Yes! Oh god, yes I have! I remember reading a book who's protagonist was just...perfect, and the only issue she was having was that she shy! Seriously, what is up with that? Other than that, I have put down quite a few books and shut down quite a few movies because of how perfect the protagonist is. Is it because I'm jealous? No, it's because it's just downright annoying. Speaking of which, I also hate protagonists who either whine about how their life sucks, or make you feel like you can't help but pity them. Yes, there are quite a few character in some stories that you will pity, but in a...good way. Like, you don't have to, you just want to because you can't help it.

Oh My Gosh, I know what you mean! I hate those characters that are just so darn perfect! A lot of them do come from animated shows. For example, I despise the main character in Shugo Chara because she's one of those people who can just say a few corny words of wisdom and change a person's heart completely. And of course, she has to have more powers than anyone else. She may not be a complete mary sue, but she's close enough and I hate her.

I didn't care for Elizabeth or Will in POTC, and I couldn't stand any of the main characters in the Kingdom Hearts games D: they were just so boring

Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.
Never read the books, so sue me. The fans are enough to convince me that these two characters are completely annoying and flat, and I will never read the books for that reason.

I know there are a lot of Twilight fans here, so I'm hesitant to even bring this up (don't kill me!) but I couldn't stand a single character in the books. I don't see books based on movies on principle (I completely avoided The Golden Compass movie after learning it would be cannibalized and turned into a film, thus raping a small part of my late childhood) and I avoided the Twilight movie completely for fear of being "one of those people" at the theatre. You know, the kind that comments loudly and has nothing but bad things to say about the movie? Yeah, I don't think I could have helped myself.
Anyway, I grew up a bookworm and as a result have a very high standard when it comes to the written word. If I don't like the smallest detail of the book (say, the way a character reacts to life-changing news) that can put me off a book completely. For me, Twilight was full of characters that did not experience growth of any kind and seemed too perfect to be believable. (Don't kill me!) I'm one of those young ladies who hated Twilight and will rant rabidly about it for hours if it is accidentally brought up, unfortunately for my friends. (And unfortunately for you, too, post-reader, as this is what I'm doing right now.) I never read any of Twilight's following books, and maybe Stephenie Meyer's writing style improves, but I refuse to put myself and those I know through that (because if I hate it, they will hear about it).
In conclusion, there has never been a book like Twilight in my opinion. Why? (Don't kill me, I beg you.) Because it simply wasn't written well enough to have been published in the first place. It would be more at home, in my extremely humble and entirely honest opinion, on fictionpress or a similar website.
Once again, please don't kill me, Twilight fans. Please. I haven't payed off my student loans and I don't want the loan mafia to kill my family.

I don't know about other families, but at least in MINE children at that age during those times where nothing like that... :P
To me those children were not reflecting real children (who - despite being innocent - tend to also be moderately egoistic, moody and stubborn), but rather the author's wishful thinking of what children SHOULD be like. As you say: Christian goody goody... :XP
(Needless to say, I found them to be the most annoying protagonists, too. Guess that's exactly why to me Golden Compass was so enjoyable - now, THOSE were children that were truly believe- and loveable!)
Someone mentioned Catti-brie. Yes, she WAS irritably annoying, but I have to admit that - at least for me - Drizzt managed to top her in the later volumes. In the beginning he was an ingenious, loveable character, but later on... ugh, when exactly did he drop the "chaotic" in "chaotic good"? :XP
(Yes, I really, really hate flat too-good-to-be-true characters.)
And then there's really stupid characters. You know, the typical "Oh my gosh, a serial killer is right behind me - let's leave behind the moderate safety of crowded areas and let's run into this conveniently dark, lonely backalley" idiots. Bleh! ;)
Protagonists that make mistakes are great - those that make outright STUPID mistakes are not! :XP

Bella Swan, who describes herself as plain and unworthy, but still manages to win the heart of every man in her school. Bella Swan, who wanders the city alone at night to get saved from inevitable rape. Bella Swan, the whore that doesn't want to rush her relationship with marriage, but wants to fuck a dead guy so much she does so anyways. =/
Then there's Edward Cullen, who's so charming every mom wants their daughter to bring one home. Oh, don't worry, mothers. I'm sure that someday, a dead man with body glitter will hang out and watch your daughters sleep at night. I'm sure that's the very first quality you look for in a potential son-in-law. Stalker skills.

I hate those black-and-white stories where you're either the most perfect little goody-goody two-shoes or absolutely abysmal! There are gray areas, you know!

@ Dystopia: I love you forever. Not gonna lie.
I only hate Johnny Depp's portrayal of Sweeney as a Protagonist. Helena Bonham Carter's Mrs Lovett, as well.
Sorry, I carry so much hate for that film. It shook my faith in Sondheim (he collaborated with Burton on the film) and Tim Burton, whose movies I love to death.

Marilla Cuthbert in Anne of Green Gables! Aaargh! She is SO freaking uptight and sour, she doesn't like anyone, old hag! No wonder she's still single! I almost want to say to her "Would it kill ya to have a sense of humor or imagination, lady?" She doesn't like Anne! Who the heck can have the heart to dislike Anne?! Oh, and Charlie Bucket in the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie! Ay-yi-freakin'-yi! He complains about his cabbage soup when that's all his family has, makes his grandparents think he got the ticket, then says "Fooled you, didn't I?" (which is not funny at all!), then when Violet chews the gum he asks his Grandpa "Why doesn't she listen to Mr. Wonka?" Pffft! Like he's one to talk, in the next scene HE steals the fizzy lifting drinks! All it takes for him regain favor with Wonka and get the factory is giving him the gobstopper. Urgh! *shakes fist* These two pissed me off! I wanted to kick both of them into a swamp and not tell them where a shower is! Oh yeah and don't even get me STARTED on Dora the Explorer! She is pure evil!!!
Here are some main protagonists I do like though:
1. Ella of Frell
2. Harry Potter
3. Herbie (who doesn't like that little car?!).

I have that exact issue with a very popular book series: Anita Blake.
I work in a bookstore, so I've heard from probably a hundred customers now (and a few fellow employees) about how GREAT the series is. So I decided to give it a whirl. Four books in, and I realized I couldn't stand the main character. She struck me as very whiny, constantly complaining about how no one would help her.
Ah! But then the vampires were like, "We'll help you." And Anita goes "I hate you. You can't help me." So then at the end when despite listing all her limitations she prevails with uber awesome powers, she sighs and states "No one helped me... I was all alone." And the vampires are like "What the HECK, lady??"
That was the impression I got anyways. XD
I've been told many times the series gets better as it goes along, but if I can't make myself care for the main character by the fourth book, then why bother?

I totally agree. And trust me, you're not missing anything. I just finished the fourth book last night so I can at least tell people who ask that yes, I've read the series in its entirety. The first book was enjoyable because it was addictive. Not very intelligently written... but a relaxing and fun read. Then we went to emosville in New Moon, Jacob became a huuuuge jerk in Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn was just... kinda weird. The ending got a tad more interesting, and I almost liked Jacob again.
Almost.
But yeah, throughout the series, I pretty much wanted to reach into the book and throttle Bella. Sometimes Edward too. (Breaking Dawn!)

I mean, sure they run off into the wardrobe where they weren't meant to go, but as children they befriend pretty much the whole area of Narnia, and win an epic battle with a messed up old witch.
Come ON.

I hope you read the book, because the movie is nothing like it. The children just whine the entire time in the movie.

<_< >_> Day 1: I'm sitting here tied to this chair watching the same re-runs of Hannah Montanna over and over again. I'm slowly, very slowly, detiorating from the inside out. ... It's cold. So very cold.. Hannah, how do you have the best of both worlds? How are you so perfect? Never a flaw. Everything always works out, you always win in the end. May I have your wig? And a picture of you handing it to me? Why? To sell on ebay, silly. And the picture's for proof! 8D ... NO?!
