I think one surefire way to be sure a sequal with suck is if it's to a Disney movie
DX they are just so awful. |
It really depends, I guess, but most of the time sequels are horrible. I notice it a lot in Disney movies, only about two or three sequels will turn up good and everything else is awful. Mainly because the story isn't as fresh as the original, so it's not the same as being introduced to new characters.

i can never get enough of the pirate movies. the sequels are tying everything in together for me. even though i still enjoyed the first movie the best.
shrek.. the original will always be my favorite but i have to admit the last one was freaking awesome. my whole family and i almost died laughing in theaters. the second one.. bleh. bambi.. i've only ever seen the original but i would like to see what they did to the second. chances are the first i will still favor.. even though i didn't like it all that much. jaws.. is one movie i will never enjoy watching them. cinderella.. alright i enjoyed these movies simply because the third one tied everything together. the second answered some things from the first and the last one ended all my questions that i had when i was little for the first. spiderman.. these movies made me happy and angry at the same time. first of all, sandman isn't in any of the spiderman comics and you see more of the black spidey than you do of the actual venom. plus carnage isn't in it when during this time venom had a son named carnage and venom turned good wanting to kill his son. anyways, even the second movie pissed me off a little because the green goblin was not supposed to die. the gases wore off in the original movie/comics and the guy forgot everything. other than that i loved everything about these movies purely just to watch. a nightmare on elm street is a good example. i always thought there was just one then in the first one he came back! again and again the creator just found weird ways to bring him back and kill more people. his mother even helps some of the people to kill him because she thinks it's her fault for bearing a monster. the movie freddy's dead was supposed to be the last one yet they brought him back for another i believe and then he is in freddy vs. jason.. i think there's two of those because freddy's head winks at the crowd when jason comes out of the water. anyways, this is what i think about sequels. xpanxx |
I agree that most sequels stink. This is most likely because the first one is someone's dream to make and they take years writing it. The ones after that are written within a year to make more money.
The Shrek sequels stink because the evil guy in the first one is so much better than that freak of a prince that is in the other ones. They did not need to wipe out the cool evil guy. So the dragon ate him. She could have thrown him up, or he could have come out the other end fine. It is a fantasy world. Anything could happen. They did show him singing from inside the dragon's stomach after the credits. |
Usually my rule with sequels is if it doesn't make it to theaters and goes straight to DVD it isn't worth seeing.
I hate movies that have sequels only because greedy producers/directors want to make more money off the same idea. ><; Examples of sequels gone wrong Air Bud, anything Disney *the originals are always amazing but trying to make a sequel to a classic is taboo*, The Santa Claus 2, etc. To quote the Golden Kneecap from the Fairly Odd Parents, "Sequels always do well in the box office but are never as good as the first movie!" |
I'm good with ALL the PotC sequals. They could make 200 more, and I would still probably not be bored with it. xD
...As long as it still had Johnny Depp. Anyway, sequels for movies that are meant to be a whole series from the beginning usually turn out pretty good, in my opinion. Otherwise, movies kind of just get old, and end up giving off that "well the first one was good, so let's try to come up with some crap for another" vibe. Things like Air Bud, Cinderella, Mulan, Balto, The Santa Claus... things like that. They just need to be grateful it did good the first time, and drop it. One that wasn't originally meant to be a series that I still think was good though, was Meet the Fockers. |
I LOVE the PotC movies and nothing anyone says is going to change my mind.
However, most Disney sequels are crap. I will admit that. However, for the people not like Pocahontas 2, you do know that what happens to her in that movie, marrying John Rolfe and going to England actually happened to the real Pocahontas right? She was 12 when she met John Smith, she never fell in love with him. I loved all of the Lion King movies, but I think that's just because Lion King is one of my favorite Disney cartoons. |
Its all very subjective. It seems some sequels suck particularly bad when the movie was based off the book. Like each subsequent movie drifts further and further from what was supposed to happen. Still, I guess thats what help keeps the two experiences separate. It also seems like the best sequels are for movies that were original to begin with but that isn't always the case.

I am watching the sequel to "The Santa Clause" right now. Well it is on in the background. It started really weirdly. I was beginning to think, what the heck were they thinking in making a sequel. It is starting to get better though. Not by much, but it is at least still on in the background. Sequels should only be made if they have a good story line for the sequel not some lame attempt at bringing the characters back together. Oh and in this sequel, and others, actors change between the two movies. It lessens the movie.

If the first movie is a huge hit and creates a lot of revenue. There's almost a certain guarantee that Hollywood and or other associated companies will commit themselves to a sequel. Sad, but true.
I feel they ruin movies this way. Take the Matrix for example. They could have left it where Neo learned how to read the system and fly. But noooooo, they decided it was not enough. And the last two of the trilogy were awful. I know, you said sequels, but I think it's all the same. Unless there was enough story to begin with for three films. But seriously, I only enjoy sequels when the don't feel tacked on to make a buck. When they are, they feel completely contrived, and mostly made for greed. Not for substance like most of the first feature films. Saw is another example of these kind of films. I know it's in the horror genre, and that genre always creates multiple, sucky-filled films. But the sequel wasn't a match for the first film in my opinion. So to answer the question of whether I favor sequels, my first reaction would be to say no. But then again, there are movies with sequels that are better than the first. Like books. However, those are few and far between. And since I can't think of any off the top of my head, then that remains to be my opinion on the matter. So my answer would have to be sometimes. ^^ |
Most sequels are produced in a pathetic attempt to bring in more money due to the success of the first. They believe that they don't have to work as hard because people will see them because they are sequels to good movies already. Most times they're wrong. In the case of Pirates - most people liked the second one (ew) and even some liked the third (double ew). But it still brought in a lot of money unfortunatly.
I do enjoy some sequels - I loved both Men in Black and Men in Black II. Analyze This and Analyze That were both VERY good movies. Indiana Jones - every single one of them is amazing and I'm SO excited for the 4th movie coming out next year - my guess is that it will be the worst of all of them - but i don't care. I grew up watching Indiana Jones and I'm going to see that movie :D lol Jaws is the only one in that series that is worth watching - all the other jaws movies sucked Star Wars - the first three made (4,5,and6) were all amazing! Episode 1 was pretty good - but then 2 and 3 sucked horribly - I was so dissapointed. They really should have left it with just '4, 5, and 6.' It would have been so much better. |
sequels hit or miss, that' the same with books and video games. Then you have those sequels that are only bridges to the third movie (PotC II).

I think sequels that are planned from the start are fine. Things like the original Star Wars trilogy, and "Lord of the Rings", for example. Those sequels are fine. But like Maria-Minamino said, a lot of times they just make a sequel to ride on the coattails of the first movie, and it seems like those, as a general rule, suck. Although sometimes they can still be entertaining. Like "Rush Hour 3"... can't say I was a huge fan of it as a /film/, but it was definitely still fun to watch. "Ocean's Twelve" was not my favorite of that bunch, either, but the cast is so well set-up for that it's going to be a decent watch, at least.
I guess as long as the sequel is watchable. Which is what the movie-makers want, I suppose ^^; |
