Ok, so I have a question to ask. And this may just be something that I hear just because I guess I have alot of friends who are all interested in this kind of thing.
But it seems like quite a few people I know are all these fans of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, like with this new Alice In Wonderland coming up next year. It seems like every year a new movie comes out with both of them collaborating together, I end up going to these movies with my group of friends. And also it seems like just about every year I get to hear all this stuff about how Tim Burton is the best director ever and how every one of his movies are masterpieces and also how amazing an actor Johnny Depp is.
Really, I'll admit a few of them are really pretty good. Edward Scissorhands and Sweeny Todd weren't bad. (Nightmare Before Christmas was good too, but Johnny Depp wasn't in that one) But movies like Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... Eh not so much. I thought both of them were just average to be honest.
So what I'm really saying is how tired I am of hearing Alice in Wonderland is going to be the best movie ever just because of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton. Like I do want to go see it, but I can't say that I'm that seriously pumped about it. (Johnny Depp looks like a transvestite to me. Like more crazy than in CATCF.) Don't get me wrong I think Tim Burton is a good director, and Johnny Depp has talent. I just want to be able to judge the movie just for what it is. Not because of names. And every time I try to explain this to them, they just go "Oh, but it's TIM BURTON and JOHNNY DEPP." And then I just give up and let it be.
What do you guys think?

I'm a fan of Depp/Burton movies, yes. But, I am not overly thrilled for the new Alice in Wonderland. I like the Disney version much better than any remake could do. Same with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Sure, it was bound to have a remake. But the way that they did it... just did not make me smile.

Honestly they kind of irk me.
I love Alice in Wonderland (the book, anyway) and the thought of Tim Burton doing this movie completely annoys me. Now it's just going to be another fad all over Hot Topic and what have you. Now, I know it's already big and such, but I am just not looking forward to this movie.
Also I think Johnny Depp is overrated. Yes, he has some good movies, but people always overlook the movies that are completely awful. D;

In my honest opinion Johnny Depp is an awesome actor and Tim Burton is a pretty good director.
The thing about the new Alice in Wonderland is going to be how dark it is. Every single film that Tim Burton has done has turned out to be dark in some way weither it be dark-humor like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or dark-romance like Corpse Bride. I've never read the book, but from what I know, it's supposed to be a very whimsical story, so I don't know how he's going to change it to suit his prediliction.
Personally, I like Burton's style, but I wasn't as impressed with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory because I love Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory so much. I don't know how much I'm going to like Alice.
As for them being awesomeness personified as a team, I admit that I've loved most of the movies they've made together. Depp has the right stuff to play the quirky heroes that Burton likes, so he makes a great lead for Burton. However, I wouldnt' go so far as to say they're the best ever.

i really want to see the new Alice in Wonderland movie that they're doing together, but...knowing that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are involved, i know it's gonna have a creepy sense to it. just like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. i really like the old Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it was so cute and stuff. but the remake was creepy, altho i do like it. so, i'm afraid to watch Alice and Wonderland. i must admit, i never really liked the Disney version that much. its a good movie, but it just irritated me. i don't know why.
the main reason i want to see the new Alice and Wonderland movie is cuz i like the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp movies.

I had higher opinions of Tim Burtons films until I read a comment somewhere else from someone being rather negative. Saying that all of his films are the same Just Johnny Deppe and Helena C (sp?)are in different roles. It kind of burst my bubble.
But I still love a majority of his films. I agree though The Copse Bride was ok. I was actually really disappointed with that. Maybe it was the monochromatic tone with the only color being in the underground. Unlike The Nightmare Before Christmas which I love having darker color tones splashed around admidts all of the black and grey tones. Plus the story in TCB was rather boring.
Anyhoo Sweeny Todd was very good albeit weird and very gross. Edward Scissor hands well alwas ybe a charming classic in my book.
I really liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. My sister who had taught as an English teacher (now stay at home mom)said it was more accurate to the books than Willi Wanka was.
Alice In Wonderland looks good but I don't particuarly like the character designs. A little too flamboyant I guess or too much like clowns. Which I hate I don't trust clowns. But anyway I also I heard this is not suppose to be a true telling of the books. It's more of another telling after the fact I think is what they had meant.
Anyhoo I don't particuarly like the Disney version either. It's not accurate either being that it combined the two books into a mush and took some of my favorite things out of it.

Well, I liked the monochromatic tone in the living world versus the colorful underworld because it suited the attitudes of the inhabitants. The living were all Victorian-esque (probably why our hero and his living love are named Victor and Victoria) and dreary, so their world was all blue toned. The underworld was full of lively characters - which is deliciously ironic - so their world was very colorful. The colors are supposed to help show the counterpoint between the living and dead realms.
And yeah, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was closer to the actual book than Willy Wonka. Roald Dahl was actually pretty dark himself when I think back on some of his books.

I have never been a fan of Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movies. I've never liked a one. And, though this is slightly off topic, I think that Nightmare Before Christmas is overly dramatized crap. I have several friends/acquaintances that are obsessed with it and I have seen it several times, but I still don't get it. I think a lot of the Nightmare Before Christmas hype just comes from people trying to be cool. I'm not trying to start an argument here, but you all catch my drift.
The only Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie I have ever enjoyed was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. That was brilliant. I love Depp otherwise, though.

I can see what you mean by people just trying to be cool. But speaking for myself I have been a fan of stop motion animation for nearly my whole life. So I appreciate the film in not only that aspect but also a creativly designed view. Plus I love halloween to pieces :)
I think most people might like it because its unusual as far as halloween or any holiday animated film would go. Normally you get the happy go lucky stuff or something a bit too scary for kids sometimes. But this had two very popular holidays combined into one crazy film. So I think that gives it it's charm and appeal to the masses.

Nightmare Before Christmas appeals to me because of the play of colors and the entire idea of these little worlds devoted to holidays. However, I agree that the story isn't the best I've ever seen even though it is pretty good. I like the music the best, but Danny Elfman is awesome.

I haven't had a chance to see many of these movies actually. I'm wanting to see some of them though. Like Sweeney Todd and Edward Scissorhand. But I do have to say that I love the majority of Tim Burton's work that I've seen, and the majority of the movies that I've seen Johnny Depp in, he was a wonderful actor. I liked the First Pirates of the Caribbean (not so terribly fond of the other ones), Finding Neverland was a beautful movie, and Chocolat was phenominal (I know Depp wasn't a very big character in the movie, but I still think he did a good job). What I like about Depp is that he gets so into the character he's playing.
Tim Burton is quite a good director in my opinion. I liked Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the few others I've seen (I don't get much of a chance to watch movies)...I haven't heard much about this Alice in Wonderland movie that's coming out, so I can't give my opinion on it xD

The alice in wonderland is going to be weird, (but really it's alice in wonderland) but I want to see cause of Tim Burton. He has the way of putting a gloomy and morbid spin on most things and this being like a bright almost psychedelic movie. It's going to be weird to see it.
I'm not to much of a fan of Johnny Depp's movies to begin with I only really like him when he is in a Tim Burton's movie. And I only really like him in his movies cause he's well he does Dark and Gloomy well. And I don't mean looks but Acting well.
Also I don't really think the 2 of them look for publicity there work seems like almost indie work that got more hyped then it wanted.
But that's my rambly opinion... probably didn't make to much sense and I probably got way off your subject but lol I hoped it helped some.

They make some of the most interesting and dark gothic movies ever! I really like them a lot!! Tim Burton and Johnny Depp really complement each other quite well. My favorite movies have been so far - Sweeney Todd and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I love the windmill towards the end of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow movie.

I'll have work to do over thanksgiving break. But yeah...I'd need to watch more of the films they do together to get a better idea of what I think of Burton/Depp films

I've always loved Alice in Wonderland ( the book ) and I've always loved Tim Burrton and Johnny Depp, though I think that alot of people are expecting too much from it I think i'll enjoy it. Tim Burrton is really good at giving a story a story if you know what I mean, like how in the Choc. Factory when he gave Willy Wonka a story. XD

I'm a fan of Tim Burton but not so much for Jonny Depp..... After i saw Jonny as the mad hatter i thought that they just ruined the movie because his costume was bad, orange hair does not fit a mad man is what i think. I'm not excited to see the movie but it would be alright to watch for one time...

I love any movie Tim Burton makes and i love Johnny Depp also. I can't wait to see how Tim Burton did Alice and Wonderland. Yeah i like Disney's version of it but Tim trys to make it just like the books. Thats why i like how he did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, he did just like the book. And the songs the Umpa Lumpas sang where from the book. Yeah i still like the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but Tim Burton made the movie much better in my opinion. Tim Burton is a great gothic director and Johnny Depp is like icing on the cake

I agree that the hype takes away from some people actully being able to judge the move for what it is and not what they have told themselves or have had other people tell them. I love both Burton and Depp and think it's awesome that they colaborate thier talents. There work should still be watched one at a time and judged for what it really is. No one really wants to be good for there reputation and not there work.

I don't see the issue here. Without a doubt, Depp is a great actor. His awards and fan base prove it. Burton is a very unique director and his style is unmatched. They're both very talented. You're basically only having an issue because people are hyped simply because of this combination. I.. still don't see an issue. As far as I can see, even if it's just Burton or just Depp, people will still be hyped. It's not just the combination. People will be hyped over anything they've learned to love and enjoy. The issue is still unclear here. Being hyped =/= loving the movie they haven't seen yet.
If people have loved Burton's films in the past, and if people love Depp, they're going to think this movie is going to meet their expectations. I STILL don't see anything wrong with that.
Give people more credit, alright? If they see this movie and it utterly bombs, they're going to admit it. I don't see anyone judging it beforehand.
I think Depp as the Mad Hatter looks awesome. Finally, a unique rendition of such a psychotic character. I don't really understand how one could have issues with the character's appearance-is the Mad Hatter supposed to reflect a mundane demeanor...? I thought the Mad Hatter was supposed to come off as... uhm, mad. And eccentric. /headscratch

I am, personally, excited over the new Alice in Wonderland movie. Let's face it, Disney had it's own, played-down darkness in the Wonderland movie, and now Burton is actually going to deliver on the dark nature of the movie. The book was supposed to be about how one girl went mad anyway, right? Hell, the Queen of Hearts was going to cut Alice's head off! Pretty dark concepts being delivered, so I'm happy that Tim Burton is going to deliver the dark side to it. He has an appeal to a great deal of people.
As far as being tired of them, I'm not. It's like being secure in that I'm going to see a movie that I'll enjoy concerning Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. Depp is a really funny guy, and delivers on his characters. Burton just makes a beautiful movie, most of the time.
Most of this frustration is from the crazy fans who go overboard on the love, shoving it in people's faces and making new people hate something that they may otherwise enjoy. I hate overactive fans as the next person, which is why I avoid them when new movies come around. lol.

Honestly the whole thing is already over-rated to me, I may actually pass on seeing it at all, at least until someone in the house gets the dvd and I am bored out of my mind.....
I adore Johnny Depp, have been a fan since 21 Jumpstreet and have liked MOST of his movies.... but this one has zero appeal to me.
Tim Burton is a decent director, but I guess his movies have never been what I am really into.... he has a few I do like a lot, but I am not going to go near so far as to say he is the best director as that is just not true (my opinion).
This new Alice in Wonderland..... honestly the few preview things I have seen give me the creeps. Not in a "scary" kind of way either..... I love horror, I love Disney and the classics.... this is none of the above.
Give me Captain Jack any day..... Depp is getting to like these "creepy" roles a bit too much for me lol.

I like Burton because he has his own personal style. It would be so cool to have such a recognizable style in directing. People have even come up with a new verb: to burtonize.
It is very funny tho that Johnny Depp so often looks like a transvestite in Burton's movies : D I think he is secretly in love with Depp and dresses him up as a woman haha.
Depp always has these crazy roles.. But he's very talented I don't deny it. Yes yes he's cool. Jack Sparrow would've been so much boring without Depp and Brad Pitt playing him : D
I liked Sweeney Todd and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. Sleepy Hollow was hilarious : D I laughed so much.
Burton's movies without Depp... I'd say I liked Big Fish and Vincent.
ps. Can't wait to see the Wonderland movie : D

I am a Burton/Depp fan. Mostly a Depp fan, though.
I like Burton's films because he adds his personal touch to them. [If they are his own story, I mean. Like Corpse Bride and Edward Sissorhands.] The remakes he does is just to make the movie the way he would like to see it. And others like to see it from his view as well. Especially with the new Alice in Wonderland movie. I think Johnny Depp looks awesome as the Mad Hatter, but I'm not sure if I'll like the character itself. I'll just have to wait to see the movie. But at least Burton is expanding his choices of actors/actresses. Like Anne Hathaway. Never thought I'd see her in one of his films.
A part of me is kinda bored with Tim and Johnny always working together. Not saying they're a horrible pair, but its just becoming to common. Spread it out a little bit would be nice instead of a long line of collaborations.
Maybe after his Alice movie it will change. There's not scheduled yet from what I'm finding. I hope its one of his more original films instead of a remake or adaption from a play. :'D
