WIPEOUT!
Somebody else out there must watch Wipeout! It's ridiculously entertaining. There's just something about watching people flail about and fall into mud and water that is awesome.
Clearly, it's based on crazy Japanese game shows with their own insane stunts. Actually, it used to be followed up by the wonderfully wacky "I Survived a Japanese Game Show", which sadly was not continued this year. As if to make up for that, Wipeout now comes on twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So, is anybody else watching? You know what I'd really like to see? I'd like to see the presenters, John, John and Jill run the course. Now that would be entertaining! |
I LOVE this show!!! I truly want to take part of it someday when I (eventually) visit California! This show is just amazingly great!!
|
Sometimes I think I'd like to try it because it look like AMAZING fun. If there were a Wipeout theme park, I'd SO be there!
But on the other hand, some of those wipeouts look really really painful. I'm amazed that people get up from them sometimes or aren't bleeding. I'd still want to jump across the big balls though! :D |
Same here!! I'm pretty sure they'd have a first aid stand standing by when people go through the obstacle course though...
|
Yeah. They'd have to have a doctor standing by on a show like that. Maybe even a dentist. I wonder how many teeth contestants have lost on that show. When they drain the pool do they find them at the bottom?
|
Wipeout cracks me up, I am glad another season was released.
|
I watch it -- it looks so painful and ridiculous at the same time...
|
I know. You wince a lot at some of the more painful looking bumps and falls, and yet it's funny. But I think our sense of humor has always been rather mean. Think about most comedy? It's often about making fun of someone. And like they say in the clip up there, pratfalls are one of the most timeless types of comedy. People just like watching other people fall.
|
I love to watch this show. Some of them are sort of a flop but then other episodes are a total gold mine. I like the variations of the first course, particularly the big balls. A good time.
|
I've only seen the Japanese ones (which I think is called something like Muscle King...), haven't seen Wipeout before, but it certainly looks interesting XD |
I love when they mix up the course. Those obstacles are crazy. And I have to say,t he humor, while cheesy, is still better than the super crappy dubbing (butchering) they do on Most Extreme Challenge. I'd rather watch Takashi's Castle uncut without all the crappy dub work. Ugh.
@Fading - I don't know when they film the show, I imagine sometime in the spring since it shows over the summer, but still contestants to talk about the cold water. And I imagine it only gets worse as the sun goes down, when they film the final challenge. But most shows like this with crazy obstacles are really entertaining. I enjoy watching clips from Japanese shows even though I don't know what the heck is going on most of the time. That said, I don't get their fascination with putting people in HOT water! Then they have them jumping out into ice baths. It seems even more cruel. Cold water I'm ok with, but the hot dunks just seem really mean. |
Whipeout is awesome and they are coming out with Whipeout Canada and I so entered...gunna get hurt to win cash baby
|
Ha I'll be cheering for you Demon, I'm looking forward to watching the Canadian one!
|
yay go me
|
Oooh, Canadian Wipeout! I bet your water will be even colder o.o. I wanna watch!
|
Ouch... it looks painful, and I used to watch it but I don't know if they show it in NZ at the moment.
|
It does look painful, but strangely fun. Until you faceplant or hit something and bend into a human pretzel before you fall x_x
|
ah slow mo replay... where would we be without yous?
the people running the course get up rather quickly, so obviously everything is heavily padded. perhaps they do some stretches before hand. |
The slow mo just makes it better. As do the doodles that the Johns do on the screen.
Since there's so many cuts in the scenes, we can't really know how quickly they get up in reality. But if what they show is accurate, I guess maybe it doesn't hurt as much as it looks like it does. |
This show cracks me and my mom up every time. Some people on there just don't belong... this and Ninja Warrior are two epic shows.
Has anyone seen the episode where the guy tries making a dramatic introduction by taking off his pants to reveal his, erm,... swimsuit but ends up wasting his time, so he doesn't bother taking them off all the way and fails on the first part of the course with his pants around his ankles? Ahh, I love some of the idiots on that show. |
Oh yeah! It always shows around summertime.
Even though it looks painful and some of that stuff should be questioned, I can't help but laugh sometimes... I confess, the big red balls are my favorite obstacles. >< |
yea it really looks painful but its soooo funny and there comes peoples whit strange outfits

I love wipeout (Australia) never knew Australia had so many weird people.
and thethe hosts just make it even more funnier by editing it |
I didn't know there was an Australian version, so I went to watch some on youtube :D There's a UK version too, Total Wipe out. I watched a bit of that. Here are my thoughts (as if anyone cares).
Wipe Out Australia Pretty much an identical clone of the US version down to the music. Two humorous hosts with silly commentary and drawing on the screens. Pretty female interviewer. Though she doesn't have much personality. Wacky cast of characters from across Australia. Qualifiers are more closely followed than the drop outs, there's just highlights of them. I think the first season course is almost identical to the US's version. It's a good solid hilarious version of Wipeout. UK's Total Wipeout Only one host with a rather dry narration of events. A famous presenter of Top Gear, I find him totally boring. Pretty female interviewer. She's more enthusiastic than her Australian counterpart. Wacky cast of characters from across the UK. They spend too much time following every single person in the qualifier! They do more interviews of the contestants after they fail an obstacle, but they also spend more time in general on them. The second qualifier round took so much longer with all the replays following every single player and then a quick interview on top of that. The third round isn't first come first serve. It's run every round with the first across being safe and the last to finish getting eliminated each time, which is odd. Their contestants must be even more exhausted. Then more interviews with finalists. Oh man, it's taken so long to get to this point, I don't even want to watch it to the end it's soooooo boring! More action, less talking and replays with lame narration and little to no humor at all! I guess after all this time invested I should at least watch it to the end, but the UK version just isn't as much fun as the US and Aussie versions. Later on... Ok, I have forged ahead and finished the last bit of Total Wipeout. The first contestant completed the Wipeout Zone course in 3:09! WTF. OMG! The second contestant finished the course with a time of 1 minute and 48 seconds! People are lucky to finish the US Wipeout Zone in under 10 minutes. Hell, some people take longer running the damn qualifier than these guys take on the Wipeout Zone. It's too easy! The last half of that course is laughable! And they let the finalists who go over the time to beat go on to finish the course, making them think they have a chance to win. That's rather cruel. =/ Final Verdict: Total Wipeout really is a total wipeout. It just fails. |
thanks for the info Cookie ^_^
On US, I am glad that more enthusiastic and aggressive women are signing up. Some even won over men, which is pretty awesome, since naturally men are just stronger than women by default. The new 2010 Wipeout Zone is insane! But it is indeed passable, as the builders of the obstacles actually run through it themselves. |
