The Best M. Night Shyamalan Movie?
(Okay, sort of ripping off the Tim Burton thread. So sue me.)
So, it's simple. Which M. Night Shyamalan movie is your favorite? If you can't remember all of his movies, or just don't know who M. Night Shyamalan is, he's the director (and normally writer/producer) for movies like... The Sixth Sense Unbreakable Signs The Village Lady In the Water Which of the movies is your favorite? Which do you think has the best acting? Story line? Is there one you just didn't like at all? Alot of the main actors appear in more than one of his movies (Bruce Willis, Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Howard), which of those do you think did the best in his movies? And anything else you can pull from this topic. |
I actually I own all of his movies XD. I'm a Shyamalan fan.
But my favorite, its kinda a tie between The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. |
Easily The Sixth Sense. I felt that the rest of his movies just weren't up to par with the one I just listed. The Village was extremely confusing, and I just felt that The Lady in the Water was just "meh."
Signs was okay, but I've never been a one for alien movies. As for Unbreakable, I never saw it. What was it about? o.o; |
admonished - Aah, lucky! The only one I have is The Village.
Parasite - Oh, yes, The Village is pretty confusing the first time you watch it. It's definitely one of those movies you need to watch twice. Then you're like "ohhhhh, okay, I get it now." But if there was just something you overall didn't get, I could try to explain it to you. I've seen it quite a few times. ^^ Ooh, and unbreakable is good. It's a been a long time I've seen it though. Uhm, basically, this guy (Bruce Willis) discovers he's sort of a real-life superhero. But in a very modern, "realistic" way. Not in a spandex-suit, fly-to-the-rescue way. It sounds sort of lame, I know. But when you see it, it's amazing. But it's been sooo long since I've seen the movie, I can't describe it well. Here's the wiki for it. It has tags saying it needs to be rewritten, but it could probably do a better job at explaining than I could. o.o I recommend renting it ^^ Or just buying it, if you prefer. |
I'm going to go with the Village.
I loved the Sixth Sense but it's just not a movie I can watch over and over since I already know what's going on. I guess the same thing could be said about the Village, but I feel that it's better to watch more than once because it's got a lot of stuff going on... I can't stand Signs. |
I would definitely say The Village. I've heard alot of people say that they didn't really like it that much, but I thought it was a great movie.. I really enjoyed it.
It's been a long time since I've seen The Sixth Sense, but from what I remember, it was pretty good too, just not something I could watch over and over again. I do remember renting Unbreakable once, but when I tried to watch it, I just couldn't get interested in it. I thought it sounded like it would be pretty good, but then it couldn't hold my interest. I didn't really like Signs that much either, and I thought Lady in the Water was just.... stupid. It didn't hold my interest at all, and I just quit paying attention to it after a while. |
WARNING- Spoilers for The Village.
I own and love them all, so it's difficult for me to pick a favourite. They all have different points that make them fantastic in their own way. Although if I HAD to pick a top three: The Sixth Sense was amazing- a real chilling horror with a great twist, but it still had an emotional core to the story, without being too tacky or cliched, which is VERY difficult to do in a scary movie. I know Lady in the Water got bad reviews, and a lot of critics thought Shyamalan was being overly indulgent, but I really loved it. It had its creepy moments, but overall I just enjoyed the whimsical fairy-tale themes that ran through it. Lastly, I really, really love The Village. Again, it was really under-appreciated by critics, despite having a really good twist at the end. I think a lot of people didn't read deeply enough into it; back in college I wrote a 15000 word essay about how The Village is actually an important political statement, and reflects the current social paranoia and mistrust of authority. INCOMING- Media Deep-Reading Rant! The fact that the "council", or authority figures in the town create fictional villains that terrorize the villagers in an attempt to keep the villagers under control could be seen as a response to the current "War on Terror" and the rising suspicians that the threat from outside terrorists wasn't as great as political leaders were making out. Seriously, think about it- the warning colours used in the film were amber and red- the same colours as the homeland security system. And, most notably, the park was called Walker Park... as in George Walker Bush? We all know there's no such thing as coincidence as far as signifiers and symbols within film are concerned. It just makes me sad that most people didn't take the time and effort to look more deeply at this clever movie. |
Out of the ones you listed, The Village is the only film of his I've managed to watch more than ten times.
The Sixth Sense bored me through the first watch in theaters, and then when it came to DVD I watched it like three more times and became bored of it. The movie never really scared me. Same goes for Unbreakable, which I've only seen twice. Signs, I've seen about four times and the first time I saw it... It literally weirded me out for a few days after seeing it. The Village is by far my most favorite film of his. I've seen it near 28-30 times or so and I know like about 85% of the movie by memory. Mostly I think I like the movie most because of the romance between Ivy & Lucius, and the envy of Noah. The Lady In The Water, Honestly I only saw once and after that I gave up on it. Two of my friends love it, but I just couldn't stand it. There were parts where I just felt like dozing off because I wasn't into it at all. :( |
The Sixth Sense is awesome.
When I saw Signs at 12 or 13, it boggled my mind and inspired me as a writer. The Village was about the point that I realized that M's whole "shtick" is twist endings. Oh, and The Village was lame. How the heck did they keep planes from flying overhead, anyway? Only that I saw the end of Lady in the Water and there was nothing really twisty about it. Regardless, I'm still very hesitant on his movies. |
sixth sense hands down. it is the most popular and well acclaimed for a reason. i understand how some users are stating that they can't watch the movie again due to the fact that they already know the twist ending, but the movie is still suspenseful and enjoyable to watch in my opinion. also some users state that the movie is slow paced and couldn't find interest in the movie because of this. i have heard this criticism before, but i personally don't agree. i found the subject matter in the movie very intense, and was disturbed by the ghostly images, and the tense dynamic between bruce willis and haley joel osment's characters. so, even without the twist ending, i would still have enjoyed the film, which is probably why i still enjoy watching it to this day.
however, even though sixth sense is my favorite, i enjoy all m. night shyamalan movies. unbreakable is one of the most underrated of m. night shyamalan movies in my opinion. i found the dynamic between bruce willis and samuel l. jackson fascinating, and was completely gripped by this movie up towards the end. signs is incredibly entertaining. always a fun movie to watch, especially if you enjoy movies on alien invasions. village is a really good movie, however, many criticized the movie for it's "predictable" ending. i think the only reason for this is many people took one look at the director, and thought that since m. night shyamalan was directing, there had to be a twist ending and were able to reach a logical film conclusion because of this. despite the criticism, i thought bryce dallas howard (ivy) and joaquin phoenix (lucius) were fantastic, and ultimately still really enjoy it. even though i enjoy all of shyamalan's movies, i really struggled with the concept found in lady in the water. this movie was heavily criticized when it came out, and got very mixed reviews. i think the fact that the mythology behind the story was made up by the director, and did not come from some actual mythological historical source, made people feel that the whole concept was absurd. nevertheless, the characters were entertaining in the film, and it did have some enjoyable qualities. however, i hope that when shyamalan makes his next film, it's a bit more practical, so that he could redeem himself from the criticism many found in lady in the water. anyways, those are my critiques of the shyamalan films. you are more than welcome to agree or disagree with any statements i made. :D |
I liked The Village a lot. Unfortunately a friend of mine spoiled it before I watched it, but still...
Of course The Sixth Sense is creepy too. It made me remember what it was like as a child to be afraid of something and to be alone at night. |

I'd have to go with The Sixth Sense.
Unbreakable, was very interesting. Signs was interesting also, but The Sixth Sense is just the winner. I mean, the twist ending came out of nowhere for a lot of viewers, and was surprising. Unlike the other movies he's made, where people were searching for the twist even before the movie began. I just think that Sixth Sense was his best work to date. |
best
got to be sixth sense hands down
|
I'm going to go with the minority and say I really liked the village. I don't have a direct answer to the 'planes' bit, but it's likely they either made some way to explain them or had some kind of order to keep them from flying directly over. Sort of a mini 'no fly' zone.
Unbreakable was interesting, but it really just didn't captivate me the way some of his others did. Maybe because most of Mr. Glass's collection was very 'Old Marvel' style comics, and even Modern Marvel is at best, exceedingly black and white, and prone to giant, gaping sloppy plot holes, which made his obsession with them a little obnoxious. It's a stupid reason not to like the character, but thats just me. It's a little weird to think of him as making an "Avatar" Movie, but thats better than most of Hollywood getting their hands on it. Just...odd. I don't tend to associate him with making that kind of movie. |
My favorites would have to be the Sixth Sense and the Village. Sixth Sense was awesome and so original! However the Village, while it did disappoint me with how it was promoted as a Horror flick and it's ending, I still loved it overral theme and symbolism. Too bad his later films are started to be expected as unexpected. Anyway, he's going to begin filming on the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action movies once they get over the copyright issues (which will take a bit). And seeing as I love the series, and it's his first not-self written movie, I hope he does well. :D

The Sixth Sense, HANDS DOWN.
It's on my list of top five favourite movies. I think that his other movies just weren't as good as that one, in my opinion. |
Sixth Sense hands down (: Next it would be Signs, that was a great movie to.
I can watch Sixth Sense a million times and never get tired of it :3 |
The sixth Sense hands down. I really liked Signs and Lady in the Water as well. That one with the forest was kind of silly though.
|
Lady in the Water?
I really enjoyed Lady in the Water, though I'm sure many people didn't. It was a little off I must admit, and not quite as intense as his past movies (all of which I love) but there was more heart in it I think.
He wrote the story for his children, and that in itself made it special. He knew that his family would be looking at this as something that they grew up with, something special to all of them. I think he wanted it to be just right. I loved it. |
I didn't know M. Night Shyamalan made those movies! All I knew about him was that he has something to do with the series: AVATAR
And that he says "What a TWIST" all the time. :3 Now that I know the movies he's made, I'll say I really liked The Signs, The Village, and I haven't seen the Sixth Sense but I hear its fantastic.. I didn't watch Lady in the Water because my friend saw it and she said it was really lame. D; |
"Lady in the Water" definitely had it's silly moments, but on the whole it was cute. If you didn't go at it expecting a world shaking epic, I think it would be quite enjoyable.
|
I agree with a lot of people that "The Sixth Sense" is Shyamalan's best movie. I haven't seen "The Village," "Unbreakable," or "Lady in the Water," but I'm considering seeing the latter two. "The Village" was spoiled for me, and I don't think I would enjoy it very much.
Anyway, I saw "Signs" a while back, and I just can't get into that movie. If the aliens were intelligent enough to achieve space travel and get to Earth in the first place, I think they would have been intelligent enough to think to themselves, "Hmmm, we're allergic to water. Maybe we shouldn't invade a planet that's 75% water?" But maybe that's just me. "The Sixth Sense" made a lot of sense to me, and it was creepy to boot. It's an all-around good movie: good plot, good characters, good actors/actresses, good tone, good camera technique, etc. |
What a twist!!!
anyway...ummm The 6th Sence i guess... |
The Sixth Sense is easily his most popular movie, but my favorite is Unbreakable, probably because I am a comic book fan. But the other day I found the movie on DVD after looking for a few years.
