Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight

I've been a huge fan of Weiss and Hickman ever since I picked up a copy of 'Forging the Darksword' when I was in high school. I had no idea that it would lead into a whole world of books that would fascinate me and the world to no end. One series of their books: Dragonlance. Possibly their best selling series.

Recently, a book in the Dragonlance series was made into an animated movie. Combining 2D characters and backgrounds with 3D dragons. At first I was very edgy about this film. I heard about it for years and I was very against it. I loved the image of the characters that I had in my head and I never wanted to lose them. But as time went and I looked into it more, I got captured by the lovely DVD cover art and the character sketches.

Then the time came. January 15th, 2008. The DVD release of one of the best Dragonlance books. Dragonlance: Dragonsof Autumn Twilight. Just last night I picked a copy up and looked it over. Lovely cover art, decent looking Raistlan on the cover, and a few big names in the cast listing: Kiefer Sutherland, Lucy Lawless, and Michael Rosenbaum. Cool.

Took this copy home, watched it and got more than I expected.

Horrible 3D, wood like characters, low budget voice acting, cheesy spell casting, bad effects, and strange noises. But I loved every second of it. To see one of my favorite books played out and to hear Raistlin's voice. It was amazing. It proves that bad animation and low-standard voice acting doesn't matter. It was wonderful. To get to see a Kender say 'I didn't steal it, you dropped it. You should be thanking me for picking it up for you,' simply wonderful.

Everyone that likes Dragonlance should see this movie.

One of my friends is a huge fan of Dragonlance and got this movie a couple weeks ago. Recently he brought it over for us to watch. The only reason I wanted to see it was because Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Marsden voiced in it. XD
The movie sucked big time, the 3D parts were very awkward and the art looked like it was done back in the 80's. Can't say much for the story because I haven't read Dragonlance and....Don't want to. XD I did like Lord of the Rings and I'm sure the authors of DL are great guys but I can't stand this kind of concept. Too over done. I'll stick to being addicted to anime and Gears of War. But I did enjoy Jason Marsden's character for a few of his lines...no matter how cheesy. *a.k.a the kender race whose name escapes me. ><;*
Originally this movie was suppose to be big and live action, Kiefer actually got gold contacts and was willing to wear a silver wig or make his hair silver. Now that I would've flipped out for since you don't see him in a lot of fantasy films...Unless you want to count Lost Boys. Too bad the budget fell through. T^T

Jason Marsden played the voice of Tasslehoff Burrfoot. Kenders are amazing little creatures. Like Hobbits, but without furry feet, don't feel fear or grief, and have a knack for stealing things.

Anyways...I prefer Dragonlance to Lord of the Rings. It's just more fun to read. The one the movie was based off of is in no way the best of the series. I believe that Soulforge is. It's less fantasy (like dragons and such). It's the childhood and life of Raistlin (Kiefer Sutherland's character). It explains in depth why he is the way he is.

But if you think that the concept is too over done, then you might enjoy their other works instead. Darksword Trilogy, Sovrieng Stone Trilogy, Rose of the Prophet Trilogy, and Death Gate Cycle (seven books). More so the Darksword books if you're bored with Dragons and such but still want fantasy. ^_^

Over all, I liked the movie because it was rather true to the story in the book and it was nice to see that they stayed so close to how the characters should look. But a live action would of been so much better. I wanted to see Lucy Lawless kick some butt again. ^_^

**Bleh...had to edit the post twice already...I need to proof read...

Yeah! Tasslehoff was pretty cool so I was able to bear with him and Raistlin. <3 I would've liked to know more in depth about Raistlin because in the beginning they were kind of mean to him by saying he was an evil wizard and he had this look of, "Now hold on a sec! Cheap shot!" But it's...ok, I just wish their budget was bigger for at least better animation or something. I would've loved to see Lucy Lawless in action as well. >w< Death Gate Cycle sounds like an interesting series, I may have to check that one out to see what you mean.

I am the friend MasterChief was referring to. The Dagonlance book series was one of the best book series I have ever come across. And Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis are brilliant and I love their work. The movie that was made was rushed and I thought that it just didn’t do the book justice. It was cool to see the Dagonlance world in motion but the movie would be really crappy if you did not read the books. Like I said, I love Dagonlance and am a huge fan of Weis and Hickman. If there is a sequel to the movie I will be the first to buy it but I do not recommend it to newcomers to the Dagonlance realm. If you are interested, please, read the books! They are fantastic :!:

Dragonlance is great, but I much more prefer the four Darksword books. They were the first of Weis and Hickman that I read. Time of the Twins, War of the Twins, and Test of the Twins being the second of theirs.

The movie was horrible for a newcomers standards. It puts a bad impression on people that haven't had a chance to read the books and understand more about the characters and what is going on. The movie needed more polishing and should of taken longer to make so they could work more on the details. But for what it was, it wasn't that bad. I've seen worse. Much worse. I'm sure most people have.

I personally would love to see a Soulforge movie or a Wanderlust movie. Mostly because Raistlin and Tass are my two favorite characters...third being Dalamar. But I don't want a Dalamar the Dark movie.

Death Gate Cycle is interesting and hard to read at times if you don't pay attention. Seven books about seven worlds that used to be one. Each of these worlds holds a specific race (in the simplest terms. A few other races here and there). The Fire Sea one was one of the best. It's about the Dwarves.

The worlds are being explored by a man named Haplo who is being instructed by his Lord Nexus. Their race was exiled to the Labyrinth for a number of reasons. Haplo and Lord Nexus being the only two to make it out alive in quite some time.

Very good books. I've read all them, but only own 5 out of the 7. Missing books 2 and 3. V_V

I bought the movie out of a wim and when I first saw it... well, I was yelling outloud in the house how bad it was. The 3D mixed with 80s 2D characters was horrible, most of the scenes were messed up or else inaccurate to the book and they completly changed how they got out of the slave place (forgot the name) AND they cut out a lot of the good parts (Tas mocking Flint in the cave, the wicker dragon...). I was also a little upset at the person who did Tas' voice at first...

After I watched it a few more times, I find it a decent movie to watch if you're bored. Not a good movie for newcomers but for old Dragonlance fans like me, it was okay. I did end up liking Tas' voice (mainly because of the actor {Full House, Static Shock}) and you can ignore the little hicups in the movie.

Overall, I give it a 3/5... but, that's just me.

What I REALLY wish they would have done was WAIT a little longer and do a live-action one... like Lord of the Rings. But, that's just me.

...Tasslehoff rules!

I don't think I plan on getting the movie you are all talking about, but I would love it so much if it got a live action movie that is lord of the rings quality. Unfortunately I doubt it would ever be granted a budget large enough to do it complete justice.
