Weight Loss Reality TV Shows
The Biggest Loser...
Dance Your Ass Off... Both of those are weight loss competition reality tv shows.. Both of those shows kick people off... Don't you think it would be a better idea to just disqualify the "loser" from winning the ultimate prize, and let them stay so they can continue to lose weight.. Kicking someone off the show for losing only 2 lbs instead of 3 or 4 lbs seems very discouraging to me. I know I would be.. especially since I battle with my own weight.. and if I only lose 1 lb or none at all, it's very discouraging.. imagine if I were kicked off a show! I'd want to go eat everything in site. >.< |
I agree, as long as they weren't on the show anymore but more of "behind the scenes".
|
Well, I feel like, they could even be on the show still..
But they just can't "win or lose" anything, besides weight; of course. But you're right, even if they weren't on the show, they should still be able to participate in the events while the show is running. |
But the shows are more to entertain people.. I don't think the producers care anything about the contestants. So they wouldn't keep them on just to help them.
And what do you mean by.. Quote:

I think it's pretty harsh to kick someone off the show and just cut them loose. I think they should at least help them develop a plan that they can put into practice in their home lives.
I really don't watch those kinds of shows anymore. I am overweight; no, to be perfectly honest, I'm clinically morbidly obese. I'm trying to lose weight, but seeing these people drop five or more pounds a week just takes the wind right out of my sails. My doctor says I should be losing 2 or less; is it any wonder I get discouraged? Intellectually, I know that the people on the show have trainers and dieticians and all the support a person could ever want. But here at home, I have to play all those roles, and I have next to no willpower whatsoever. Besides, with my temper, I'd have knocked Jillian on her tiny little backside and sat on her XD |
HEY LEE: By that, I basically meant that they wouldn't have any part in the competitions. They would just do the activities..
But you're right, the producers don't care about the contestants; just as long as it's good TV. Sassy: I'm sure I'm in the same position as you. I have no willpower, especially in my depressed state of mind. I'm sure once I get a job I'll have a little more willpower to lose weight. But as of right now, I'm just in the dumps, with no support. I'm not exactly sure who "Jillian" is.. but if you're referring to Jillian Michaels, I'm right there with ya, sister. I'll give you the satisfaction of sitting on her head.. I'll take the legs, so I can break them. >O bahahah |
I totally agree with you. But a lot of people only watch these shows for entertainment, and for amusment. Even though i don't think there's anythnig funny about it.

I think "Dance Your Ass Off" is a good concept, as a less-than-built dancer myself.
Unfortunately, when these sorts of thing air, it always turns into "har-har, look at the fat people on TV." And that's just not cool. -_- |
yeah, its mean. i've only seen dance your ass off, but i didn't like it much. all you get to watch are these chubby people dancing with little twigs of people. the fact that they make them dance with skinny people just isn't fair, it's not a pretty comparison. don't get me wrong, i just mean that it can't help the contestants' self-esteem, you know? like, some obese lady has to dance with this little skeleton of a person, that must not make her feel very good. and i would be very discouraged if i got kicked off he show, i'd go and eat everything that didn't eat me first. but you're right, it's not like they care. they just want to make good tv. and it does turn into people laughing at the fat people in revealing outfits dancing on tv. and that is just mean.

I want less reality TV. I'm so tired of it. It costs less money to make it, it isn't clever, and the purpose of it is to make the viewers feel better about themselves. Whatever happened to the classic dramedy... -sigh- |
As the topic is better suited to the Media forum, i'mma go ahead and move it along. ;D

Mmm.. Well, since reality shows need to sell, they have to throw in drama.. that's the part of any reality show that I don't really like...oo'' But the one thing about the weight loss ones- is that they take the extremes, like a person who you may be larger then the average person, and bring them back down to average weight. This brings hope to those people who have been desperate to stop bad eating related habits and such.. for that, I don't mind too much about weight loss reality shows (Over the other types)
About kicking people off- well, I don't remember any case were a contestant who was kicked off ever stopped their workouts? :S But to some extent I agree. If a group of people truely had the people's intrest in mind, then they would keep them for as long as they can- to help as much as they can... (Bahhh such a long message...><'') |
I know what you mean. I just don't get why they would kick them off and prevent them form keeping on losing weight.
Though I will say that the biggest loser was started when reality shows where still very new and the elimination part of the show was a MUST. |
I think it is wierd they should not do a game show and kick people off because then they might stop losing pounds and start gaining again.
