Monty Python's Flying Circus

So I was briefly reminiscing about great this show was, and how truly random, wacky, and daring it was for it's time (case in point, MP and The Holy Grail on DVD starts with a bogus film called Dentist on the Job, which I believe was described as representative of the kind of traditional comedy Monty Python provided an alternative to)... and then I realized, that show is STILL random, wacky, and daring compared to television today.

I wasn't born during the Monty Python heyday, to my great regret. However, I came into possession of most of the show's episodes on DVD (at least until I left them at my ex's house.) I've not seen ALL of it, but I've definitely seen enough to really want the rest of my set back!

So until then, I'll have to be satisfied by writing goofy threads about my worshipping of them ^^

So, questions;
What's your favorite Python movie?
Have you watched the show? What's your favorite episode? Sketch?
Who's your favorite performer?

I used to own the complete series, and it was my favorite for a long time, then I discovered "Black Adder" a much less known, but very quality British comedy show. :'3

Berginyon 12-14-2007 05:01 AM

Yes, I know of Blackadder... which reminds me, I've got to look around for that one too. Rowan Atkinson is awesome in that ^^

I wonder how many people are aware of who Hugh Laurie was before he was Dr. House? lol...

all I have to say is.."this bird is no more. it has seecced to be."

anyway good show. I miss it. even though it is on DVD. somewhere.

Pfft. "Dr. House"... >.>

Hugh Laurie will always for me be one half of Fry & Laurie, George the idiot, and Bertie Wooster.

Ah, and Python is supurb of course. I have seen all movies except the first, and I have watched most of the flying circus. Not seen some of the later episodes.

@ Usukie - it's "ceased". >w<

I love Monty Python! I grew up on it!

'And now for some full-frontal nudity!'

I haven't seen it in so long, but it's just so hilarious, I should look for it next time I have money.

Berginyon 02-24-2008 06:02 PM

I dunno how it worked for us exactly, but somehow we got a subscription to it where we got like three new episodes each week on DVD delivered to our house. So at one time I had all of them, but I left them at my ex's house, and haven't had the chance to go get em yet... lol

My first encounter with Monty Python was the Eric the Half a Bee song being played during a car journey. It must've been a collection of material and songs, but I just remember Eric... and I didn't know it was Monty Python till later. x]

Berginyon 02-24-2008 06:51 PM

Well I grew up with Monty Python and the Holy Grail; I wasn't aware of the fact that it was part of something bigger until I started hearing their sketches my dad had on a tape cassette, oddly enough while we were driving around in a car. Cheese Shop pretty much introduced me to Flying Circus, followed by Dead Parrot... when we were kids my bro and I would often do that last one to entertain the adults at parties. lol

Israfel 02-24-2008 09:12 PM

the Monty Python chaps are made of win and awesome, the sketch about the funniest joke in the world has me in stitches every time I see it. John Cleese is a wonderful actor, and his eulogy at Graham Chapman's funeral was great.

captainsavvy 02-26-2008 06:37 PM

They just don't make British comedy like they used to... lol

I love the Pythons.
Eric Idle was always my favourite. I loved the songs he sang (and the fact that he was the voice of Rincewind in the Discworld games ^_^).

I actually bought the Monty Python Sings album, including such classics as the "Lumberjack" song and "Sit On My Face" lol

I'm not sure which of the films is my favourite...
Holy Grail is always a good one :D
"I fart in your general direction, English Kniggits!"

I also have the "And Now For Something Completely Different". Surprisingly, there are a few sketches I'm fond of that aren't on it :?
I have yet to buy the entire series. I'm thinking it can be a birthday/christmas present lol

I also love Blackadder. I got the complete series including the christmas special and Blackadder Back and Forth (I first saw that at the Millenium Dome in London)
Also Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie are Gods amongst Kings in my book!

Aye, Monty Python is amazing. Just amazing. They always cheer me up, no matter the mood I'm in. I have all the episodes, and I'm still working through them. Their movies are great too... Haha, I have the holy grail on my ipod. xDDD I know it word-for-word, unfortunately. xP I haven't watched it for a while, though. I'd better do that... O.o;

Lanackse 03-02-2008 11:54 AM

I have the Holy Grail, Meaning of Life, and Do Not Adjust Your Set on DVD. I don't have Life of Brian as far as I know.

I also have Jabberwocky, which is the solo release from Terry Gilliam.

Do Not Adjust Your Set was the Python's first release onto the world with a young David Jason. It's in black and white and I can't quite get some of the jokes but it's still good stuff.

Berginyon 03-02-2008 02:48 PM

@Lanackse

Ever happen to see something called "How To Irritate People" with John Cleese? I think that's one of the first bits of material Cleese, Chapman and Palin worked on before forming Python. And it's funny as hell too. Look it up on Youtube... particularly the airplane sketch :P

@ - k i w i

On your Ipod? The whole thing? Interesting. I've been putting off buying one for a while... is the quality of video any good?

@ - captainsavvy

Have you ever seen the stuff they've had on TV in the last few years? Look up The Mighty Boosh if you want to see something utterly weird and funny... there's another skit based one my bro likes, but I can't remember it. You might also like Fry and Laurie, which is also skit based. This is what Hugh Laurie did for a living before he became Dr. House :P

@ - Israfel

Ja, I love the funniest joke in the world... appropriate that the German 'translation' of it is actually just a bunch of gibberish... lol

I VANT TO KNOW ZEE YOKE!!!

k i w i 03-02-2008 06:38 PM

Hehe, yup. The whole thing. Even the begining llama credits. >w< <3
I think the video quality is great... Small, but great. I love my ipod, it goes wherever I do. n.n
They're definately worth the money, in my opinion. I have the 30gig video, 5th generation. Then again, I've heard great things from the cheaper knock-offs.

Berginyon 03-05-2008 10:23 PM

I wonder if you still have the 'film that's deemed more appropriate for audiences' at the beginning? Or maybe that's a DVD only release... lol

Heiroglyphica 03-05-2008 11:27 PM

I really love Monty Python, though I don't watch it much. My girlfriend and I have different opinions on whether it's Monty Python or Mr. Bean that's good or sucky. ^.^;;
