101 people again who didn't want to be found in the first place. ^^;

Kyuuki 03-06-2008 12:03 AM

yeah, the genmeral plot theme is the same in all the games, but there's vartiations to all the stories as well. most RPGs are basically "hero goes against antagonistic force" types as well, with Suikoden the plot similaries are that the force is always a nation and involve going against them by building your own force (either by creating a new nation to take the pace of the old or restoring an existing nation) and leading it. there's always a True Rune (or halves of one) in it and part of the plot focuses on that, but with the True Runes being different you get plenty variation in that.

Yurisa 03-06-2008 02:17 AM

i dabble with the series *nods*
Suikoden III was NOT my cup of tea...and yet i still have it *dies*
i think they only made so many copies and now it's not as easy to get a hold of.

unfortunately this is one series i haven't played too much...i'm more into Final Fantasy ((but of course who isn't)) and Lunar...i LOVE Lunar!! <33

Kyuuki 03-07-2008 05:02 AM

I liked that Suikoden III had a gryphon you had at the very start. granted, II had one as well, but you're already halfway thru the game or more when you finally get him.

kuro hitomi 03-09-2008 06:58 PM

Suikoden 3 is the best suikoden out there.

dark_tenshi17 03-15-2008 10:12 PM

I've got them all except for Suikoden Tactics. I've only played I and V though  I really liked five because of Freyjadour (main character). I definitely need to find time to play the rest of them.

dichromaticbeagle 03-18-2008 06:11 AM

Suikoden II for the win. :3

I don't recall how many times I played that game many summers ago.. XD My friends and I even held competitions as to who would get all 108 stars first THEN finish the game. :3

Sae 03-18-2008 08:21 PM

Suikoden II was one of the first RPGs I ever played, so it's always held a very special place in my heart and is, to this day, my favorite game of all-time.

I went back and played the first, and it was quite lovely, although very short (to me; I finished it in about a day).

The third and fourth were major disappointments to me (although the third had a very interesting narrative scheme), and I have refused to play Suikoden Tactics.

However, as you said, the fifth in the series has restored a lot of my faith in the games. I haven't beat it as of yet, but I've played a good way into it, and am totally delighted by the fact that it feels so much like the first and second.

I also have the Blue Moon rune tattooed on my right hip; Sierra is my favorite character from II, so I'm trying to plan a picture of her around it.. just gotta get some money together to actually get it. heh

I guess no one won, then, because you can't just rush out and get all of the characters, and THEN play through the game.

I've played through them all except for IV. I didn't get far with that one; it just seemed like too different a game, and I wasn't into any of the characters or storylines.

Suikoden I was fantastic. It renewed my interest in RPGs, and the music, characters, and plot are all incredible. It's just sheer classic all around, exactly what a fantasy role play game should be.

Suikoden II got really bad reviews when it came out. I was really sad when I read an article that claimed "even fans of the first game won't want to waste their time" with it. It even dissed the music. But I loved the first Suikoden too much to lose faith. And it's a darn good thing, because now that game is really expensive, and you can hardly find it outside of Ebay. And the reviews were WRONG. It has better music, better graphics, better characters, and and equally interesting, if not better, plot. I've played through that game countless times, and I STILL haven't seen everything. I only recently learned that there are BATH SCENES when you put certain characters in certain bath environments. I'd had no idea.

Suikoden III was a truly excellent game. But it was hardly Suikoden. I loved the characters and how their fates intertwined, but it really broke tradition. And the graphics were pretty bad. They're just WEIRD. And I hate the squishy sounds people make when they walk, and their bizarre doll-like faces.

Suikoden V may be my very favorite in the series. People are right in saying that it goes back to the beginning, and really fits in with the traditional Suikoden spirit. Plus the characters are completely amazing and fantastic, the plot is so deviously twisted and totally epic, and the music is beautiful.

I loved the first two games. They were so much fun and the characters for the most part were great.

I would have liked the third one better if it had stayed with just one viewpoint. I don't know, switching around just pulled me out of the game. Another problem I had was how a lot of the Stars didn't seem to have much personality.

The fourth one just bored me to tears.

The fifth one, though. I think it's my favorite of the series.

Suzuricho 03-20-2008 08:33 PM

Ah. My FFXI username was based on my favorite useless character of all time: Melodye, the only person who can use the sound rune of Suiko 1. I love her expression and her hat - and I don't know anyone else who'd want to equip the rune that just makes different sounds when you move the cursor. XD That name has become one of my many names to refer to myself as in RPs, video games, and other stuffs because of her useless character. I like the underappriciated!

I adore Suikoden 1. Gremio was my favorite character, followed by Viktor. Losing Gremio had me in tears all over the place - and I cried in gratitude when he finally came back to me. As long as both Gremio and Viktor were available, I had them with me! Gremio used the Earth runes for protection or the Water runes for healing with my group... just depends.

I haven't finished Suiko2 yet, but my husband bought it as he loves the game to pieces. We also have 3 and Tactics, but I'm playing them in order. As we have the rarest ones, the rest will fall into place shortly.

PS: Did Tengaar look like female Ranma of Ranma 1/2 to you?

sabishisa 03-27-2008 07:01 PM

YES! Its surprisingly hard to find Suikoden fans ^^; My GF, who's also a game buff, says that its the type of game you either love or hate. I suppose she's right sine most people I've talked to about it fell in one of those two categories. I love them. I've played I, III, IV, Tactics and V. I've only finished I and IV though. I've really got to get back to playing V soon. III seems to lack a little to me... It just doesn't catch me like the others.

I ADORE I. Gremio is just the cutest thing ever!! I was so sad when he died. And Kirkis~ He's so adorable. I was hooked on that game the moment I started playing it.

I thought IV was really good too. I loved the main characters, especially Snowe. The only thing I really disliked was the amount of random battles you got in when sailing @[email protected] Every two freakin' seconds, I swear. But I loved the netting and digging. That was fun.

V blew me away. GORGEOUS. Every bit of it was just beautiful and the story line is so awesome. Best that I've played so far.

Tactics is really fun and challenging. I like the different battle system and from what I've played so far, the story seems really good.

And like I said before, I really haven't been caught by III yet. Hugo looks awesome, I just love his character design and the whole tribal thing but other than that, I just didn't really get into it.

I can't wait to get my hands on II. Its the only one I don't own. I will one day ^^; I've heard nothing but good stuff about it so I can't wait.

Ritz 05-18-2008 02:39 AM

I stopped playing the series after III, so I find it encouraging to hear that V was quite good. Now if only my PS2 wasn't constantly on its last legs...

I love the castle building aspect and all the side-features. The plays in III were really cute. And I like the detective that tells you more backstory on the characters.

Definitely loved the first two and was sad that III didn't have as many returning familiar faces. But Luc and Futch were enough to make me squeal in delight.
