Battle Royale

My friend once showed me this movie a few years ago and I must say that it is a very interesting piece. It's a very gory Japanese movie with a nifty plot line. Anyone seen this movie? Share your thoughts.

Here is the IMDB page in case you want to know more:

Great movie, though I honestly preferred the book. Original media for the win!

The manga was also pretty good, though the art style was too variable for my liking. Some of the characters looked great, while others looked like Mickey Mouse on several shots of Heroin.

I've seen it. They're all supposed to be in the 9th grade or something right? Because daaaang they look pretty advanced to be 14 years old D:

(Lmao I almost typed "up my ass" to the end of that sentence.)

momus 04-13-2007 02:43 AM

I think they're actually all supposed to be 15ish.

I loved this movie. I dressed up as Oneesan (the girl from the instructional video) at my first con. I like the book better, though.

The manga was horrible, though. DX

I got the book but just have not gotten a chance to read it yet @_x

misaki_hatake 04-13-2007 03:15 AM

dimiix 04-13-2007 09:58 AM

DJ LAZA 04-13-2007 11:55 PM

With the sequel, you're really not missing much. Trust me on this one.

Kind of boring? ;o Even the action sequences seem uninspired.

Haha yeah his hair was a mess...

I swear that 10 minute speech where he started naming off all those places made me want to hit the skip button on the DVD...

I've seen the movie and read the book. The book was really good and I was surprised how the movie was so close to the book. I <3 this movie, but I'm disappointed that they are most likely going to make an American version D;

Kimi 04-16-2007 01:31 PM

I love the original >w<

But I've heard they're going to make an American version. Gutted. :(

I saw this movie many moons ago, and is high in contention for the best foriegn movie I've seen. Like others though, I think the book was better than the movie in terms of giving a full background to most of the students that helps you to understand why they adapted to BR the way they did (especially the Yakuza kid who's name escapes me just now). I liked it so much that I did my Higher English Book Study on the theme of "Is it right to kill if the alternative is to be killed?" which accounted for most of my passing grade. So I have a lot to thank Battle Royale for. XD

As for all the talk of an English adaptation of Battle Royale has got to be a load of crap. This rumour has been going all over the world for a few years now and has yet to become something. Also, doing BR in Hollywood with a teenage cast wouldn't be done unless they upped it from a class of 15 year olds to 18 year olds. I think that new movie "The Condemed" is as close as the Western-world gets to BR.

Remake

In June 2006, Ain't It Cool News website reported that New Line Cinema along with producers Neil Moritz and Roy Lee intend to produce an "Americanized" adaptation of the book. The remake rights have been bought, with release tentatively set for 2008. In a July New York Times article, Lee assured Battle Royale fans of his respect for the original work, and stated that despite earlier concern the characters would still be young teenagers and that he would draw additional plot elements from the novel.

I'm disappointed to see this news. I really don't like remakes of foreign films anyway, but Asian films in particular don't translate well imho

that being said, i had never heard of this movie until last summer when a friend recommended it to us. Rented it from netflix and loved it! brilliant brilliant movie. I didn't know it was based on a book. must find and read.

The book is brilliant.

As for the Americanized movie, it's doubtful it will really happen. From what I've heard, they're really having a hell of a time getting the rights to make this film. Let's hope they just give it up. It doesn't need an American remake anyways- it's too new a piece and it would just look out-of-place in any other setting or production.

magikjaz 04-19-2007 07:34 AM

according to the article the rights have already been bought. do you know something more than that?

Alegretto 04-19-2007 07:38 AM

Hm. I haven't been following the issue closely. Last I heard was that there was still trouble concerning the purchase of the rights. However, that bit of news for me could have been tossed my way before the rights were seemingly settled. I'm just going off what I know.

MistaGoodLeg 04-19-2007 04:39 PM

Is there a better source then Wikipedia for this news? Wikipedia is not exactly creditable.
