Beowulf

  • I just saw this movie a few hours ago and I have to say that I like it, but I expected more of it. There was a lot of nudity in it so I'm glad I didn't see it in 3-D IMAX. I think it had a good plot but in the end I wanted more. I'm hoping there will be a second one... :3

Verisimility 11-18-2007 12:02 AM

I'm actually kind of afraid to go see it. On one hand, it's done by one of my favourite authors. On the other...I HATE the way they made it all...fake looking. :/

I WILL watch it, I know that...I'm just sort of afraid to!

`F o a m 11-18-2007 12:11 AM

  • Don't be scared. x]
    It's not scary at all.
It's more funny then scary. ;D

Peanut 11-18-2007 12:13 AM

  • It was too gory for me.
    Dx
And it even had a loop in it you could tell.
I bet Beowulf's friend who became king fell to the same fate, and it kept on till there was only the Demon Mother, and the current Demon Child.

Verisimility 11-18-2007 12:17 AM

Oh, no...I'm not afraid to watch it because I think it will be scary. I'm afraid to watch it because it looks really...cheesy? the way it's put together. And I don't want to think bad about my favourite author. Also, I don't know what to expect with the plot line. When I saw the first trailer for it a few months ago, I said, "Wow, that looks like a really stupid movie! They completely destroyed Beowulf." But then I found out that the whole thing was written and half produced by Neil Gaiman...so, in some ways I feel like I'm beholden to watch it because of him...but I'm still afraid it's going to be an awful movie.

Whew, rambling. :P

naruu 11-18-2007 12:22 AM

My parents want to see the movie, buuuut, I don't really like nudity. It still looks like a good movie none the less.

  • I smell a sequel. :]

Peanut 11-18-2007 12:27 AM

  • Naru:
The worst there is = cleavage and buttcheeks. xDD

    Foam:
    It'll fail. xDD

naruu 11-18-2007 12:34 AM

Is that all? O:
Okay, that's good. xD

Mikku 11-18-2007 12:36 AM

From the trailer, It looks like it's trying to be like 300...especially when he says 'I am Beowulf!', sounded a lot like 'this is Sparta!', doncha think?

Asahi Kumoru 11-18-2007 04:02 AM

Yeah, it was a little like "300" in that respect, lol XD

It was definitely a groundbreaking film with the whole idea of CGI done over everything, including the actors. And, as such, it had its flaws. I just hope that it'll turn out to be successful enough that other filmmakers will try the same method again and refine it in the process; I really think they're onto something.

Between the gore and the nudity, I was surprised it only managed to get off with a PG-13 rating. I think it was easily as violent as "300", and the computer graphics were definitely quite graphic. And there was some nudity, but I will point out that Beowulf did not even appear to have his wobbly bits rendered. There are buttcheeks, but a bit more than cleavage - they made Jolie look pretty naked. Go in and expect an R-type movie, I'd say ^^;

ljosberinn 11-18-2007 11:15 PM

  • I've seen the trailer a couple of times and I agree with Verisimility; I'm sort of afraid to see it because I'm not sure I'd like it - the technique doesn't seem to be refined enough so that I could enjoy it fully, I'm very nitpicky on technical stuff, but on the other hand, Neil Gaiman is one of my favourite authors as well and if he had something to do with it, I want to see it. But still. Blah.

I have to note though that he only wrote the screenplay, not the story. The story is based on an ancient English epic poem with the same name. Just.. in case. Some people don't know that sort of stuff.

Am I right in thinking that this is one of the movies you have to see in the theatre? Sort of looks like it is..

Water_Bender 11-18-2007 11:17 PM

i want to see it really badly in some 3-d theater you need 13 dollars to get it want to see it but to exspensive right now

Clair Voyant 11-18-2007 11:50 PM

@'F o a m- Haha! You must have a very good sense of smell! I really want to see this, but I plan on reading it first!

pillow_maiden 11-18-2007 11:57 PM

i dont really want to go see it, but i probably will end up seeing it, my cousin likes to drag me to the movies weather i want to see them or not, so i might jsut have to go see it.

Lolly 11-19-2007 02:49 AM

I really want to go see that movie.
@[email protected]<3
Although it did look fake, kind of during the previews.
Actually horribly fake.
Like "good graphic video game but you can tell it's fake" kinda way.
.-.
I actually thought it was a game for the new PS3 when I first saw the preview.
xD
Then I sat there at the end like "ohhhhh".
:B
Gore and Nudity don't really restrain me o____<

I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Exactly! I think I'm going to watch it, and if it's bad...conveniently forget that Neil had anything to do with it.

  • Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted to say.

    Verisimility, haha, sounds good. :Ð

Nightgaunt 11-20-2007 10:37 AM

I'm going to be the odd one out here: I saw it, and I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit. I think Mr Gaiman however was the only person who could have twisted the original Beowulf in that fashion and had me enjoy it as much as I did. I think the CG was quite good overall, save for the main female lead, who kind of annoyed me anyway...and well...
Maybe I'm kinda Biased but I don't find it too much of a stretch to cast Ms "Fishlips" Jolie as an nymphomaniac monster.
I am a fan of the original story, I've read it for fun and for class so I'm not just saying I liked it just because I didn't 'know any better'. I just...enjoyed it.
And personally, got a huge laugh out of the convenient Beowulf blocking objects for his nude scene.
I do admit I was very leery based on the previews, but I wasn't particularly disapointed.

Although if you want to see a -really- gouge-your-eyes-out bad version of Beowulf, there's one filmed some time ago by the guy who played Connor MacLeod from Highlander. That was one atrociously bad piece of film.

Cherry 11-20-2007 11:06 AM

It sounds pretty interesting, I might go see it but I rarely have time to go to the movies and never rent them so the chances are actually fairly slim.

Bunai 11-22-2007 06:16 AM

i would like to see it. it looks neat
but kind of pitiful

Trashcan Banker 11-22-2007 09:21 PM

It looks interesting, I might go check it out.

DreamEmpress 11-23-2007 02:37 AM

Amazing film and yes it is flawed but hell better then most realistic CGI films to date. Polar Express I will not account because it was more rotoscoped then taking the time to refine the animation. This film however went beyond just tracing the people, put giving them a complete transformation. Still it is a very hard thing to do but at least the people had character and the story had substance. I really enjoyed it.

Akstar 11-26-2007 11:59 PM

My mom and I want to see if due to it was animated by the group who did Polar express, yeah that is still is a hard to think thing for me and it still floors me.
