New Line has bought the remake rights to the controversial Japanese sci-fi pic "Battle Royale" reports Variety. Original film, produced by Toie and released in 2000 amid concerns about its violence, is set in an apocalyptic future in which schools are overrun by uncontrolled violence. The government responds by organizing an annual Battle Royale, in which a school class is picked at random and students are pitted against each other on an abandoned island in a game of survival. Neal Moritz ("The Fast And The Furious") and Roy Lee ("The Ring", "The Grudge") will produce. Thursday June 8th, 2006 4:32pm |
I've heard a lot of good things about Battle Royale over the years, so it seemed like a good idea when I finally picked it up at the video store. However, I was actually a bit disappointed with it. I was expecting it to be something really great because I'd heard so many good things about it from so many different people. I'm not saying it was horrible or anything, and I certainly didn't hate it. But it wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be. |

I have to say that Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies. The first part. Haven't seen the second. Hm...You say that the second part is boring. I wonder why it is always like that the first part is made of win and awesome while its sequel...well...often sucks.

Battle Royale is like... 300, almost. Not really. But to make sense of my statement, it gets me pumped. I love the story behind it, and I wish I could read the book. I've only seen the movie and read the VERY GRAPHIC novel versions. xD; Definitely more hard core than the movie. The second one was so-so, but funny if anything.
I am rather disappointed when I heard of the American remake. The Condemned did not even try. They used the same basic principle, take a bunch of people to an island in order to kill to survive for entertainment? But convicts? You have no sympathy for those people. Especially when one is a pro wrestler in real life. It would've gotten more praise, and controversy, if they used students. Sure, I understand child violence is a huge no-no for America, but why not college students if they're so nit-picky about it? That could've worked. Ah well, what can you do? |
I adore it and I've gotten several people in real life to watch it. It's seriously one of my favourite movies. I haven't read the book, but I haven't found it yet either. It's very much on my list of books that I really need to read, though.
It makes me twitch that a US company bought the rights to remake it. Considering what huge failures all other remakes of Japanese movies have been (with the exception of Shall We Dance where I actually prefer the US version), I just know that they'll destroy it. If they ever get around to actually making it. After the last school shooting, I don't think they will. I'm hoping one day I'll be able to buy or make a student uniform to cosplay in. That or cosplay as Oneesan. |

on the side note, that reminded me of one of Pablo Francisco's sketches, when he does Don LaFontaine, the movie annoucer guy. "Jean Claude Van Damme in the same crap you've seen over and over and over again~" D: |

I love BR, it's one of my favorite movies. I read the book too, and it was very good though I have a feeling it probably could have been translated better.
It was actually originally banned in Japan due to the political undertones of it. I didn't know there was an Americanized version being planned, but it makes me cringe thinking of how they would ruin it even if they managed to get the rights. I haven't seen the sequel, nor do I plan to but remember there was no original second book to base it off of. So it was only a movie sequel and the original director died so his son took over. I'm a little shallow but I disliked the art of the BR manga so much, I refused to pick it up. But from what I've heard both the novel and the movie sequel weren't worth picking up anyway. I'll just stick to rewatching the original movie and reading the book over and over instead. ^^ |
I just think the American version would end up cut to little pieces by censorship. Like, so badly that only people who saw the Japanese version would know what is going on.
...Then again, Americans DID make some bloody movies... |

I'm with most in that I agree the book was definitely the best out of all three media. I don't think the movie was very good-- but then, it didn't seem like they had much of a budget for it, so it'd be difficult to make a quality movie out of it, no? And the manga's allright, as far as I've gotten into it. I like some of the changes they made, but most of the things I like are just my own personal yays about certain characters being treated differently.
I do think the idea of an American movie is a good one, though. But then, I'm not the typical anime snob who watches everything in subtitles and all that jazz. Sorry, I can't stand the way Japanese tend to talk in anime, and I can't read and enjoy at the same time. The budget allowed on an American movie, though, ought to make it turn out significantly better than the Japanese version. Though they'll probably make changes, I doubt it'll be anything like the way people seem to be imagining. Particularly with the trend lately being "keep it as close to the original as possible". Directors are figuring out that's what we want. Well, most are anyways. Hitchhiker's Guide, for instance, wasn't bad at all, and Lord of the Rings was fairly spectacular. Give it a chance, guys. ^^ Also, The Condemned is almost blasphemy to the name of Battle Royale. Using convicts instead of children COMPLETELY DEFEATS THE PURPOSE of the plot. But, again, just my opinion. |
I think it was a veyry good movie =/ Exept the blood that was splashing around sometimes
(or wasnt that in this movie? been a while ago since I've seen it) What made me watch was, the idea what people would do if they are suddenly set up against eachother in the way as it happend in the movie, I wanted to know what people would do XD Yeah I'm horrable :| |
I read the book a while back, and wanted to see the movie, but I was waiting for my boyfriend to read the book so we could watch the movie.
After days of searching every Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, and finding out that Battle Royale has been 'banned' from rental stores, I gave in and bought Battle Royale (one an two combined) for $30. None to say the Least, I was disappointed. It might have been a better movie if I hadn't read the book. I got confused about the relationship between the Teacher, and Noriko. |
i guess one of my fav movies, ive seen both, n both were really kewl, the 1st movie made me cry more though XD and i watched it over and over again at least 6 times

<3 that movie. Interesting concept and it had so many twists.
Heard the book was better (but haven't read it) but I think that's because it went more in dept with each character. I still think they did a good job with the movie. The second movie was errm~ it tried. >.>; Just wasn't as good. I heard someone wanted to make a 3rd movie and the concept was an international Battle Royal. Just a rumor though. |
battle royale
I didn't really like it.
I guess it's just not my kind of movie. It was too boring |
I love this movie so much. The book is one of my prized possessions. Even though the movie varies slightly from the book, I enjoy the way the movie was done. Depending on WHO is going to be directing the American version may end up a disaster or hit. The part that will irritate me most about the Americanized version is if it hits theaters kids might become overly excited about it and not even have the slightest idea of it's origins, which is one of my biggest pet peeves.

the manga is very descriptive x3 and very gory. i have 1-3. I havent seen the movie yet though.

OMG
OMG BATTLE ROYALE IS MY LIFE. I live and breathe that movie, honestly. It was by far the best movie and spoke to me deeply. My favorite actors were in that movie, too, which doubled the greatness. I was addicted to it for months. I saw Battle Royale 2, which was a bit worse then I expected and kind of ruined the first movie for me, but still it was great. Sometimes I even wish I could experience going to an island and having to be forced to battle my classmates. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some depressed freak out to kiilll my classmates, I love my friends and would do anything for them, it just seems like a deep, thrilling, and chilling experience to go through. The novel and manga were pretty good too. But I loved the movie the best. 10/10 (: |
Is there anywhere I can find this to watch on the internet?
|
My friend had me watch it with her and her boyfriend shortly after she finished the book. Going into it I thought I would have it on account of being afraid through it, but it was really good.
Never getting on a bus for a school trip again, good thing I'm out of school. |
