Doctor Who Series Five: Are YOU in love yet?

I've got to admit, I'm not one of those super cool oldschool Doctor Who fans who've been watching since the first incarnations of the Doctor. Heck, I even missed out on the 9/Rose VS 10/Rose flamewars. To my shame, I didn't start watching until this season.

Disgraceful, no? Why yes, yes it is. But I've got to say, for a jumping off point, I don't think I could have chosen a better Doctor.

Now that this year's season is at its end (at least in the UK) I want to see what other fans have to say about the plot twists, the sexy new companion(s) River Song, and the ominous foreshadowing for next season.

So tell me, what do YOU love about Eleventy?

The_Ambassador 07-02-2010 12:20 PM

I just started watching with the new Matt Smith incarnation but thanks to reruns I have also seen quite a few of the David Tennant episodes. I didn't know anything about the show really before The Eleventh Hour but now I can't get enough of it. It is my new favorite show on television. I'm in the USA so I'm only up to the Vincent van Gogh episode.

That episode broke my heart. I think it's the only time I've openly wept while watching a TV series.

Yeah, me too! After it was over I got on the computer and listened to that Starry Starry Night song (I think its actually called Vincent) and almost cried. I've always loved van Gogh's paintings so that episode was special for me.

I know, right? I mean, you KNOW how the episode has to end, but you just keep hoping that maybe just this once history can change. But it was so beautiful, and... Aw man, I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking about it.

so you guys watched the vincent episode to? It took me forever just to watch it. Thats only because I was busy but it was still good. What I liked about that episode was that he got to see his that his work was recognized.

I've seen the whole series through, but I'm a terrible person who abuses the power of the internet to watch foreign shows as soon as they air. <3 That scene, where Amy and the Doctor bring him to the museum... most moving piece of TV EVER.

lonelyotaku 07-03-2010 02:01 AM

yes it is and the way that guy was complimenting him was the best, Vincent even started crying but it was a good cry three cheers for the doctor. what website did u go to for all the episodes?

Raven Of The Woods 07-03-2010 02:28 AM

i only ever watched the David Tennant ones... but he made me fall in love with the doctor... at least the way he portrayed him... the episode were he makes himself human always gets to me when he has to choose wether to be human or go back to being the doctor...

lonelyotaku 07-03-2010 02:41 AM

my first doctor was Christopher Eccleston it was to bad he had to change in the tenth doctor who was really good to.

Janenju 07-03-2010 02:46 AM

I've seen a few episodes with Tennant... I have no problem with him as the Doctor, I just don't dig the writer for some of those episodes. Example, the Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords episodes with The Master... There was so much awesome Master/Doctor foeyay, and then the Doctor suddenly turns into a house elf. And if that wasn't enough, later he becomes Tinkerbell Jesus. I'm sorry, but... that was just too much narm for me.

Eccleston, on the other hand, I absolutely love, but I can't stand Rose. She... she's such an entitlement whore.

lonelyotaku 07-03-2010 03:04 AM

I disagree I liked Rose, and in the sound of drums Martha did do a good job of saving him. I'm glad you liked christopher eccleston he was wonderful the best I ever seen and he was really brilliant.

I've only been watching Doctor Who for a couple of months now, but I've retroactively watched every episode and special since the 2005 reboot up to "Vincent and The Doctor" since I'm American and refuse to watch the episodes until they're released, on principal. After three seasons with Tennant being as wonderful as he is, I'll admit that I was worried about Smith filling his sneakers. Now as series five comes to a close, my fears have been assuaged. Smith is a different type of Doctor than Tennant was, so I don't feel fair in comparing the two, but I can easily say that Smith is doing a fantastic job. He really shows the quirkiness and unbreakable childish spirit of the Doctor while still maintaining the seriousness of the love and devotion the Doctor has towards his companions, the human race, and life in general. He doesn't seem to have the weight of the world on his shoulders as Tennant so often did, but I don't feel that this betrays the nature of the Doctor. Rather, Smith is placing more emphasis on the Doctor's oddities and compassion. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the series and look forward to seeing more from Smith.
On a side note, I haven't heard anything about it, but I'm hoping Jenny makes a reappearance sometime in the future. I think it's fairly likely because Stephen Moffat was the one responsible for the open-ended nature of "The Doctor's Daughter".

lonelyotaku 07-03-2010 04:58 AM

I agree he does catch that boyish charm and thats why everyone likes him. your a true blue doctor who fan.

The_Ambassador 07-03-2010 12:13 PM

@Raven: That is one of my favorite David Tennant episodes that I have seen so far. Really brilliant.

@Lee: A like your analysis of those two. The first time I started watching was with Smith and I immediately fell in love with his character archetype. After going back and watching Tennant episodes though its hard for me to pick a favorite because Smith doesn't have that "weight of the world" seriousness you mentioned. Still they are both great in my opinion.

I kind of liked Rose but I don't know if shes my favorite. Of course I haven't seen that many episodes with her. I'm only a few episodes into Donna as the companion and so far I like her.

General Lee Outrageous 07-03-2010 04:35 PM

I actually wasn't a huge fan of Rose. I mean, she wasn't bad, but I usually found her to be a tad annoying. I liked Martha well enough, but I don't think she was anything exceptional. When Donna first appeared, I absolutely LOATED her bitchy attitude, but as series 4 went on, she directed that ferocity away from her own self-centeredness and towards helping the Doctor, and she really grew on me. As for Amy, I'm not a huge fan of her infatuation with the Doctor, but I really do like how well she understands him. And of course, there's her looks... She's probably my favorite companion so far.

lonelyotaku 07-03-2010 06:27 PM

Did you see the vesuvius one? it was really good, and you might've heard them say theres something on Donnas back but i won't spoil that for you.

pinkgabbercat 07-28-2010 04:50 PM

I really love this season. I watched a few of the David Tennant episodes and I like Matt Smith much more.

lonelyotaku 07-31-2010 07:09 PM
