Pan's Labyrinth - Movie

I just loved this movie, so I had to make a forum for it.

I saw it about two weeks ago, and the movie itself is about 2 hours long. Everything is in Spanish with English subtitles. So, that's the basic info if you haven't seen it yet.

Now, I just LOVED the story. Even though the story line was extremely basic, like a normal fairy tale, the movie was still packed full of action, special effects, and beautiful art to make this one of the most thrilling movies I've ever seen.

So fans viewers, or wannabe viewers come, discuss your favorite aspects of the movie. For spoiler purposes though, try to warn us about any spoilers just in case.

So, I have to say that this was definantly the best action/fantasy movie I've ever seen. It had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire movie. I've also heard that most of the things done in it were made with prosthetics, making it all the more impressive.

Now I can't post or upload any images of my own, and I don't want to direct link, so if anyone would like to upload and post images from the movie here, than go ahead.

Have fun.

I've been trying to get everyone I know to see it - I saw it in december, and thought it was truly awesome.

The music is just... Wonderful.
While I agree that the scenario is basic - it is a fairy tale, isn't it? - the way it is dealt with is brilliant. The images, the music, the atmosphere... All of it was breathtaking.

i watched this a while back
i posted about it in the last movie you ever saw thread. quoting myself.

Here's what I wrote:

Pan's Labyrinth.

Watched it yesterday. Simply amazing.
9.9 rating, since I don't really believe in 10's. Always room for improvement, I say.

But. It blew my mind, really. Left me breathless.

You should deff. get someone to watch it with you...
It's a roller coaster ride of intense emotions and stuff. I was groping my friends' knees at certain parts, xDDD.
It's really good. In my opinion. I mean...seriously.
The story was really...just not expected at some points, and the special effects are AMAZING, the moral is great, the actors did really well, and the choreography is BEAUTIFUL. It's not like anything I've ever seen. There's just so much in it. I absolutely recommend the film. I'm not Spanish or Hispanic, and I know many people that are not and would be reluctant to go see it because of subtitles, but it is worth it if you appreciate a beautifully made fantastical movie.
The settings are amazing, and it's as if they spent hours on EVERY detail.

Yeah. I'm very passionate about movies and film making, so...you can probably tell. I really really am happy I watched it. 5 times worth the money I paid. Not what I was expecting, but it the best way possible.

I hope you like it as much as I did...it breaks my heart when people think badly of movies I think are amazing. >.<

I'm a real wimp when it comes to movies. Unless it's the kind of scary that's campy, like stupid blood and gore films, I pretty much flip out. I'm afraid of scary music, things that jump out, and the possibility of things jumping out.

One of my good friends said she loved it, but that I would probably cry if I watched it. I had nightmares for a week after watching the fourth (is that the latest one?) Harry Potter movie. That's pretty pathetic.

Maybe when it comes out on video I'll watch it in a lighted room with a bunch of people to cling to.

`Riku 02-13-2007 04:45 PM

lol.
aww...
-pat pat-

the fourth HP movie, eh?
that was pretty sad, yep...but...nothing really compared to pan's labyrinth. xD

Aurilia 02-13-2007 05:23 PM

I watched Pan's Labyrinth a few days ago and whan I came out of the theatre I was traumatised.

I don't think I've ever seen so much blood, gore, torture scenes etc etc in one movie. I even had to avert my eyes at certain parts (sawing off the guy's leg. torture of the stutterer, bloody-smeary-deadly childbirth)
It was very well made, that I have to say though.

But compared to this one, watching "From Hell" feels like watching Teletubbies. Had I seen this as a child, I would have had nightmares for the rest of my life.

The makers of Pans Labyrinth have accomplished what most moviemakers have failed at lately: the movie will be stuck with you for at least a few days, it was so sad and intense.

The only critique that I'd have is that some things did not need to be so extremely graphic...

Too bad the movie is being misrepresented as an elf-fairytale full of magic, when in fact it's actually an anti-war movie, showing all the cruelties of a depressed post-war time (Spanish Civil war) and the cruelty of dictatorship.

`Riku 02-13-2007 05:36 PM

i agree, aurilia, about the previews falsely advertising the movie. but in a way, it's not too false. it is just a dark fairy tale with deep connections to reality. >.<

My friend saw it and really enjoyed it. I want to but I don't think I'll be able to have to to go and see it. Maybe I'll rent it later...

  • My lover and I really wanted to see this movie. It looked incredible, beautiful, and just plain great. D:

Sadly to say, we missed it in theaters. Or we just can't seem to find any theater here that plays it at a good time of day. It's all at night, and neither of us can go so far at night without being back after midnight or later. v_v

Kongouseki 03-14-2007 03:09 AM

my friends keep telling me it's an awesome movie. i'll need to get it sometime.

Sizzla 03-14-2007 03:05 PM

This was an amazing movie. I'm glad it won some Oscars, because it totally deserved to. The special effects and costuming were probably my favorite parts. :D

Everyone should see it...Unless violence makes you squeamish...

sychobunny 03-14-2007 07:19 PM

I loved this movie. I love the colors they used to set moods, and the angles. I also happen to have a long running fae fetish going for me.
Even though it is an anti-war movie, I think of it as more of a fairytale. The reason for this is that fairy tales are usually put in a setting of when they were created. There is usually a comment, even though it may not be obvious, on the current society. This movie’s non magical elements are more about daily life in the setting, which is the Spanish inquisition.
I did find it gory, but I liked it because I have friends that ate squeamish, and I got to make fun of them.
When he was stitching his mouth- we all (including the nursing major) found it interesting that he started in the corner of his natural mouth- but then I pointed out that he might have been worried about aligning it properly…
Very pretty movie.

Moocat 03-15-2007 03:17 AM

That movie was so amazing.

At some parts, my mom screamed. xD I had to smack her and tell her to shut up. The movie was just so...Magical, in such a dark sense of the word. And all of that was just so deep and powerful.

It really made you think.

ToriKat 03-15-2007 05:10 AM

I'm going to have to say that this was a really great movie.

I have an attention span of a bug, but while watching Pan's Labyrinth, I didn't look away, fidget from boredom, or walk around. The artistic aspects of the movie was just wonderful! And the actors were really good. In comparison, the actors from The Chronicles of Narnia made me roll my eyes. But the little girl was just perfect.

I'm SO glad the movie wasn't dubbed. I actually watch a lot of American movies subtitled just so I can catch all of the dialogue (again, with the attention span thing XP).

Gore wise, it wasn't that bad as I had expected since everywhere I read said Vidal was sadistic and cruel. Saving Private Ryan and Taeguki got me squeamish.

The one scene that will give me nightmares is without doubt the second task. I HATE long hallways, so that was mark number one. Then that...creature thing...with the eyes in his hands...was mark number two. Guh...XD

Nevertheless, I'd recommend this to everyone who would want to see something of quality instead of the junk Hollywood's been cranking out. It won me over artistically and storywise. :D

^^ He's called the Pale Man.

xD When I saw him, I started to sink slowly into my seat until I was practically on the floor. He creeped me out so bad. When my cousin saw the movie, she said she had done the same thing, too.

kafine 03-16-2007 04:43 PM

It is awesome :D

I'm going to ask for the dvd for my birthday!

We were surprised by the amount of violence in it, but it was nothing we couldn't handle.

Enniel 03-17-2007 05:40 PM

i heard it was good, but a little scary!! XD

Mei 03-17-2007 06:47 PM

OMFG THE MOVIE IS COMPLETELY IN SPANISH???? With English subtitles?? I think I'm in heaven. XD

I have GOT to see this movie!

ProdigyBombay 03-19-2007 07:45 AM

Gah, this was definitely one of the most amazing movies EVER. I was really sad that it didn't win Best Foreign Movie at the Oscars. TTwTT

One thing I thought that was amazing was that the faun and that monster w/ the eyeballs in his hands were actually people in COSTUMES...not cgi!!! X0

Alegretto 03-19-2007 05:23 PM

The Faun and the Pale man were the same actor. I thought it was awesome that there was so little CGI in the movie. People rely on it way too much these days.

Loved loved LOVED the movie, though. Captain Vidal was the evilest and sickest bastard I've seen in a movie since seeing Kakihara in Ichi the Killer. He was AWESOME. Best villain ever. Yet while he was such a monster, Vidal still felt human. He was so well developed, not just one of those boring generic "rawr. I is evil." type of villains.

But then again, all the characters were stunningly developed, and the actors only made them more amazing. The casting couldn't have been better done, in my opinion.

now I wanna see it again. Dx

siaasgn 03-21-2007 05:37 PM

I remember when I saw it almost the entire theater was silent right after it ended - we were all in shock I guess.

It was so real, and I absolutely hated the captain - it was amazing he was developed so well that I could hate him!! I also wanted to cry for the stutterer - it was so cruel what happened to him.

Right after the movie someone asked me what I thought - I told them I needed to digest it a little bit more - I was still too disturbed to give an opinion.

all in all it was a great movie that really sticks with you.

Jack 03-21-2007 07:20 PM

It was a good movie. Hell, an excellent movie with wonderful cinematography. However, it is not what I had gone to see.

When I hear something like "Pan's Labyrinth", I expect a shitload of fantasy and mythology. There were really only four major scenes of fantasy, and the other 80% of the movie was a war story. The only thing that the fantasy bits did for the movie was raise the question of whether they actually happened or if the girl imagined them.

Either way, I absolutely LOVED Pan's character design. The costume was genius.
