La Chapelle Review: Devil
Hello again! Last night a group of friends and I decided to watch the new horror flick: Devil, thought up by M.Night Shymala (FEAR!) and Directed by John Erick Dowdle. Let's begin. For one thing, even the words "thought up by" and "M. Night" in the same sentence worries me. Let's get this straight people, for one, I have NEVER thought he made one good flick. Hate The Happening, Lady in the Water, the Village, even his older works SUCKED. But that's just my opinion. I don't think he's a good director, and I don't think he should be in this business, even TOUCHING a movie. So I came into the theater expecting to either enjoy it, walk out angry, or have to live through another one of his "Twists" The thing is, I kinda enjoyed it. Maybe it's cause it wasn't directed by him. Now, usually when my friends and I go to a screening a girl friend of mine and I are able to distinguish who the bad guy is, what the motive for said occurrence is, what happens, why, who dies, and what the ending will be. This is not because we're good, it is because there has been very little in movie creativity since the 70's. Pretty much everything is laid out before you. This did not happen during this movie. We have a group of different people, all having done something wrong during their lives now trapped inside an elevator, where is seems one individual is what we perceive as "the devil". Now, as lights are flashing, hell is breaking lose, people around them are dying and suspicion is going on in the air we have another group, the security guards, and one detective forced to watch, attempting to save these people. One seems to know exactly what this creature is, and we start to learn the detective might be involved more than we suspected. As all this is going on we are made to guess which person is the big bad man and deal with flashing strobe lights. This movie made me jump, a lot. It has pop-out horror, which I HATE! But in this, it wasn't so bad. Sadly most of the action takes place in the dark. You are just made to listen to what's happening as each character dies, and when the lights come back you see what remains of them. Every so often a scary face will pop out of a dark sinister noise, but it's really just a lot of suspense. Mind you, they did it well in this. Being in an enclosed space with a group of people you don't know, hanging well over 23 stories in the air while one of you might be the killer is a scary thing. Add the piling up of corpses and you have something that would easily make me wet myself. Mind you, some of these deaths are crazy where you will want to yell at the characters "the guy beside you couldn't have done it, it must be an evil force, there is no physical way!" but we have to remember, humans don't rationalize like that in these kinds of situations. Plus, who would suspect a "devil" is amongst them doing these things. Not I for one. I really have very little faults with this movie. You like horror, you enjoy suspense, and you want to have fun with a group of friends, so check this out. It's not terrifying by any means, but it is a bit nerve wracking. Spend the few bucks and take your girls out guys. Girls, enjoy a fun evening with your friends and make an excuse to cling onto the dude beside you that you've been crushing on for ages. All in all, I'll give it a B+ Enjoy them elevators folks. |
