Do you look for a good plot, famous actors, etc? Post your thoughts.
When I look at movies, the ad/dvd cover/movie poster/trailer need to really grab my attention! I don't really care who is acting in it though. I do like modernized movies, not really a classics fan, and an intriguing plot is great as well. My genres range from action to comedy and of course romance, a girl can't keep those chick flicks away, even if it induced tears T_T
lol. Ok I wanna hear from you guys

I look for either great comedy, brilliant actors, hot actors, or a tear-jerker.

Good acting, that's mainly what I look for in movies. I really like semi-historical films, or films that base on controversy and stuff. But mostly really good acting.

I don't watch many movies. Usually I watch movies based on books I've read, and often I regret it. Otherwise if I see a trailer that I find interesting or funny then I'll try and watch the movie.
There are definitely actors/actresses/directors that can draw me to a movie, and some who can turn me off of a movie. For example I'll watch anything directed by Tim Burton, and I tend to avoid movies with people like Lindsay Lohan.

Usually for a movie I need it to have all the good stuff and more specifically I mean plot, writing, acting, etc. As for what genre I prefer I'd say comedy and fantasy are my two favorites but I love a good suspense/mystery movie as well. Ones that I can't easily figure out the ending to but don't confuse me to where it's almost too hard to watch. ><; Movies I don't watch are gore and horror because if it's just to show how many ways to kill a person and have a crap story it's not worth seeing. Over excessive anything puts me off.
And the comedy has to actually be funny, not stupid. ><; *reference: Epic movie = retarded*

Famous actors don't guarantee much these days. Sure names are nice, but it doesn't mean quality all the time. For me there has to be originality and integrity in the script and idea all together, you can have a fantastic concept and just turn it into the biggest pile of, well, crap when it's in the wrong hands.
I want a movie to take me somewhere I've never been before, make me think about things I've enver thought about, or at least be exciting and not too cliche(this is strictly in terms of action movies). I really want to be pulled in and not let go of until the credits roll, when I don't check my watch once, that's a good movie.
Personally I'm really into artsy stuff, and have ridiculously high standards when it comes to the movies, so I generally hate just about everything coming out of hollywood these days. The last thing I really want to see is a Japanese horror film that has been shllocked down to baby food to be hand fed to an american audience *cough*the eye*cough*. I don't want to see another movie with Paris Hilton, nor am I interested in another saw movie. This whole preoccupation with remakes and sequals and prequels has really got to go, it's getting painful at this point. I makes me sad in my heart of hearts :(

Hawt sex scenes and gorey violence.
No, um, I don't know. I know if something has an actor I like I then want to see it. But whatever catches my eyes. Suspenseful ones with a twist seem to do it.

Tim Burton seems to know how to build up good characters, good plot, and how to grab your attention. Yes he did do a turkey or two but name someone that hasn't.
I like to be able to say "wow that was a well done movie" rather then "wow look what the effects guys did". Yes they're necessary for some things but I think they're overused these days and seem to come above a decent plot.
X-Men may have used special effects, but it blended seamlessly with the story, which was very accurate according to a friend of mine who has a load of their comics.
Yes I agree with the shoddy remaking of Japanese horror films. Saw "The Ring" (Remake of Ringu) and then the original Japanese version and I have to say that the Americans did a *snip* job. I saw the trailer for anther one and thought "this looks like a load of crap"

The type of film I watch depends on the type of mood that I'm in. I generally lean towards action, science fiction, or comedy most of the time.
When my hormones are going crazy, I love watching chick flicks and musicals. Cartoons are also good when I'm feeling rather dark and moody.
The only types I can think of that I don't care for are horror and "tragic" drama. I can handle some of the lighter dramas, but the epic dramatic tragedies, I can rarely watch more than once (if I can stand to watch them once). War movies of the drama class, especially, traumatize me.

Well, the things that pull me in are trailers and such. If the trailer looks good, then I'll probably see it. A movie that promises a nice monster always draws me in as well, though I'm normally disappointed in that case. xD
I really don't care much about actors. If the trailer for it looks like crap, I really don't care if Johnny Depp is in it, I'm not seeing it. At least not until I can read some reviews and, preferably, hear what my friend's say about it.
I'd also prefer for it to have good special effects. Of course, that shouldn't be all the movie is about, but a nice action movie with good actors and a good plot can instantly turn into a pitiful comedy if they're obviously fighting dummies or men in rubber monster suits. xD I can deal with it in older films, but not so much for the new ones.
I also like films that can draw me into the movie and make me feel for the characters. When someone dies, I want to cry. When the hero kisses the girl in the end of the movie, I want to be happy for them. When the 'bad guy' is on screen, I want to dislike him or her. However, there is such a thing as making a bad guy too bad. xD I don't want to hate someone so much that I stop the movie/walk out of the theater just because I can't stand them and think the main actors incredibly stupid for taking so long to get rid of them.
So I guess what I look for is balance? I want good actors, but not people who overact. I want good effects, but that shouldn't be the whole movie. I want to feel for people, but I don't want to become depressed when someone dies.

as long as it has good actors, good plot and a good budget I'm happy. I am a simple person. I recently watched meet the spartans and lost interest probably because of the bad plot and low budget.

I look for anything that catches my eye. Not very much does, so I don't really go to the movies very often unless it's something my boyfriend wants to see (and I have to say, I've been pleasantly surprised by some good movies that I had no interest in whatsoever before seeing it, all because he wanted me to come see the movies with him). The latest ones that caught my eye were The Golden Compass, and Jumper. Surprise, surprise, both of them were adaptations from books (I work at a bookstore, so when things get turned into movies, I'll often go see the movie before reading the book, just to see what it's about on the big screen before diving into a seven hour book).
I don't go by who's in the movie because I don't know the name of many actors or actresses. I know a few, like Morgan Freeman (if I'm even spelling his name correctly anyways), and Cillian Murphy, but mostly when someone will say an actor's name, I'll just stare at them blankly, asking "well, what have they been in?". I'll remember faces before remembering names, because I just don't care about the people that play in the movies enough to know anything at all about them. If they've been in a few movies I like, I'm more likely to remember their name or whatever, but it's still not for sure, because I don't exactly go searching the web for names of people in movies.
Anyways though, enough of that rant, since it's going nowhere. ^^;

What I look for is something that's different. Something that's really out there, and seems like it would be next to impossible to make it any good because the idea is just so damn ODD.
Those usually end up being my favorites, just because there's nothing out there like them. XD And even where they are as bad as they sound (and most are at a point or two)...generally even the craziest-sounding movie has its bright points.
It also never hurts if there's a name in there that I'm familiar with and I KNOW is good. Not particularly the actors, though (though they do HELP); the directors and writers are more important, because they're the ones who somehow or another MAKE the crazy idea work. Certain names can also tell me to avoid a given movie like the plague (I will NEVER watch a film where Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, or Paris Hilton is a main character...EVER).
But the main point is...I like different. I like something that will leave me with my brain imploding if I try to summarize the plot and make it sound half as good as it really was. In fact, I have never seen an ACCURATE summary of my favorite movie, because it would just sound so WEIRD - not on the site where I bought the DVD, or even on the back of the DVD case! They've ALL had some false or misleading information. But anyway, that's not the point. XD The point is...for me, different, wild, out-there is GOOD.
You will NEVER catch me watching a gore/human torture movie, though, no matter HOW crazy or different it is; the idea of people finding that ENTERTAINING just...sickens me. It really does. And I hate most romance-centered stories unless they have something else to grab my attention.

Good acting doesn't matter as much to me as a good plot or good cinematography.
I love a movie with what I will call "the whole package" - a good story, beautiful visuals, great special effects, great character design and depth, and a captivating musical score.

For me it's mainly the plot that draws me in. If the premise seems like a really cool or interesting idea, I'm there. Also, if its based on a book or something I'm familiar with then I will absolutely watch (even it they butcher it I still will have something to mock).
Actors are kinda secondary for me. Thats not to say that a good movie can't be ruined by bad acting or that there aren't actors and actors or actresses that would influence me to watch that paticular movie. Morgan Friedman, Sean Conarray, Will Smith, Harrison Ford, Kierra Knightly, and Summer Galu are a few that I would definatly want to give a movie a chance just to see.
Good visuals also help. I love costumes and character designs. Beautiful sets and backrounds are wonderful as well.
For genre I usually go for action, fantasy, and comedy. Chick flicks usually just annoy me. I nit pick them to much.

I love action movies, space movies, a good horror flick works well. I have a weakness for sword fighting. I am the one who is captivated by cheesy movies like Conan the Barbarian lol. When I say horror flicks I don't mean this new crop of movies, I want to be scared not nauseous. (Saw? Seven? no thank you).
Martial arts movies are excellent, lol ok so my list of what I like is pretty long

i don't watch a huge amount of movies. usually it's the plot that interests me or it's an adaption of a book or visa versa. if it's a horror movie, i'm not going to watch it. i find they tend to have somewhat repetitive storylines. kind of like korean dramas/soap operas. almost all of them include two lovers, one of them getting in some kind of accident, losing their memory, falling for someone that they actually didn't like. yeah. kinda get the point. anyhow. actors also influence my choices. paris hilton or lindsay lohan are like at the top of my "no thank you" list. oh and budget. epic movie. remember that? looked kinda cool in the trailer but i watched probably one fourth of it and was like "kaythxbye" it was pretty bad. if it's a comedy there's a bigger chance of me of watching it. good animation/art too. like paprika or ghilbi (sp?) studio stuff. also. rotten tomatoes. probably wouldn't of watched "the host" but since it was fresh i watched it. pretty good. except the dvd was scratched :<
