Well, I have yet to see the movie, but in the past, I've seen the play, and read the book many times.
And to tell you the truth, I never had much of an interest in watching it. I think it was a bad book to turn into a movie. The whole point was that these kids were using there imagination, which simply states, they're not real, and can't help you in realy life. But the movie changed that. I think it ruined the plot of the book, and got rid of the meaning. I mean sure, maybe it is a good movie, but if you've read the bok, it does shame to it. Maybe I'll watch the movie just to comapre, buit I can't say it'll be any good for me. I don't think it shoud've been a movie, and the way they depicted it, ehhh. Oh well, I'll try anyways. :]

Wait a second. How do you know the movie ruined the point of the book if you haven't even seen it, yet?

The Mouse 07-06-2007 02:26 AM

I remember trying to read the book a looooong time ago, but I couldn't really get into it. I saw the movie a couple of days ago, and it totally changed my opinion of the whole story. I cried, honestly, and I hardly EVER cry at movies. It was such a wonderful story.

I also watched the extra bit about the making of the movie, with interviews of the author and several other people, including a couple of teachers who teach this book as part of their curriculum. It was an eye-opener. The author, Katherine Peterson, said that when her son was young, one of his friends at school died, and that it was a sudden, tragic death (I don't remember exactly how). She said that it was very hard for her to have to try and explain it to her son, and that she suddenly felt the urge to write a story. Bridge to Terabithia was what came out.

I think this story is very profound, yet very simple. It's easy to understand, and yet its meaning goes deeper than words. Seeing the movie made me want to pick up the book again.

Simple, the whole point of the book had to do with the world being created out of imagination. Meaning, that it wasn't real, obviously. But in the movie, the imaginated characters save the boy, showing that the characters were real. I've seen it in the commercial. And the whole point, is that the imagination helped them solve problems, and the movie made these things into real things, that effected the characters real life. Sooo, basically it changed the whole book.

So you're taking one scene from a commercial--that's probably out of context--and condemning the entire movie based on it? I haven't seen the movie myself, so I don't know whether your suspicion (which is what it is because you don't know whether this is factual) is founded.

Yah, I guess that is what I'm doing. Haha. But I'm mostly saying, that in general, the book was about imagination, and making it into something real and visible, in my opinion ruined the book. :]]

Degnne 07-06-2007 07:02 PM

Ok, fair enough. :3

Tori 07-06-2007 08:04 PM

Nifty. c: <3
And, maybe I will watch it at some point, just for comparison sake. :]]

iGeek 07-08-2007 08:18 PM

  • Beh, Tori.
Remember how I prodded you to watch RENT?
Well, Bridge is a good movie.
    As a movie.
It does, indeed, put the book to shame, though. : /

    Degnne
The scene she spoke about wasn't really out of context.
    MINORSPOILER. :]
Not too important to the story, though.
    Prince Terrien (the dog) brought some keys to Leslie because they jingled, and she was looking for jingly things. The keys belonged to Jesse's dad, and they were for the greenhouse. When Jesse saw them, he went to try and get them from the tree they were hanging on and fell, and then the creature saved him. ._.;

Winterwolfgoddess 07-09-2007 12:02 AM

I actually preferred the book. In most movie cases, the book is always better.

And yes, Tori watched. Ahaha, so sad, so catchy, and so confusing. :]]

Alright, Tori will add that to her movie's to watch list then. So I can compare with proof! x]] I make no sense. :]

Maria-Minamino 07-09-2007 03:58 AM

The movie was pretty good - the book was MUCH better i think --- and even though I knew she would die (from reading the book quite a number of times in elementary school) i still cried horribly in the movie. but they changed some things around and it was better as a book
but they did a good job - especially for disney O.O I was worried they would sugar coat it - but i was pleased :D

ljosberinn 07-09-2007 08:45 PM

  • Guys, will you please watch your spoilers here? I had to edit a couple of posts for them, either mark them with a clear, visible SPOILER, or make the letters for it white or something. I know that I would've absolutely hated it, especially for this movie, to get any spoilers. :/

Anyway, I saw it in the cinema with my brother and a friend, and we all loved it. None of us had even heard about the book, we just went to see it because I wanted to go with my brother to the movies and it looked pretty good. I had no idea what to expect though.
The acting was great, and the message was wonderful. I was so afraid Disney might fuck it up with some cute message or whatever, but they didn't, and I'm very thankful for that.

Minor spoilers:I couldn't even remember that scene where the giant saved him, but at least it didn't affect me at all - my brother, friend and I were all of the opinion throughout the movie that it was all imaginary, there was no magical world. And all the people I've talked to think the same, so I don't think it's ruining anything. :/End spoiler.

I think this movie is for everyone, also children. Someone in the thread said it might not be for young children, but even though it's not the typical super-happy Disney ending, it does handle things children should learn about. I think people keep underestimating children, thinking they can't handle real life and so must be kept under some kind of a veil, taking care what exactly they do see and learn about. They have to face life as it is someday, and it'd be better if it won't hit them in the face like a brick. :/

iGeek 07-10-2007 03:01 AM

  • It's true that Disney didn't cover up the valuable messages in the story, they didn't even butcher it all that much really. Still, though, some things in the movie, like Leslie, just threw me off really. How it was edited and how it was transformed.

    Spoiler comparisons.
In the book, Jesse couldn't decide Leslie's gender for a while, AND Leslie's first appearance was at their home, not at school. In the movie, Leslie's gender was BLATANTLY obvious to the audience and to Jesse.

In the book, Terabithia's main 'HQ' or sorts was a little doghouse things that the two kids could sit in. In the movie, it was a treehouse.

There are also some other things I can't recall too immediately.
    End spoiler.

Even so, parts of the movie were very touching. :3

    -le sigh-
But still. I have this OCD-sticklereyness to storyline.
I don't like the movie too much. It would have been better if I hadn't read the book beforehand.

xX Nightmare Angel Xx 07-10-2007 08:43 AM

Lovely movie ;]

  • I didn't read the book for it, but I watched the movie :3. I heard the book was better, but whatever. I'm too lazy to read it right now >>;;

I saw it as an excursion for my school =3. I thought it looked boring when I saw the previews but I thought, "School or movies? Movies..." xD. It actually turned out pretty good. The part where that girl died really surprised me ;O

It was way more interesting than I expected. I recommend it, it wasn't in my top twenty or anything, but it was still good :]

My little sister and aunties dragged me to watch this in theatres. I thought it was going to be junk--but it was a pretty touching movie. I cried--er, teared. xD I never read the book, but I enjoyed the movie the way it was. I actually watched it a second time, though I dragged my boyfriend to it that time. >:3 I loved the Terabithians. Imaginative characters. Especially the bird cage guy.

-Infinate Grace- 07-14-2007 01:38 AM

I actually quite liked this movie. My husband was shocked that he actually found it to be pretty good as well. I thought it flowed well, had a good story line as well. Anyways, this is a movie I would actually recommend to a friend.

CLAMP 07-14-2007 06:21 AM

Oh! I want to see that movie so bad. it looks quite interesting to me. I love fantasy flicks anyway and it would probably be really good. My family will probably rent it though rather than buy. We don't buy DVDs all to often.

Sirocco 07-14-2007 06:28 AM

Oh, I should say that I like this film. I haven't read a book (I haven't know that this book exist) and before I saw this film I don't know anything about it. I thought that it's just a fantasy film like a lot of others, so I was really surprised... But it was nice suprise. I really don't want anything like "Chronicles of Naria" AGAIN. (Who want to see the same film with slightly differences again? ;d) And because of that I like "Bridge to Terabithia" at all. Plotline was good, and it wasn't too Disney-ish. And it's really nice that this film shows the power of imagination.
Not the best film I've watched but good x)

.GreyHeartz. 07-14-2007 08:49 PM

I watched that movie a while ago and I though it was an alright movie :D .

LemonChiffon 07-15-2007 10:08 AM

I read the book when I was younger. My friend and I spoke about how we were disenchanted by the additions in the movie - neither of us has seen it yet, but we have seen the previews. My friend expressed that she felt unwilling to see it, because they include a portrayal of the world that was never described in the book. We thought this would detract from the focus on their relationship.

Perhaps our feelings will change when we see it soon.

ljosberinn 07-15-2007 12:13 PM

Oi! Watch the spoilers, kids! We don't want to ruin the movie for anyone! >__o

aphrodite remix 07-17-2007 01:48 AM

I saw that movie last week. They were pretty close to the book however they left out a few parts, and i'm a bit iffy on what actually ends up happening to the boy. I had no idea it would be that sad though, oh man I cried like such a wimp. Almost as much as I did when I watched Simon Birch. Personally though I do think it was well done, and a lil more on the serious side. Deffinately not something I'd let smaller kids watch.

raine dragon 07-17-2007 02:16 AM

I've read the book, but when I saw the commercial, I nearly died.

I mean, this is one of the few books in my collection of a few thousand that shakes me, brings me to tears and leaves me a mess for days.

I can't read it.

I want to say I hate it, but it's such an incredible book, I love the depth and the just.. the whole thing is so real.

I was highly disappointed by the trailers. so much so, that I couldn't bring myself to go see it.

Caeluma 07-17-2007 03:04 AM

I went to see it with my friend when it was in theaters. I had read it when I was younger but she hasn't. I started crying before anything had happened and luckly she didn't notice but by the end we were both balling our eyes out!
