The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride.... one of the best movies of all time. I loved this movie when I was growing up and it still continues to be one of my favorites.

Do you still watch this movie? What were your favorite parts, who were your favorite characters, etc...

Alegretto 03-25-2007 03:52 PM

I so grew up on this movie. And I still watch it regularly. I just got my dad the Buttercup edition of the DVD for his birthday, too. =3 We sat around and recited all the lines with the movie. He and I are such nerds for it. <3 But how can one NOT love Inigo Montoya?! He wins so hard.

eig 03-25-2007 04:33 PM

it's one of those movies you can watch over and over. :3 when it's on tv, you're gonna watch it. <3

i have a lot of favourite parts. @[email protected]

i bought the dvd cause it ws 7$ XDD

Lachesia 03-25-2007 04:36 PM

I love this movie to death, own it, and quote from it regularly. I don't know that I can pick a favorite part, I have so many of them! However, the "As....you....wish...." crazy tumble down the hill is still pretty good. Followed immediately by "The fire swamp? We'll never survive." "Nonsense. You're just saying that because no one ever has." XD

The whole movie is just so perfect.

Rodents of unusual size? I don't believe they exist. *ATTACKED*

i love that part. :)

Marguerite Blakeney 03-25-2007 06:27 PM

I miss that movie. I saw it for the first time when it aired on TV (can't remember what channel). I wanna buy the Buttercup Edition though, it's so pink! Haha, but no really it has a sweet storyline and I'm a sucker for romance movies. Does anyone know when it was actually filmed? Fred Savage was still a little kid then and I don't really know when he was born.

It's great though, something I can remember. Inigo Montoya's cool but Prince Humperdinck is annoying (sp?) What about the guy who was freaking out about the poison in both goblets?

Keska 03-25-2007 06:57 PM

I adore this movie. It is one of my all time favorites.

I first saw it when I was young and it was love at first watching. I don't know if I can really pick a favorite part or a favorite character. I have so many. It's just that good.

Even though I have the DVD if it's playing on T.V. I'll still sit down to watch it.

momus 03-25-2007 07:17 PM

I love it, it's the movie I've watched most. My favorite parts are when the Dread Pirate Roberts is trying to "outwit" the Sicilian and when Inigo Montoya takes his revenge on the six fingered man. FANTASTIC.

Likewise, my favorite characters are Inigo Montoya and the Sicilian.

I think the movie was released 1987? It's older then me. There was a movie called The Sicilian released the same year. Inconcievable! (too bad it doesn't have anything to do with the Princess Bride Sicilian)

fawN 03-25-2007 10:15 PM

Yes, 1987. :D I saw it in the movie theater when it came out, which means I was about 10 then!

I love the movie, got it on DVD when I saw it, and I truly think it's the most quotable movie EVER! A classic! Such great parts!

No more rhymes now, I mean it!
Anybody want a peanut?

AS YOU WIIIiiiiish...

This movie is just a lot of fun.

Just a lot of cute little details all thoughtout the storyline make it good for what it is. I think I watch it whenever they air it on TV just because it's a story you can't get enough of.

I read the book, and watched the movie, and I wouldn't change either of them. They are nice cushy storys that you can't help but be swooned by.

Thought the ending of the book is... er, very diffrent... from the movies, even then it's good.
I had to go hunting for the ending too, because someone had gone through and ripped out the ending in all the copies of the books the school had (Over thirty of fouty at least). I ended up finally finding an english teacher who had a personal copy, and let me scan the last pages to read on my own.

 Wow, that's horrible! Ripping pages out of that many books! Even ONE book that's not their own, and I'd be appalled! I guess they weren't happy with the book ending? I didn't realized it was also a book. (was it a book before a movie, or the other way around?) I'll have to hunt the book down and read it!

Wonder if they ever caught who did it? I'm guessing not.

Zurie 03-26-2007 02:37 AM

  • As I was growing up, I was only able to catch bits and pieces of it, since we only really had one television with Cable on it for the longest time. But what parts I did get to see, I loved.

Sadly, the first time I got to watch the movie all the way through, I went to a midnight showing of it at one of the local theaters. That part sounds fun, but there was an assgoblin in the back rows making the most stale cracks at the movie trying to be funny through the whole thing. It just pissed me off so hard. I wanted to beat that fucker to a pulp for ruining the experience for me.

I still love the movie, but it'll be hard for my boyfriend to talk me into going to a midnight showing of a movie at that theater again. x____X

    EDIT::
What made me really love the story so much is that when I had gotten my wisdom teeth out, I pretty much just layed around on the couch and let mother bring me drinks to keep the sockets moist, but my boyfriend came over whenever he could to read me the actual Princess Bride book. It was so romantically sweet hearing the story come from his lips. Since he's obsessive about the movie, he even did voices for the different characters. It was adorable. I love him so much for doing that for me. <3333

THAT is my favourite part of the movie. x3
I squee'd so hard when I saw the giant rat. I was calling my pet rat, Roadkill, the "R.o.U.S" for ages.
I loved that movie. I LOVE that movie, down to the sweet young Cary Elwes. All through Saw, I was going "As you wiiiiiiish!" and totally ruined the good gore.
Good times, good times.

My boyfriend's hair just got long enough for a Dread Pirate chipmunk-arse ponytail, and I call him "Dread Captain Morgan" for it whenever he puts it up. x3

Victor Von Doom 03-26-2007 04:34 AM

Favorite characters?

Well: The Grandfather, the Grandson, Westley, Buttercup, Prince Humperdinck, the King, Vizzini, Inigo, Fezzik, the Shrieking Eels, the Man in Black (could it be ...), Inigo's Father (Mandy's ONE speech made me love him even though he didn't appear onscreen), Count "Corky St. Clair" Rugen, R.O.U.S.es, the Albino, Miracle Max and his "Witch" ("I'm not a witch, I'm your wife! And after what you just said, I'm not even sure I want to be THAT any more!" "You never had it so good!").

Favorite parts?

The old Nintendo baseball from the beginning.
The "beeeyuuutiful" opening and the "As you wish" scene (which brought Cary Elwes to the top of the "I'm straight, but I'd bone these men" list. Christian Bale is number one now, but only slightly. Edward Norton too)
"I shall never love again"
Inigo and Fezzik's rhyming
"Probably just some local fisherman out for a pleasure cruise at night. Through eel infested waters"
"Did I make it clear to you that your JOB IS AT STAKE!"
"No good, I've known to many Spaniards"
Inigo's soliloquy about his father.
The clifftop duel (one of the best best swordfights ever, if not the)
"In the meantime, rest well. And dream of large women."
Vizzini. Every word from his mouth.
"LIFE IS PAIN, HIGHNESS! Anyone who says differently is selling something."
"Assssss Yoooouu Wissssh..." and then she jumps down after him xD
"You're alive! If you wanted, I could fly!"
The Fire Swamp.
"Surrender!" "DEATH FIRST!"
"I'm on the Brute Squad." "You ARE the Brute Squad!"
Miracle Max and his Wife.
Westley getting his strength back. "A little head jiggle is supposed to make me happy? Hmm?"
Inigo vs. Rugen (favorite scene)
To the Pain!
The grandfather's "As you wish". You can really feel his love.

Oh. And I love the documentary parts where they talk about how Andre loved making the movie because he never felt more normal. And when Robin Wright Penn remembers how he used to rest his hand on her head to keep her warm and she starts crying ...

LiVeena 03-26-2007 04:36 AM

Its like one of those movies you've seen 5 million times and even though ur watching something else when it comes on tv you watch that

All the characters are great :D ot was awesome casting indeed as a great storyline :D

Aeris 03-26-2007 06:21 AM

This is my favorite movie of all time. I can quote the whole thing, and I just love it to pieces.

I first discovered it when my mom was borrowing it from a friend. I immediately purchased it and watched it everyday for months.

I can't even describe how much this movie means to me.

Anoni 03-26-2007 08:10 AM

I read the book first, and absolutely loved it. Then I watched the movie, and I suppose some parts didn't fit too well in my imagination, because I like the book more. xD

Though I bet if I watched the movie first and then read the book, I'd like the movie more. x3

Random amusing story: I actually read the book and watched the movie for English in one of my senior years of high school. Before that, someone from a few years above me went around scrawling on tables, walls, etc "Wesley never dies". Everyone was confused by it, but when we started that book in English, we were all like OHHHH. xD

amersemt 03-26-2007 12:07 PM

This is one of my all time favorites! We used to watch it all the time at sleepovers when I was a kid. Inconceivable! I have the book as well, but for some reason I've never read it. Maybe I should just to see how different it is.

Oh, I agree!! I'm so disappointed in the swordfights in movies like Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, or Pirates of the Caribbean compared. I base all my swordfights on that one as a standard!

Aliena 03-26-2007 06:27 PM

Oh yes! Classic movie! I can pretty much quote the whole thing (and do while I'm watching it). I don't know that I have a favorite part necessarily - the brain duel with the sicilian is funny. Wait! I think, actually, I love the part where Buttercup discovers Westley is alive most. My favorite lines in the script are from that part:

WESTLEY - Can you move at all?

BUTTERCUP - Move? You're alive. If you want, I can fly.

WESTLEY - I told you I would always come for you. Why didn't you wait for me?

BUTTERCUP - Well...you were dead.

WESTLEY - Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while.

BUTTERCUP - I will never doubt again.

WESTLEY - There will never be a need.

*melts*

I was so in love with Cary Elwes because of that movie!

And of course, the wedding ceremony. Mawwiage! lol

secretdae007 03-26-2007 07:57 PM

This is a pretty cool movie... Definitely one of my top 10 -writes that down for when she has to write paper about top 10 movies-

aoikirin 03-28-2007 05:46 AM

Ah, Princess Bride *giggles foolishly*
I just love that movie (as well as the book)!

Haha, I'm still disappointed that Florin doesn't exist :( (There's still hope, right? It could be one of those sunken countries... like Atlantis! ;_;)

I hadn't realized I'd even watched the Princess Bride when I was younger, until my friends in high school were talking about it.

One of my favorite scenes (although, how can I really pick?) is at Miracle Max's:

Miracle Max: He probably owes you money huh? I'll ask him.
Inigo Montoya: He's dead. He can't talk.
Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
Inigo Montoya: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.

Valerie: Ever since Prince Humperdinck fired him, his confidence has been shattered.
Miracle Max: Why'd you say that name? You promised me you would never say that name!
Valerie: What, Humperdinck?
Miracle Max: Aahaahh!
Valerie: Humperdinck! Humperdinck! Humperdinck!
Miracle Max: I'm not listening!

I still can't keep a straight face with Prince Humperdinck's name...

This movie rubs me the wrong way. And before you start sacraficing me to your god/gods, let me explain:

When I was younger, much younger, there was this boy named Mat who my friend and I met at a dance. They got pretty close and eventually started dating. She was in love. He was a player. After a month they broke up and she was heart broken. She recovered. He ended up dating a few more people or something like that and eventually started to say he had this huge crush on me. I obviously didn't want to break the friendship code but my friend practically pushed me into his arms.

We dated for a week but I just honestly wasn't that attracted to a guy who did drugs and had been sexual with my best friend, so I dumped him. He left me alone but then after not seeing him for a month he ends up beginning to stalk me at my day camp I volunteered at. So I call him to ask him what's going on and he said he was in love with me and that we should be together. I was completely thrown back, but I still didn't like him. We talked for hours and hours on the phone, and I can't say I didn't like the attention. Then one day we go over to his house and he says we have to watch his movie because in it has the kind of love he has for me. Yep, you know which movie it was.

I finally caved in after an entire summer of his crazy professes of love. We dated for a month... and then he tried to cheat on me with my friend who he had first dated. She rejected him and told him to get lost. I actually find the whole situation funny looking back because I was the one giving him a chance... not like I was the crazy in love one... it only hurt my ego since he had been stroking it for two months solid.

So, this movie always reminds me of him... and I don't like it. XP

magikjaz 03-28-2007 07:34 AM
