Alice in Wonderland
Questions for you:: Have you ever read the book, or books? Have you seen the old movie? Complaints? Things you're worried about? are you excited? ---------- I have read the books, and it makes me quite sad that Disney ruined the first movie by messing up characters and the plot line... It's my favorite childhood book, and I kinda wished they would have stuck with the story. ): I also wanted the Mock Turtle and Dutchess in there. :D FACT:: Tweedledee and Tweedledum were not in the first book. So why were they in the first movie? Who knows. They were only supposed to be in Alice's return. BUT! I'm super excited for this movie. :D I hope Tim Burton brings it to life like I imagined it to be...and I know Johnny Depp will be a grand Mad Hatter. |
I've read both books, and I loved the Disney version.
I'm worried about the Tim Burton one though, because the trailers make it seem as though the Mad Hatter is going to be the main character. And by making it a return to Wonderland, I'm afraid it will lose what made it originally so great for me: Alice's innocence, her childish logic, and curiosity. To me, it doesn't seem like Alice in Wonderland at all and should be called The Battle for Wonderland or something like that because that all it really is. But you never know until you see it. I've heard mixed revies, some saying that it is really great, others saying it's plot is too thin and will be a disappointment for those who love the books. So I'm going with the idea that it will be like Watchmen: A good movie, but terrible when compared to the book. |
i havnt read the book personally but i did see the disney version. i doubt if tim burtons will be as good as the original disney version and theres probably going to be some things wrong with(like the cast for intense, i hate johnny depp) but i guess it wont be such a bad film

I've read the books, I even have the Through the Looking Glass comic book. I've seen some of the movies. Honestly, I'm quite excited for the new movie. When I saw Alice in Wonderland when I was a kid, I thought it was the greatest thing in the world. After I read books and such, I felt like it was missing many elements. For example, one of my favorite parts in Through the Looking Glass was When the White Queen stabbed herself with a pin and did her little speech on that. While I do not like that this is going to be more of a second part of Alice in Wonderland, I do like that the White Queen is introduced and I'm hoping a few other characters that were left out will be as well.
So far, all of the movies have been an utter fail on adapting to the books. I've briefly explained my part on the original Disney movie, I've seen other films as well. One of the worst adaptations was a Russian horror in stop-motion called "Alice." It seems as though they just picked out parts of the movies and books and questioned them. For example, there was the scene with the tea party and the Mad Hatter and March Hair and Mouse. The Mouse was correctly porportioned to the book, but here's the scene (spoiler alert!): Alice enters the room, to which the Mad Hatter says "No Room! No Room!" Alice closes the door, then opens it again and is allowed to sit. The mad Hatter asks "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" Everyone sips tea, he takes out a watch and butters it, sticks it on his coat, then says "I need a clean cup!" So everyone rotates 1 seat. the entire process from the sipping to the swapping of seats repeats 11 times. The mouse appears out of the teapot, licks the dirty cups until they're clean, then goes back into the pot. The Hatter finally says "So why is a raven like a writing desk?" Alice gets up, leaves the room, then shuts the door. She opens it again and The Hatter says "No room! No room!" and the scene ends. To me, the scene was utterly pointless, in fact possibly one of the most pointless scenes in cinema. There are no references to this scene later in the movie either. Not only that, every part in Alice in Wonderland had a wonderful part in logic or moral. Many of the movies just portray it as "this is what happened." On a side note, I only know of 1 who has done this, but who has read "Through the Looking Glass WARS?" I have a feeling that Tim Burton's adaptation will be based on this book, although I have yet to read it myself. ---------- @JessieLynn: Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum were "Through the Looking Glass" characters. Their little tale about the walrus and the carpenter was in the book as well. I guess Disney sort of collaborated whatever they wanted to. |
I have read the book, it was good. I have seen the movie, I love the movie! I am really excited about the new movie as well. But I also am a little afraid that they are going to make it revolve around the mad hatter. I am excited to see Anne Hathaway in this movie though. I love her! Though when I first saw the trailer I thought Alice was going to be one of the olsen twins...LOL then I took a second look...and saw she wasn't!

So why were they in the first movie?
This Alice in Wonderland takes place many years after her first adventure and many years after through the looking glass. It's not about the books at all. |
I'm soo excited! I have seen the old Disney movie but that's it.

Not sure if anyone answered this because I haven't read the thread, but they are there because the Disney cartoon movie is their take on both books - it's a mixture of what was appropriate for small children and so they used bits and pieces from the books to create an overall child-friendly easily-understood movie~ There was never meant to be a sequel of any sort :3 Quote:

If you mean about the Tim Burton film, I'm not all that worried lol I'm sure it'll be a smashing it :3 Quote:
I think it's a glorious take and a fresh idea that will be truly magnificent and fun to watch. Speaking of Alice in Wonderland, I just saw a play called Looking Glass Alice and it was THE MOST AMAZING and ENCHANTING production I have EVER seen in my ENTIRE life. I couldn't stop laughing for most of it - it was so enjoyable and I sat right on the stage and was interacted with! The Mad Hatter sat upon my lap, said that I was like a vibrating chair with all the giggling I was doing, then the March Hare said "Don't let the pearls fool you everyone! She's pretty handy!" It was soooo amazing~ And he said this because I was wearing a strand of pearls around my neck and my hands were at the Mad Hatter's waist but on his back - everyone thought they were on his butt, but I SWEAR they weren't!!! It was so much fun - I'd go again if I ever had the chance :3 |
Very excited for this movie. It looks surprisingly good, and when I heard it was Tim Burton, I knew why. That guy never fails to deliver.
|
Oh my gosh, I feel the same way as you! :D

I'm so excieted for it. I've read everything to do with Alice in Wonderland over the years, and the new movie just looks brilliant! I love dark twists on well loved stories^.^ Tim Burton is the master of the creepy and the suspensful! I so can't wait!!! ^.^ I love that the Chesire Cat is black and blue this time, and the shivers you get everytime you see the Mad Hatter. And Alice kicking butt! YOSH! This will be amazing, if only the stupid previews would stop teasing me!

I have not read the book or seen the movie but I am so exicted I am going to the midnight permire tonight with my brother and him GirlFriend should be funfun!
|
I'm seeing it tonight! I'm really excited.
|
I've only seen the old movie. I haven't read the books yet, though I probably should. I'm going to see the Tim Burton film tomorrow with my boyfriend. |
The Tim Burton movie looks like it is going to be a sequel to the books. Because Alice is an adult and at the beginning she is getting married and then runs off to wonderland. Then the characters in wonderland say, "Alice, you're back!"

More a film loosely based on the characters of the books. |
I always thought alice and wonderland was about a girl on a drug trip. The new movie by tim burton doesn't really exude acid trip xD More like 'action-y, war' type flick...which doesn't impress me, at least from what I see in the previews. The character designs are pretty nifty though, I especially am fond of the Red Queen look they came up with.
And I think Johnny would make an interesting mad hatter as well. |
Can't wait to see this! although, the cheshire cat has always freaked me out since i was a little kid. :(
|
Have you ever read the book, or books?
No i must get my hands on a copy though. Have you seen the old movie? Yes Complaints? Well i haven't read the book so i honestly have nothing to compare it too. Seemed like any other disney movie ... Rather trippy and scary for a little kid though lol. Things you're worried about? I honestly went in there, waiting to be enchanted. I had no expectations or worries. Are you excited? I was. But i've seen it now so the excitement has worn off xD. Great movie, i loved the role of the mad hatter played by johnny deep. Yes he took on more of a role then the original movie, but it gave the movie a certain quality. Absolutely delighted at how it turned out - Was nothing like the original, i really liked this version. Can't wait to get it on dvd :) And just for those comments i've kinda read over regarding Alice's age. This version, portrays Alice "returning" to wonderland. |

Sorry, it bothers me when people say things like that. :( Keep in mind that Alice was a real little girl! I think Mr Dodgson would be rather disturbed to hear people talk about his books in such a way. Although having said that, I'm feeling less and less convinced that I'll like this movie... apparantly it's more style than substance, and it isn't at all true to the characters or feeling/tone of the books. I am sad. :( |
I just saw the movie and just please let me say
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! IT WAS AMAZING! even though there were a few people i probubly would have loved to see back... but hey it was AMAZING! |
i've read the book but i havent seen any alice in the wonderland movie though so.. am excited about tim burton's version of alice in wonderland
|
I'm actually pretty angry about this now, reading reviews from sensible people confirm all my fears about this movie. :( I don't think I even want to watch it now, it sounds awful, and I think you will be disappointed JessieLynn as a fan of the books, if you read this review here I think you'll get what I mean;
Alice in Wonderland reviewed: Don't follow Tim Burton down this rabbit hole. - By Dana Stevens - Slate Magazine Although I suppose I could see how people who would like that other Disney movie would like this one. :stare: But for those who've read the book, it's sounding pretty dire, I think Disney's ruined Alice again. And I had such high hopes for this, I mean, STEPHEN FRY is the Cheshire Cat! :o |
It wasn't that bad, i thought it was great. But that's probably because i enjoy kids movies & adore johnny deep. Don't believe everything you read lol. Go see it and judge for yourself or, if you really feel it's going to be that bad. Wait for it to come out on dvd.

That was actually going to be my original plan, to rent it when it's on DVD, but I don't even know if I'll have the heart to do that now. Maybe in a few years. While I appreciate the advice, I'd rather make my own decision on this one. Edit: Although, to be fair, I probably did word my previous post a little too harshly, it's jsut been upsetting me a little lately and I suppose it slipped out when I was lax for a moment. :XD I shall endeavor to maintain my stiff upper lip more thoroughly! |
