W. (2008)

I actually didn't like this too much. I went into the theatre hoping for one of two things:

1.) I wanted to see G.W.B. as a protagonist/semi-protagonist. I absolutely loathe his policies, and politics have been rough for the past couple of months, so I was hoping for something that would help me to empathize more with the person who I cannot account for as a leader.
2.) If one couldn't be fulfilled, I was hoping that the movie would at least be effective in poking fun at the President. Like I said, rough politics lately... I wanted to be entertained.

I was disappointed, however. First, the cinematography of the film wasn't exactly on for me. The cameraman kept insisting on tight shots of the actors' faces for pretty much the entire time. Moreover, in transitioning from uncomfortably tight shot to uncomfortably tight shot, the cameraman at one point had a lot of the up-and-down shakes. I think it was meant to be stylistic, but that choice fell flat. In addition, the tight shots were almost always from a lower angle, which I guess was intended to portray the characters as bigger-than-life? Had they been less indiscriminate with the use of these techniques, maybe it might have amounted to something, but overall this mode of cinematography just didn't do it for me. Finally, when the cameramen did pan out to show the whole body of a scene, it was only for the ability to show some heavy-handed attempts at symbolism.

I mean, the corn? Honestly! The halo, I get it, excess excess excess. There was no subtlety to any of those attempts at symbolic criticism, though, so it didn't work for me. It came across as tacky.

The movie was fun enough to watch in a whimsical way. The portrayal of Dick Cheney was all up in the Darth Vader comparisons. The extent of that villanization was entertaining-- they couldn't have made it much more blunt if they'd CG-ed red lasers coming out of the VP's eyes.

Still, the entire film was so clumsily over-the-top that it would have been better, for me, if they'd abandoned attempts at impartiality and made the film Rocky Horror esque. Had the director not taken his venture so seriously, I could have had a wonderful time cheering for Laura and Powell while throwing popcorn at Rumsfeld.

The actors, though, handled their roles well. (For the most part-- I didn't like the woman who portrayed Rice.) I simply think that the film was somewhat misdirected. The only clear angle that the director had was the portrayal of the father-son relationship, and I have difficulty believing that said storyline could have been at all based on the real emotions of those involved. Mainly 'cause I don't think those persons would have assented to interviewing about the history included.

The movie didn't really come to any coherent or fulfilling conclusion. Overall, disappointing. I had higher expectations from what I'd seen advertised.

6/10

Eagle Eye. I give it a 8.5/10. I saw it with some friends (seven teenage girls going to see an action flick is not the most common thing in the world, but it was fun) and we all thought it was really awesome. My brother and dad saw it before us,and they said it was just okay, their reasoning being that it wasn't very believeable. It wasn't, but you know what? I thought it was very creative indeed, and so did all my friends. But we're all avid fans of fantasy books, so to us, a hyper-intelligent computer is hardly the most outlandish thing in the world.

There were some parts that made NO SENSE to me. For instance they injected themselves with that stuff to lower their heartrate so they wouldn't suffocate, were in a crate on a cargo plane for several hours, and they came out sprinting? No. That does not work. And, this is a spoiler, so I'll type in in white. Highlight it to read. SPOILER: He got shot like, four times by people protecting the president and did not die!? What!? No! He would be so very dead! And I didn't like how they ended up together at the end. That was just stupid to me.

However, the acting was amazing. The whole intricate plot was very well laid-out and I loved how it all tied in together!

I'd reccomend this to anyone who likes action flicks and doesn't mind a slight touch of sci-fi, or just likes complex and interesting movies in general.

Dan in Real Life

4.5/5

It was good. I liked the family dynamic. A good bit of it did seem realistic. It wasn't one of those movies about a family get together that stuff goes on that would never really happen in real life. Plus, Dane Cook was in it, and he's gorgeous. I loved every time he sang.

+++

Dark Prince: The True Story of Dracula

5/5

I loved it. It's normally not something I'd really be into. It was really good, though. I liked the story. The story actually made me feel kind of sympathetic to Vlad. Yes, he killed a lot of people which is unforgivable. But he'd had a hard life considering people wanted him murdered since his birth because prophets said he would be the antichrist. I liked how he was with his wife. He really loved her, tried to shield her from the bloody part of his life. I liked how their part of the story ended.

I went out to see Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

It was a cute and fun movie, although I can say nothing for the accuracy in translation from book to movie. I'd give it about an 8/10 since it's really more of a fluff-love movie than anything else, albeit a very funny one.

I just watched Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. It was a great movie. It was so much better then I thought it was going to be. Michael Cera is great, as always. It was an adorable movie, it makes me forget my woes. <3

I adore it. I give it a 8.5/10 and that's damn good for me.

I recommend watching it with friends, family and loved ones.

Lars and the Real Girl. I loved the direction that they decided to take the movie in, although my mom found it a bit boring and slow. The thing is, it's one of those "quiet chuckle" movies, not one of those "laugh out loud" ones. It actually made me cry a bit, too.

Yes, with the idea of the plotline behind it, it could've been one of those raunchy rated "R" comedies that pop up in theatres, but instead they take a more serious-yet-quirky outlook on the subject (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say what the general plotline is but the movie itself isn't really raunchy at all). Overall, I give it 4.5/5 stars on a personal level, and a 3.7/5 on a more general level (because not everyone likes the quiet humor).

Fugitive Pieces It was amazing! Almost as well done as the book, I really wish that they would have focused on Ben's story more...8/10.

I saw Max Payne, I never played the game and from the trailer I was expecting some supernatural stuff. So, it was a huge let down. For me, I give it a 4 out of 10.

I liked it very much, it told and awesome story and the acting was also very good.
It made me want to go pick up the book.
Not to fast paced, and has a couple of good twist.

In theater, The Dark Knight (?).

I would give it a 7. I did not find it that crazy, but I know several people really like it.

On TV, it would be HSM2.

Loved it. I would give it a 9.

Redline

3/5

It was an OK movie. I got a little bored with it, though. I'm generally really into racing car/motorcycle type movies. So, I was a little disappointed with it. Some of the special effects were nice, though. In all, the movie wasn't bad but not really something I'll watch again.

Dirty Dancing

5/5

It's a classic. I've never met many people who haven't seen it. For a movie to be as popular as it is for this long, it has to be good. The acting is good enough. I like the music. I like the dancing. There's not much to dislike about it. It's great. I can't count the number of times I've seen it.

The Beverly Hillbillies

4/5

It's a funny movie. Some of the acting isn't great, but it's fairly easily overlooked. It's not something I can watch over and over without getting tired of it, though.

+++

Feel the Noise

2/5

The acting was fine. The story, though... It just drug on and on. There wasn't a real climax to the movie that I could discern. If I had had any expectations, I probably would have been disappointed.

Little Man

4.5/5

It's a funny movie. I love it.

Center Stage: Turn It Up

4/5

I love ballet movies. I don't know why. This was a good one. I don't know if I like it better than the first one. I think the first one had more humor. This was good, though.

...I've watched a lot of movies today.

The last movie I watched was "Citizen Kane." It's supposed to be the Greatest Movie of All Time and while I agree that it was amazing, I wouldn't say it's the best movie ever made. the cinematography was absolutely fantastic but the plot didn't suit my fancy and I didn't find myself relating to most of the characters. I felt there could have been more character development. It was very good, but not brilliant. I give it a 9 out of 10 but I'm sure it's just me and I don't really get it.

The Brothers Grimm

I remember really wanting to see this movie when it first came out, so I was pretty happy to see that my grandpa had it and decided to watch it.
To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. While details were new and original, the overall thing was pretty cliche.
I get that the whole thing was supposed to be a little like a fairy tale, but you can do it with some originality.
Not only that, it was a little hard to follow. Either I kept blacking out for a few minutes at a time, or you frequently had no clue what was going on. Things were given very little explanation. I still can't figure out why the French guy suddenly liked them at the end after he hated them for most of the movie.
And the entire thing with Angelica just made me want to throw up a little bit. And left me a little confused. Only one of the brothers loved her, but at the end of the movie it left you completely hanging as to whether they might try being together or not, and made it seem like she loved the other brother. Which didn't, to me, seem to fit the "and then they all lived happily ever after" that appeared on the screen right afterwards.

Overall, it seemed like a great idea that got mutated when trying to make it more mainstream and widely appealing (Take the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie for example. That was horrible).

I'll give it a 6/10
