'80s Movies: The Good, the Bad, and the Unbearably Cheesy

Ah, the '80s. It was a time of big hairdos, baggy sweaters, and lots of tight colorful spandex....Do you remember Richard Simmons? Prince? Pogs? The fall of the Berlin Wall?

Well, whether you do or not, there's one thing you don't need to have lived through to experience: movies. Most of us can recognize '80s movies right off the bat for their hairdos, the clothing they're wearing, the slang they use, and the slightly out-of-date picture quality and special effects.

The most memorable '80s movies for me are Darkman (which was hilariously cheesy and made in 1990, but hush!), Blade Runner (which is still very good), and Legend (bad, very very bad).

What '80s movies do you like the best, hate the most, or laugh at even though they aren't meant to be funny?

cupcakes 01-01-2009 08:08 AM

I liked Blade Runner and Clue, and the first three Indiana Jones movies came out in the 80s (which I totally adore), and Nightmare on Elm Street & Friday the 13th were cool : D

Although it also seems like in the 80s there started to be a lot more teen romance comedy stuff which I still don't really care for even today :V

Captain Howdy 01-01-2009 11:24 PM

Gah! I have so many 80s movies swimming around in my head. I don't know if I could name them all. :gonk:

@cupcakes ~ I love Clue. It's a funny movie that never gets old, from my perspective. I've enjoyed it since I was a kid. For a long time I had a second generation, poor quality copy but only within the last year did I finally get it on DVD. ;D

Sforzando 01-02-2009 03:03 AM

Um, was Footloose an 80s movie? I don't really know times. What about the James Bond movies? I think I have all those movies. Or the old Star Wars movies? The old Superman and Batman movies...Ghost Busters, Karate Kid series, 3 Ninjas series, Back to teh Future, Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, and of course the Indiana Jones series.

Now, I'm sure not all of those (if any) are 80's movies, but I do know those are all older than me. And I listed those just from looking at one of my movie shelves. Oh, what about Adventures in Babysitting? Or The Frisco Kid? Or Maverick? I really dont know when any movies came out.

Claudia 01-02-2009 05:02 AM

I know sometimes I've seen old movies from these days that I liked and I realized, this is no good.
Why did I like that stuff. It happens.

Captain Howdy 01-02-2009 07:48 AM

:O Ah! Here's a great 80's film!

Heathers - starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. It's about popularity and death and murder and suicide and all that good stuff. A top notch black comedy. ;D

jellysundae 02-05-2009 12:33 AM

I LOVE 80's movies! They're what I grew up with and I still really enjoy a LOT of them.

These are some of my 80's favourites:

Beverley Hills cop
Flight of the Navigator
Gremlins
*Batteries not Included
Back to the Future
E.T. (of course!)
The Lost Boys - quite possibly one of the best movie soundtracks ever, too.
Dark Crystal
Desperately Seeking Susan
Crocodile Dundee
Anything with Tom Hanks in it
All Leathal Weapon and Mad Max films
Married to the Mob
Terminator
Bill & Ted - can still amuse me, though it's a little bit irritating now.

Hate hate HATE The Breakfast Club though.

Watching the right kind of cheeseball 80's movie is like a panacea to me, you can forget about everything and just wallow in nostalgia and entertainment for a couple of hours, it's great :)

Saisei 02-05-2009 12:45 AM

Hmm, lessee. Perhaps I'll just read from the DVD rack. http://blog.ffosg.com/emoticons/lurk.gif

Back to the Future
Airplane (Just makes it...1980 ftw)
Breakfast Club http://blog.ffosg.com/emoticons/badrazz.gif @ Jelly
Ferris Bueller
The Goonies
Clue (OMG YES!)
Bill & Ted
Rain Man
Spaceballs
Real Genius
Star Wars (ESB and RotJ came out in the 80s)
The Big Chill

The list goes on...
I feel old now. :(

Captain Howdy 02-05-2009 08:03 AM

Aw, no love for the Breakfast Club from jellycakes? It's a great film. And me and Kin outnumber you two to one, so nyeh...

I also loved Weird Science. I may be alone on that though. >_>

Saisei 02-05-2009 01:09 PM

It was definitely better than Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles (though, Sixteen Candles has a special, small place in my heart.) :)

Ghost Love Score 02-05-2009 10:01 PM

Labyrinth
Gleaming the Cube
Legend of Billi Jean
Never ending story

i Don't care... 80's moves are Still pretty good to me..

Rumpus Ruu 02-05-2009 10:29 PM

I adore 80s movies. These are my favorites. We had an 80s night marathon not too long ago at my house.:

Labyrinth (<3!!! David Bowie! Hot stuff)
The Lost Boys
Back to the Future
Airplane (Got it for Christmas~)
Never Ending Story
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Last Cruisade
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Ghost Busters
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
When Harry Met Sally
The Karate Kid
Foot Loose <3!!
Beetlejuice
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (The ULTIMATE movie! I really suggest this for people who take a class trip. My class watched this four years running and it was an amazing tradition <3)

Captain Howdy 02-05-2009 11:17 PM

@Kin ~ Sixteen Candles is great cause it has something for everyone. It has Comedy. It has Romance. It has Long Duck Dong. ... What more does a person need?

Stardragon 02-06-2009 12:52 AM

I remember the movies The Last Starfighter and The Wraith. Both movies were great . Both had lots of action and explosions. The Wraith was about this dead guy coming back for revenge and his love who was taken from him by his Murderer.

Every once in a while I still give Chi that "what's happening, hotstuff" line sometimes. :)

jellysundae 02-11-2009 12:12 AM

Kin :P I don't like many US highschool movies anyway, but 80s ones are the worst, and Breakfast Club is the epitome of them really xD

I like Weird Science, but it's not on my favourites list. Ghostbusters is another that I'll always watch when it's on, plus any from the Alien series(first one of those is SO old now, same as Mad Max, 70s o.o)

Quite a lot that you people are mentioning I've never heard of though, they clearly didn't make it across the Pond.

I suppose I have a second wave into which I'd list a great deal of others, including:

Flashdance
Footloose
Ferris Beuller
Beetlejuice
Edward Scissorhands
48 hours
Die Hard
Dreamscape - our English teacher showed us this instead of us having a lesson one day xD
Driving Miss Daisy
Dirty Dancing
Gregory's Girl
K-9
LadyHawke
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Romancing the Stone
Jewel of the Nile
Teenwolf
Young Guns

Some that I've never actually seen:

Neverending Story
Bladerunner
Labyrinth
Top gun
Legend
Clue

More that I detest:

The Goonies
Any Airplane film
Blues Brothers

Saisei 02-11-2009 05:20 PM

By the "any Airplane film" can I take that to mean you just don't like the Zucker brothers? (Naked gun, police squad, etc.)

Captain Howdy 02-12-2009 12:23 AM

@jelly ~ Aw, how can you hate airplane? D: It's gold!
Quote:

Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?
Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.

And Goonies hating! :gonk: The Goonies was one of me favorite films as a kid. It has everything! Action, adventure, romance, pirates, mutants and the Truffle Shuffle! Have you no soul, woman?

...

Also, I love Beetlejuice. ;D

Kamikaze Kendra 02-12-2009 04:23 AM

@ Ghost Love Score - Oh my gosh... Gleaming The Cube... I just almost fell out of my chair thinking about Tony Hawk and that movie.

I think I'm alone in my serious dislike for Ferris Beuller's Day Off.

My favorite 80's movies would have to be (including animation and in alphabetical order because I'm a freak like that):
Back To The Future
Batman
Beetlejuice
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Blues Brothers
Born On The 4th Of July
The Burbs
The Care Bears
The Care Bears II: A New Generation
Clue
Coming To America
Dark Crystal
Dead Poet's Society
Fame
Ghostbusters (1 & 2)
Gleaming The Cube
The Goonies
Grease 2
The Great Mouse Detective
Heathers
Labyrinth
The Last Unicorn
Little Monsters
Little Shop Of Horror
The Lost Boys
Lucas
Mannequin
Monty Python's The Meaning Of Life
My Best Friend Is A Vampire
The Never Ending Story (1 & 2)
Oliver And Company
Pink Floyd: The Wall
The Princess Bride
Purple Rain
Sixteen Candles
Splash
Spaceballs
Teen Witch
Teen Wolf
This Is Spinal Tap
Weird Science
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Willow

... I'm kind of entertainment obsessed.

Cherry Who? 02-16-2009 02:21 AM

I can think of three that I like. Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Bladerunner and Red Dawn.

*reads through the thread to be reminded of other movies*

Labyrinth was okay. I only watched it for David Bowie. xD The puppets sort of ruined it for me. I mean, it's fine that they used puppets, but they made them SO cheesy. If they had made the puppets less ridiculous and a little more serious, I would have liked the movie a lot more.
Most of the "main character" puppets were fine, but the random ones that hung out with Bowie made me gag. ><

I still have yet to see Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, etc. I know I need to.

I LOVED the Neverending Stories and the second Wizard of Oz when I was little. But I haven't seen them since. They'd probably make me want to bash my head into something now. xD

The Princess Bride is cute and very quotable, but I wouldn't put it on my list of favorite movies. It's close, though. If it were on, I'd watch it.

EDIT: Holy crap, I'm the first person to mention Red Dawn? What is wrong with you people? xDD

amyrex2 02-16-2009 02:58 PM

I was a sucker for the teen romance movies. Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, Better Off Dead. The movies that really are bad, yet for some reason young kids are still watching these types of movies. They just have less subtle sex references. I havd to to watching this genre after American Pie. It went to far for me. But I did like Super Bad.

Ugh... shot through the heart.

As a long time Muppet fan, you just killed a little bit of me, Cherry. D:

... *dies* x_x

fairywaif 02-17-2009 01:45 AM

Ferris Bueller, Princess Bride, the Neverending, the Future movies....all the movies I watched with my older sister that she watched as a child. Good times. She has such good taste!

Saisei 02-17-2009 08:19 PM

Oh dear god. I feel just a little bit too old now. I thought The Princess Bride came out after 1990.

Sorry, Howdy! xD; Muppets are just too ridiculous for me...
They're fine in a muppety setting, but not when everything else in the movie is a little bit more serious and dark. It just... wasn't appropriate for the movie, I think.
Muppets are fine when in the correct setting, if that's any consolation.

Kin - Oh, did it? It was early 90s though, right? I mean, the camera quality was kind of low.
