Movies and Viewer Ages

Have you ever wanted to go see a movie in the theater but decided against going because it is a kids movie? Or have you noticed that with others?

I know I have. I love Disney movies and there have been movies I would love to see but always end up thinking "I don't want to be the only person, other then parents, who can legally drink."

Or have you seen the exact opposite? Go into a kids movie and only see adults?
When "Princess and the Frog" came out me and my mom went and saw it. We expected the theater to be full of kids but when we walked in, as the movie starts, I noticed that the youngest person was at least 13 years old and she was the only one. Everyone else looked at least 16. There were several adults over the age of 40 and even two elderly couples.

And here with Toy Story 3 out I really want to go see it. And instead of thinking "Yay they came out with another one" all I can think is "I wonder if my nephews would sit still long enough to watch the movie?"

Your thoughts?

So has this happened to you?

Why do you think this happens?

And more importantly, should I go see Toy Story 3? ^_-

I'd say, go see Toy Story 3, definitely. While a lot of kids are going, a LOT of adults are, too. Reason being that everyone that was a kid when the first came out is going to see the third because they remember being a kid and now they're also adults and seeing Andy off to college before they themselves head out or after they've been through it. It's a great movie, and I think it's because it was made to appeal to the kids who were in the theaters when the original Toy Story came out and not to the kids who were in the theaters when the the first Transformers came out.

Of course, I never really take into consideration the target audience of the movie. I love kids movies, honestly. Well...at least the decent ones. There are some I would never go see for more than $2 at the theater that gets the movies months late ($2 Tuesday, yay!), and some I'd even wait to see on TV. XD But especially with some of the Disney and Pixar movies, I totally go to the theaters for those. Which is nice, 'cause a lot of the time, the creators try to throw in a few treat gags for the older audiences. ;)

Yeah, there are a lot of movies that I watch when they come out on DVD mainly because I don't want to spend $7 to see them.

Toy Story 3 has covered a wide time span so it probably will bring in more people.

Something else I have noticed when going to a kids movie is while you might see a few females over the age of 16 without kids I have never seen a male of the same age alone. Is it less acceptable for guys to go see kids movies or do they just not want to see them?

HappyStarr 06-22-2010 11:49 PM

I think it's generally an unacceptable idea in "man law" or whatever. My guys friends will totally all go with us girls in a group to kids movies, but I don't know how many of them would ever go alone. ..Maybe one, if he didn't bring his girlfriend along, which I doubt 'cause she likes kid movies about as much as I do. XD

I feel like guys only really go to the movies that are specifically marketed to them, and then end up complaining about how lousy they were for such and such a reason. Yet, if they go see a movie with more story intact and better characters, they end up complaining about how there wasn't even fighting and killing and such. And no guy I've met will venture to a chick flick alone, even if it looks more promising than any other movie out.

Lilith W 06-22-2010 11:55 PM

I suppose that is true.
I have noticed guys in groups with others but I always kind of got the idea that they were dragged along by girlfriends.

HappyStarr 06-23-2010 12:13 AM

Eh, perhaps sometimes. Most of the people I know seem to be outside the norm..but...sometimes it's the guys that get the group together. XD

I just wish that people didn't intentionally make their movies bad just because of the rating. We've ended up with a lot of really lousy movies because of that. It's like,

G: Oh, it's not even worth seeing unless your kid's 2. Better not put any effort into it, 'cause we'll lose all our money.
PG: Meh. It's a kid's movie. It could be good, but we'd rather spend our money elsewhere.
PG-13: We're trying to make it a cool movie, because teenagers like things that are cool. What are the latest trends? Let's put them ALL in there. Oh, no! That one's rated R. Take it out! ..what? It makes the whole movie a joke? ...TOO BAD! We're replacing it!
R: We have to make sure that no parent in their right mind would let their kid see this. Let's add 3 sex scenes one step below porno, and 4 more almost sex scenes. And make the blood extra bloody and make sure it spurts out of even the most minor injuries.

Maybe if they just made their movie however they're gonna make it, they'd get a much better turnout. And if it's really good, but still PG, all the better, 'cause then it'll be available to a wider audience. T_T

I kind of agree with that.

Do you know what Toy Story 3 is rated?
I've noticed that G movies are dying out. PG is the new G.

lol, never mind a commercial just popped on and Toy Story is rated G
but still I have seen kids movies that were rated PG for no reason I can find

HappyStarr 06-23-2010 12:45 AM

Exactly. Nobody would expect Toy Story to be rated G. Even kids don't normally go to G rated movies anymore, because they expect it to be on par with Teletubbies.

Lilith W 06-23-2010 12:54 AM

Well anymore I don't even understand why one thing is rated G and another PG.
I watched one G movie and it had a cuss word while the PG had two people kissing. You would think the cuss word would rate higher then a kiss.

The sad thing is that I probably end up watching more movies rated PG-13 and under then my sister who is 12.
And I know I own more then her.

Sho-Shonojo 06-23-2010 01:13 PM

I usually don't have to worry about this, because usually if I want to go see a kid's movie, my little sister will want to see it too. That and I'm a self-acclaimed Pixar fangirl and would go to see any of their movies without hesitation. Age doesn't matter, Pixar usually sticks in some jokes that only adults would get anyway.

Lilith W 06-23-2010 04:47 PM

I've noticed that Disney and Pixar movies tend to have an adult following too.
While other companies it isn't as accepted to go to the movies to see their movies.

Codette 06-23-2010 07:22 PM

I say meh. If it looks cool in the previews I go no matter the rating... unless I can't get in (which will only last 28 days ^.^) then I get my older brother to go with me, or his gf, or both, and they'll get me in ^.^

Indeed. And maybe that's just what that company wants, I dunno. I'm still hoping for Dreamworks to make another decent movie. The Shrek thing they've got going is kinda...eh. I liked the first one, and the second was alright...but after that I said no more. I haven't seen How to Train Your Dragon yet, but being a total dragon fangirl, I'm definitely going to eventually. It just came out at the worst time for me: unemployed and finals week. XD They really kinda went downhill after Spirit, though. T_T I wish more people remembered that movie. It's what got me into animation. haha

Lilith W 06-23-2010 07:40 PM

I love Spirit.
It is sadly under appreciated.
