Recognizing by their Voice -Actors/Actresses

This is what happened:

I was watching tv - and mine usually has cantonese, mandarin, japanese, and english alternating a lot.

Then, while typing something on the computer, I overheard someone talking in english, and immediately shouted, "Is that Daniel Radcliffe?". From my room.

I wasn't paying attention to the show AT ALL. And also, it was rare to find him on hong kong pop news all of the sudden. It was a japanese news clip, too.

I am a Harry Potter fan through and through, but I haven't watched the movie since the fourth one came out on dvd. And I don't watch the movies over and over.

Then I thought about it in my head, how I recognized other famous actors in animation films sometimes (like watching a Happily n'ver After and seeing the prince I thought 'KRONK!')

Can you do that, people? Done that before? Or am I crazy and tv obsessed?

Nariza 07-05-2007 03:56 AM

I don't see very well, but I definitely have a good ear. When my parents are watching a movie in the other room and I'm listening, they'll ask me "Who is that?" and I can tell them.

The Mouse 07-05-2007 05:05 AM

No, you're not crazy, Red and Black. ^_^ I can sometimes do this as well (in fact, sometimes I surprise myself, lol), although you have to admit, some actors'/actresses' voices are easier to recognize than others. I would say that Daniel Radcliffe's voice is fairly easy to recognize, because it's got certain obvious qualities that stick out in your mind. Not that I'm downplaying your skillz or anything! X-D

Donna 07-05-2007 05:56 AM

  • I happen to do that a LOT. xD
And not just with actors and actresses but also singers and rappers. [even when I'm not paying attention to the song and don't know it].
Most people have unique voices so it's easy to tell them apart. If they have a normal voice, then you can definitely narrow it down to who it isn't.

life in red and black 07-05-2007 08:43 PM

Now I think about it, I can tell the old hong kong pop singers apart, but not the new ones, who sound all alike to me. Before, all the singers were very talented and unique...

Yay! So, I'm not alone. And hey, I don't think I have skills, but I didn't want to prove my dad right that I watch too much television and movies, lol.

I actually did this once - while watching Spirited Away for the millionth time, I heard Haku's voice and though "Wait..I know that voice..from..somewhere else..is that Chase Young's voice actor?!" And so I looked it up on the internet and yep - they're the same guy. xD I was like DUUUUDE! <3

It makes sense. << They both turn into dragons, lol..

kurama_grl 07-20-2007 09:59 PM

I think that Orlando Bloom definately has a distinctive voice.

of course, his face is also very distinctive. XP

Morien 07-20-2007 10:54 PM

I had a hard time figuring it out, but Brother Justin from Carnivale is Mr. Krabs from Spongebob. @[email protected] That's a doozy.

I did hear Zach Braff from Scrubs doing a Wendy's commercial. And I was totally right. :D

So yeah, sometimes I can tell.

Eimi 07-21-2007 02:34 AM

well i dont know if i can do that with peoples voices...but i can tell you the name of a song or the artist that performs it by just listening to a little bit of the very beginning..and i can also pick out a movie that my mum might be watching in the living room by hearing just a bit of it from my bedroom..that kind of stuff

Zweres 07-21-2007 05:14 AM

  • : ] I can actually recognize voices very well - Daniel's Radcliffe's and Johnny Dept's voice is very easy to recognize and distinct

Some actors/actresses have very recognizable voices.
The best example for that is the German voice actor for Alf and Tony Danza...I forgot his name though. I'd recogize that scratchy voice any time.

sayuri_nitta 07-24-2007 08:46 PM

Yeah I can do that, I have a good ear for voices <3

Youn 07-24-2007 08:59 PM

Some people are more easier to recognice than others but most people have unique sounding voices.
It also depends on if the person is using their own voice or if he or she is in character. I know a lot of new voice actors who sound the same in every new role they take.
Actors, singers and other celebrities are usually easier to recognice, I think since they use the same voice and the same way of speaking for every role, with the exception of any eventual accents.

Teeth 10-09-2007 02:44 AM

Haha, that happens to me ALL the time! xD
You know the show 6Teen on Teletoon? Yeah well, to anyone who watches, you know Joansey? yeah well I was watching TV when a Pizza Hut Commpercial came on and when I heard the narrator say his lines I was all like 'Woah, Joansey!?'
:3
haha..I'm a Teletoon Nerd. :3
Ive noticed things like this many times. x3

I'm pretty good at recognizing voices of singers and actors I like. I think Skipp Sudduth's voice is the easiest for me to recognize. It's all deep and gruff. Lovely. Not many people seem to know him, though. I guess you have to be a Third Watch Addict to really recognize him.

I agree, Youn, my POV too (almost posted the same thing). To add, it also depends on how much we love 'em (lol). In this case, Daniel Radcliffe's not surprisingly an attention-getter.

Sho-Shonojo 08-14-2008 04:02 PM

I don't do this so much with regular actors as I do voice actors. I can tell you how many times I've watched anime or played a video game and thought "I've heard that voice before" I don't know how many times I've looked up a character and found out the same guy voiced five other characters I know about. I've noticed that they pretty much took the cast from Tales of the Abyss and made them do .Hack//G.U. too.

=3

Meridon 08-15-2008 07:54 PM

lol I do it all the time, I'll just be eavesdropping on a show that someone else is watching and i'll be like, "oooooh.. is that *insert actor/actress?* " xD lol

they're usually like, "wtf. how did you know that? o_O"

Sho-Shonojo 08-23-2008 03:57 AM

I just figured out thirty minutes ago that Kadaj from Advent children and Harry McDougal from Outlaw Star have the same voice actor. I wasn't watching either or looking it up, it just came to me out of no where.

Shrimp_Man 09-10-2008 03:36 AM

I did that when I heard the commercial for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy a few years ago. I was sitting on my computer and my head whipped around to look at the television and I was all "Alan Rickman's voice!"

Twethereal 09-10-2008 06:43 PM

That happens to me a lot. I won't always know the name of the actor or actress all the time, but I can always tell whoever asks what character in another TV show or movie the person has been in.

Actually, I find that Johnny Depp's voice isn't always the same. Jack Sparrow sounded quite different when compared to Willy Wonka, and I don't think he sounds the same in The Corpse Bride either.

As for recognizing voices: My sister and I do that all the time. It's mostly with animated stuff. (Though there was the first time we watched Take The Lead, we noticed the asian boy was the same guy that did the voice for Jake Long in The American Dragon.)

Cerenity 09-12-2008 01:50 AM

Shrimp_Man-Yeah, Alan Rickman's voice is really distinctive. I think I had the same reaction when I watched the previews.

I used to watch Shaman King when I was younger, and was a big fan of Lenny. Then one day I saw part of an episode of Tokyo Mew Mew, and realized right away that the voice actor of Dren was the same one as Lenny.
