Princess and the Frog

I can't wait for this movie to come out in December. It's Disney's return to traditional animation, it's exciting. I've heard rumor that if the movie does well they are going to continue putting out more 2D films, so finger crossed!

I've seen several trailers and a few behind the scenes things and I have to say, this film looks absolutely amazing in every aspect.

I know a fair amount of controversy has been surrounding this film because the main character is black. Personally I think people just need to shut it. I know many of those complaining are from the black community, but many also in the black community think the attacks on the film are ridiculous (read an article about this some months ago).

Originally Tiana (the main character) was a scullery maid (think Cinderella, they do all the house work) and that sparked an outrage because, how could white people depict black people in such a degrading way... really? I know from the article I stated above, many shot back that the movie takes place in old New Orleans, it's just how life was back then and there really is no harm in portraying the character as something that was normal (and part of history). Personally I look at it and say, there were white princess treated terribly (again I'll point out Cinderella, but there are others like Snow White. Even look at Mulan, they played hard on women being lowly creatures and in that film the female wasn't white either), so what difference does the color of the skin make? They point is to start the character at an all time low and raise them up through hope, love and determination.

But I suppose any time a character is made there are going to be quarrels. I just think the claims of Princess and the Frog being racist are unwarranted.

What are your view on the film? Excited for it?

I had been wondering if the princess being black was going to cause any controversies. I think that it is absolutely ridiculous that it has. It is a good thing that Disney is trying to be more DIVERSE. They are not trying to be racist at all. Honestly, what makes some people think the ways that they do? It's outrageous.

How can the world be striving for equality if they can't accept diversity even in a children's movie? Are they afraid that the children will be offended by the color of the princess' skin? Enough, already, people.

i can't wait to see this movie. i really miss the old Disney animation movies.

I LOVE the idea of the princess being black, and for one reason, really; she's not just a classic "White" princess simply painted brown. They gave her a history, a setting that is historically accurate! They gave her the proper voice and mannerisms, and set her in a period that was perfect for a black character! I could see a HUGE outcry if they had taken the typical white princess; blond hair, blue eyes, white voice.. and just colored her to be black. That would have been a disaster! But they seemed to have really tried to give her a rich heritage and actuate beginnings, and I don't really see how anyone could complain.

You know, I never looked through articles discussing the movie's main character until I read this. I do recall coming arcoss the movie's issue once, but never knew exactly why it upset people.

I had thought that it caused an uproar because the Princess was a black girl in New Orleans. More of a location issue, really. Like: "How dare Disney make her black in that city. Not everyone there is black! How racist and utterly stereotypical!". (Although it is true that the general population is African American. But to some people it's just: 'How dare Disney be accurate'). Or, the other thing I assumed got everyone's panties in a twist was the villan role. "Oh, the villan is a black voodoo doctor. Because everyone knows black people are the only 'voodooers' around. D:". I apparently read too deeply into it. Comparing my interpretation to your post... Now I feel kind of foolish. D;

Me, I never let race, gender, or even creed get in the way of a movie. I could honestly care less. As long as they keep the story interesting and play it out well, I've no problems. I hope that doesn't make me sound like a bigot or something.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this movie. I, just like everyone else, am a huge fan of Disney's eariler works involving 2D animation. The style is just more... classic and timeless. So the thought of them bringing it back makes the child in me spastic. That, and the firefly cracks me up. I just know I'll love the movie with him as the comic relief. <33

I personally cannot wait for this movie despite all of the "racist" comments about. I think it's silly that so many people are complaining about it. It looks amazing and i'm so HAPPY to see something that's flat and not 3D. I've been waiting for this since their last non-3D / Digital movie... which I'm pretty sure was Mulan? I can't remember.

Erailea 10-06-2009 02:15 PM

No, Mulan wasn't their last. I think Lilo and Stitch was (was released in 2002), Mulan I believe came out in 1996

FAGGY CHAN 10-07-2009 05:56 PM

Yes. I want to see it.
I missed 2D animation soooo bad.
I'm so sick of 3D.

Mulan came out in 1998. Disney's last 2D animated film was Home on the Range, I believe. I always forget the last one they did. ^^;

But!
I am so very excited for this movie! You really have no idea, you're talking to the girl who plans on having a room dedicated to Disney in her future house! I'm obsessed with all of the old Disney classics, from Cinderella to 101 Dalmatians to Lilo and Stitch. All of them are very dear to me.
(My favorite movie of all time just happens to be The Lion King. ;D)

When they first started letting the public in on this new creation a year or so ago, I was dancing in my excitement. It was just so much of a surprise, what with all these crappy computer-animated films they keep making lately (I only like a few of these types of films from Disney/Pixar; UP is a prime example :D).
I'm an animation nerd, I watch all the commentaries on movies like this. It's just so amazing how they bring all the characters to life with a pencil!

And about the controversies around the movie:
I think people really just need to shut up. If I were black, I'd love that Disney were finally making a princess like me. I understand that people will have their qualms, but why constantly rag on Disney about them?
"Oh, you want her to be a slave?! Disney's racist!"
-No. Cinderella and Snow White were treated the same way. And if I'm recalling correctly, they were white. It's not an issue of skin tone.
"Her butt is too black! And why are they trying to make her profile look so black? Her lips are obviously too big! Are they trying to mock us? Disney's racist!"
-No. They were trying to make the girl BLACK. I don't recall this being such an issue when Disney animated Mulan. I don't remember the Chinese population being angry for Disney drawing a Chinese character with slanted eyes. Disney's just trying to honor the people's heritage. Like someone said in another post, Disney couldn't have very well just drew a white princess and painted her in black. THAT would be disrespectful.

The whole thing is just too ridiculous. Disney isn't trying to subliminally tell people that blacks are terrible people, and they're not trying to mock the African race by giving the main character features that most of the race has. They're just trying to stay true to her and her history.

I think that this movie will be simply amazing, and I really hope the controversies surrounding it stop.

I don't know... It matters if you consider the crappy sequels they've been coming out with lately. If you consider those, the last 2-D they came out with was "The Little Mermaid 3." It stank, if you're wondering.

Except Disney Sequels NEVER are/were good. Their originals have always been good though (not counting their 3D, though I did rather enjoy Bolt)

I know I am totally excited for this movie to come out!! and I agree the people who complain need to shut it hee hee
I haven't loved a Disney movie since Beauty and the Beast and the Little Mermaid were first out. I've pretty much hated everthing ever since because it's been complete crap!.
My sister who studied animation in grad shcool, informs me on movie stuff a lot. And she says that John Lasseter from Pixar has taken over Disney's animation department. So this means there should be plenty of good things to come. Finnally!! I'm so happy that Disney has finally returned to the tradition 2D animation. It's been a long wait to enjoy anything good from them. Can't wait to see this one :)

The animation director that was responsible for those sequils has left. John Lasseter has taken his place which is super exciting because he is awesome!! My sister said when he started at Disney he had alot ofthe crappy scenes for the movies currently in production reworked! Hee hee he's AWESOME!!

Erailea 10-08-2009 03:14 AM

@ nette - does your sister work for Disney? As far as I know (from hearing Pixar people talk at my school) Lasseter only spends a few days over at Disney, most of his time is at Pixar. I have no doubt he is something of a supervisor, but somehow I doubt he's the "high ruler" so to speak. It'd be impossible for one man to run two gigantic companies.

nette 10-08-2009 04:45 AM

No she works for Sony though she is trying to get a job there. But these are things that she hears. I think mostly from her former USC instructors.
Maybe he's transitioning. Now that you mention it I'm not sure if he's the top boss. But he does seem to have alot of say.
Were do you go to school? My sister graduated May '08 so maybe you knew eachother. She went to USC.

Erailea 10-08-2009 12:44 PM

No, I don't know her, Haha. I graduated this past May from RCAD. I'm currently looking for a job (along with many others who graduated with me, all because the of crummy economy).

I am very very excited for this movie. I miss the old Disney cartoon style. I really hope it's as good as it looks!

Hal B Noire 10-10-2009 01:33 AM

Oh I am definitely looking forward to this movie. It doesn't matter what controversy is placed in it, because the overall point is that Disney is getting back to the real good stuff that it built it's reputation on.

hopefulheart 10-10-2009 03:05 AM

i am kinda excited to see this movie but i saw the advertisements and it seems like they are just going to make it a very modern fairydale. disney isn't suppose to be like that i don't think. i love the old disney movies, without the cell phones, computer, internet, stuff like that you know. even last week i read this children's book for some reason and it had mentioned things like a decaf skinny latte, and a "royal" cellphone. that is so stupid! fairytales should be set in the olden days, with dragons, and princes. does anyone else think that too?

Oh I totally agree to all of you!
I love and am so glad that Disney has finally gone back to their roots! I haven't liked their movies since the days of Beauty and the Beast and back.
Pop culture in traditional storyies and escpecially kids books is just aweful. They don't need that stuff to make them look good.
I hope The Princess and The Frog is good too. I have fond memories of seeing this story on a VHS movie of this I think I must've gotten it from the library.

Sho-Shonojo 10-10-2009 02:29 PM

I was able to watch the first five minutes before Disney took it down, though you might be able to find it somewhere.

The opening looked absolutely beautiful, I just can't wait for this movie to come out.

I'm really glad that John Lasseter is taking a prime position in the animation department. I'm hoping he's going to turn everyone's eyes back to 2D animation.

nette 10-10-2009 09:04 PM

I hope so too! :) Now that you mention it I watched a clip on youtube. It don't it was five minutes long though. It looked good from what I saw.

Erailea 10-11-2009 02:29 AM

I saw snippets of it when Disney came to my school last year. They showed the process of one scene from 1st pass animation all the way through color. And then they talked a bit about it and showed a few other short clips. It looks freaking amazing. The whole feel of it just pulls me right back into my youthful days when I would sit and watch the classic Disney films.

RisikaFox 10-11-2009 12:13 PM

What, another Disney Princess? I can't wait, although I'll have to look up the trailers and such. I just saw a big advertisement at the theatre yesterday. I personally think it's awesome that they're branching out more, and besides, if they really are returning to the older style of animation, Disney fans worldwide will rejoice. xD

Shooga! 10-11-2009 07:01 PM

First I have heard of this movie and if its back to the old school animation I'm happy, I will probably just wait for it to be out on DVD so my daughter can see it, thats why I love having a little kid, it gives me an excuse to see all the new kids movies and the likes xD

ainebella 10-12-2009 02:53 AM

YAY DISNEY IS GOIGN BACK TO THERE GOOD OLD DAYS!!!!!*squeels and dose a dance*
I miss the old disney, 2D is way better than 3D i think, too much technogical if its 3D.
