Let's see...
I definitely recommend Darren Aronofsky movies: Pi and Requiem for a Dream.
The Diving Bell & the Butterfly.
Gosh, I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now. T_T
The Kite Runner was EXCELLENT, and I thoroughly enjoyed the Science of Sleep. Donnie Darko is also a great movie btw. I saw S. Darko the other weekend and it wasn't nearly as good.
And how is Dr. Horrible serious and thought-provoking? It's good, but it's not really a "thinking" movie/show. XP

Eye of the Beholder, Fight Club, and possibly the Matrix movies + The Animatrix. I'll also second V for Vendetta and Donnie Darko.
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was good. We watched it in my psychology class, which was a shame because then when I teared up I didn't dare let myself cry.
Oh! Oh! And Pink Floyd's The Wall. You can't go past that.

I guess what happened with Penny could be considered serious/thought provoking? I'm not entirely sure either... But it was good!

I went to see this with friends, and please know that I LOVE movies, all kinds of movies including art films, but I thought this movie was terrible. At the end, we didn't want our money back, we wanted our life back, it just felt like it had no point and the credits would never roll. When a movie is bad, we say, "Wow, that movie was 2046."

I actually bought this movie... I thought it would be really good judging from a preview for it that I saw. I tried to like it as well but it really did seem pointless. I kept waiting for it to have meaning or for the ending to be good at least, but it was dissappointing. :( It also seemed really long, maybe if I watched it again I might like it, but I don't know if that will ever happen. :P This movie is thought provoking, in that it makes you think wtf did I just watch. :sarcasm:

Try a David Lynch movie, such as Mulholland Drive or Eraserhead.
Or watch a serial killer movie, like Zodiac or Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.
I guarantee you won't be able to sleep you'll be thinking about it so much.

I'm note sure if its on the same level you're looking for, but Magnolia is a good one.
It follows a bunch of characters and over time you see how their lives are connected.

Oh! I can contribute to this thread. The Bumblebee Flies Anyway is a pretty good movie to watch. Finding Forrester is one of my favorites. Nnn..There is one that totally fits into the subject thread, but I despise the ending quite strongly. Millon Dollar Baby is quite thought provoking and serious. I warn you though, my hardcore friend got teary-eyed cause of the ending. Through-out the whole movie, it's awesome so don't get me wrong. But it sets you up for a rather jolting fall at the end. >.< Would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I glad I watched it? Yes, I am. I know there are other movies I've seen that're pretty good to watch, but I don't remember any off the top of my head. There's another one that's like..totally awesome and another tear jerker, but I forget the title. >_>
