Dragon Ball Movie -Big Updated 4/9/08- Screen Shots (kinda)

Newest updates at the bottom of this post!!!

As some may already know, this is for the ones that don't. All the Menewsha that grew up watching Dragon Ball in the mornings and Sailor Moon after school...this is for you:

April 3, 2009...Dragon Ball- The Movie. Live Action. The King Piccolo Saga. (The release date has been pushed back for a year. Sadly...No reasons as to why yet though. If this changes, I will update again)

Trailer Information: None.

Reason for change of release date from August 15, 2008 to April 3, 2009 :
"The film is being delayed due to the need of more time for special effects and what not" - IMDB

Director:
James Wong (The One)
Writers:
Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball Comic, also Dr. Slump)(Rumored to be fired from the project. Look at the bottom of this post for more information. I will update more as I get more information on this)

Ben Ramsey (Dragon Ball Movie Adaptation, also wrote Love and a Bullet and The Big Hit)

That's right. Fox films (the ones that brought us X-men III) is bringing us another childhood favorite into real life. They bought the rights for a film a few years ago and then dropped the project, but as of December 2007 they began to film it. There is no trailer yet (no real one at least. Any that you have seen are 100% fakes. Along with any so called screen shots. All are fake. None have been released into the public as of yet), but there is a cast listing. It is also being shot currently in Mexico where the girl playing Bulma is having a hell of a time learning to drive a motorcycle in the sand.

Plot Spoiler (kind of. Credits go to IMDB):

[Based on] The King Piccolo Saga [Dragonball], also known as the Piccolo Daimaoh Saga (Demon Lord Piccolo Saga) is the penultimate saga from the anime Dragonball. It occurs after the Tien Shinhan Saga and precedes the Piccolo Junior Saga. It includes the battles between Goku and King Piccolo's sons, Goku's first encounter with the Samurai warrior, Yajirobe, Goku's quest to find the Holy Water, his final battle with young King Piccolo, and the birth of Piccolo Junior.

More in depth plot summary I found on Wikipedia: (more of a Marsters comment on the storyline and what not)
Marsters explained that this incarnation of the character was "thousands of years old and a very long time ago he used to be a force of good, but [he] got into a bad argument and was put into prison for 2,000 years. It got him very angry, and he finds a way to escape and then tries to destroy the world. The cool thing is, anybody who has seen Dragonball knows that Lord Piccolo transforms into a character named Piccolo, and that is a whole other ball of wax. [...] Heroic wouldn't be the wrong term by the end, but it's a long journey." He also confirmed Piccolo will retain his physical appearance from the anime.

The Cast:
Justin Chatwin - Goku(War of the Worlds)

James Marsters - King Piccolo/Junior Piccolo (Most famous in the US as the role of Spike from TVs Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel)

Yun-Fat Chow - Master Roshi (No introduction needed I would hope)

Emmy Rossum - Bulma (The Phantom of the Opera and The Day After Tomorrow. According to her blogs, she is overly excited to play this role)

Jamie Chung - Chi Chi (The Real Life)

Eriko Tamura - Mai (Best known in the US for Heroes as Yaeko, one of Hiro's romantic elements)

Randall Duk Kim - Grandpa Gohan (Memoirs of a Geisha and The Matrix Reloaded)

Texas Battle - Unknown Role Yet (Final Destination 3 & Wrong Turn 2: Dead End)

Shavon Kirksey - Emi (rumored) (Private Practice & Grey's Anatomy)

Luis Arrieta - Teto (El Ride) This character was made for the movie and is not from the show or manga. He is to be one of Goku's school friends.

Ernie Hudson - Alter Boy (No Pictures yet) (Ghostbusters)

Yamcha will be there too played by Joon Park. I put no picture up of him because he doesn't deserve the part at all. Much, much better people tried out the role. Joon Park has no experince except for being an American Idol reject. James Kyson Lee deserved the part of Yamcha and he did try out for it. He has the goofy smile, the pretty boy look, and a nice build. James Kyson Lee plays Ando on the show Heroes. Joon Park is starting off his acting career in this movie of all movies. I hope it ruins him. (I obviously have issues with him being Yamcha. Please don't comment on that).

Will all the major characters from the anime, such as Krillin, Tien, and Chaouzu be in this film? Answer: It is not known as of yet.

Now...Why am I posting all this? Because I am a hardcore DB and DBZ fan. I'm actually looking forward to this movie for two reasons. James Marsters. I think he could do wonderfully for Piccolo. Secondly, I am a hardcore DB and DBZ fan. I am obligated to see the movie and that gives me rights to rant about it. I've been waiting for this thing since Fox Films got the rights for it a few years ago.

For those that don't know, this is NOT the first Dragon Ball Live Action movie. In 1989 they came out with: Xin qi long zhu (roughly translated it means: Dragonball: The Magic Begins). I have seen this movie. Why? Cause I am a hardcore DB and DBZ fan. I was obligated to watch it. It ranks as number one for worst movie I have ever seen, right there next to Cloverfield. While it is called Dragonball and does have a Goku, Yamcha, Chi Chi, Bulma, and Roshi...they are not after Dragonballs, they are after Dragon Pearls. Apparently a big difference to fans of this movie.

Plot Summary (Credit goes to IMDB):

This live-action version of the popular Japanese animated series Dragon Ball. A villainous king known as Emperor Horn has stolen the mystical power of the "Dragon Pearls" in an attempt to possess them all and rule the world! When all but one of the pearls has been stolen, the former rag-tag group of guardian heroes (led by Goku) of the mysterious magic jewels decides to band together and take some big action! Led by a pig-headed wizard and a half-turtle martial arts master, the team first takes on King Horn's army in a desperate bid to stop him from gaining control of the Dragon Pearls.

Discuss:
~Live Action DB movie
~Do you think it will be good or bad?
~The Cast
~What kinds of graphics do you think they will use?
~Joon Park over James Kyson Lee (I will never let this down)
~The original DB movie that came out a LONG time ago

***I have some sad news to tell. Mr. Akira Toriyama has been fired from the movie. He wanted too much control over it and Fox gave him the ax. He wanted it to be filmed with only Asian actors, filled in Japan, and filmed in the Japanese language and then dubbed for the United States. Fox explains that America bought rights to make an American film. They hope that Mr. Toriyama will come back to the project, but as of right now he has no more control over it.***

This information was found in a post on IMDB, a Yahoo DB movie site, and a few other google sites. I haven't found pure confirmation of this yet, so it is subject to change in the future. But it is looking as Mr. Toriyama is gone from the DragonBall Movie.

4/8/2008 updates! Holy Batman. They have so much. I fell so far behind with my vacation! But a girl has got to rest. Anyways, on with the updates. We have Screen shots...they are fuzzy, but you'll get the point. Oh...and a peek at Marster's outfit. It's not the traditional King Piccolo. Think more evil and sexy looking.

1.) Fuzzy Screen Shots! [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ] [ X ]

2.) Super Top Secret Piccolo Outfit Of Semxyness! [ X ]
Quote from Outfit Maker Ed: "“I can say that it was a 4 hour make-up that I applied many times over a month and a half andthat James Marsters was a very pleasant and professional actor to work with. In fact, I enjoyed working with him more than
any actor I’ve applied prosthetic make-up to. He was very patient and enthusastic about playing the role and I admired his work. […] Publicity pictures were taken for advertising and i’m sure they will release them soon.”"

3.) Possibly another release date push back. V_V
"20th Century Fox continues to play ping pong with the release date of the manga adaptation “Dragonball”. The film, which was originally slated for an August 15th 2008 release was recently moved to April of 2009. “We realize that April just didn’t work out for us.” says a Fox Spokesperson. “September looks like a better month and that’s what we’re going with.”

end update.

This is a fan made site. Not made by me. It's a simple little forum for the DragonBall Movie.

http://dbthemovie.com/forum/

This is a gallery of set pictures. No official pictures of people in the movie (in costume and such yet)

http://dbthemovie.com/gallery/main.php

Wikipedia information about the movie and the parts the characters will play: (All credit goes to Wikipedia. Nothing is mine. The link is at the end of the post)

Justin Chatwin as Goku: The hero of the film.

James Marsters as Lord Piccolo: The antagonist of the film.

Jamie Chung as Chi-Chi: Goku's love interest.

Emmy Rossum as Bulma: She aids Goku after her father's Dragonball is stolen by Piccolo.

Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi: Goku's mentor.

Joon Park as Yamcha. James Kyson Lee auditioned for the role.

Eriko Tamura as Mai: She is a chief enforcer of Piccolo's and a shapeshifter. (She's not working for the Emperor! OhNoes!)

Texas Battle has an unrevealed role.

Luis Arrieta as Teto: A classmate and friend of Goku.

Randall Duk Kim as Grandpa Gohan: The adoptive father and grandfather of Goku who teaches Goku everything he knows about martial arts.

Ernie Hudson will play an altar boy in a temple who will aid Goku and his friends.

The singer Mario was turned down for a part in the film.

The anthropomorphic talking animals (such as Oolong and Puar) were dropped.

Rossum will wear a blue wig to resemble her anime counterpart.

In June 2004, Ben Ramsey, who wrote The Big Hit (1998), was paid $500,000 to adapt Dragon Ball Z.

OMG
I heard roomers about it but man I hope they do a good job but I saw the Hong Kong or was it Japanese version from a friend and it was bad really bad.

The PyroKittie 02-05-2008 04:06 AM

The original live movie was just...wrong on so many levels. Even for 1989 they could of done a better job with that one.

But this one from what I hear has a decent sized budget, a good cast (excluding Joon Park), and I hear that they are going to stick as closely as possible to character looks. Though Justin Chatwin will not be wearing a wig as the director thought his hair was tall enough as it is and since there will be no Super Sayians because it's not DBZ. Piccolo will be green, bald, and with pointy ears. Bulma will have her Blue/green hair.

So long as the graphics are low cost, then I think it shouldn't be too bad. Dialog is what will kill them though.

fiarra 02-05-2008 04:37 AM

The black guy from Ghostbusters is apparently also in the cast of the movie, but they haven't disclosed his part yet.

The whole thing just amuses me and I will probably just go see it for the lulz.

The PyroKittie 02-05-2008 04:46 AM

Ernie Hudson. O_O

Oh dear...Only part I can see him as is Mr. PoPo. And from what I've read on the rumors for that, that's what everyone else seems to think too. That should be...interesting. I hadn't really thought of characters other than the main ones.

This is what I found when I googled it:

Rumored Ernie Hudson in Dragonball Movie.

catghost 02-05-2008 04:46 AM

Finally! A DB movie thread. XD
I've been following this ever since it was posted on TV.com, I really can't wait!

I also heard that Goku will be going to school in this movie..
Maybe they can somehow make it work?
XD;;

The only thing that worries me right now is the cast.... and how Piccolo will look.

Amurita 02-05-2008 04:49 AM

Wow, i don't know how they're going to pull off a good live action for dragonball. I want it to be good, since i did grow up watching the show...but i just can't imagine them as real people.
I hope it turns out better than i expect.
I really wonder how piccolo is gonna turn out. That will be on interesting costume to see.

The PyroKittie 02-05-2008 04:53 AM

I'd heard that too about Goku going to school. I know they said it will be futuristic-ish to stay with the original setting...but Goku in school? Not a big fan of that...Oh I forgot to put up the cast list for Grandpa Gohan. I need to fix that.

The only things that worry me about this movie are:

1.) F-ing Joon Park
2.) Graphics
3.) Dialog.

I've seen a lot of James Marsters work and I really think he can pull off Piccolo. I found a picture of him on IMDB with his arms crossed and a green light put on him...it just says 'I am Piccolo' all over it. (not literally, but it should)

Smellerbee 02-05-2008 05:02 AM

Why is Goku a white guy?

The PyroKittie 02-05-2008 05:06 AM

Cause Goku was never Asian to begin with. He's an alien anyways. He can be any nationality they cast him as so long as the skin color is close enough to that in the manga/anime.

MelonFairy 02-05-2008 05:17 AM

Who dude nice~! I hella wanna see this >=) I'm going to be so amused~ I definitely going to see this for Lolz~ If I don't laugh my ass off through it, I'm going to watch it over and over again~ just the thought of it is killing me XD I hope the graphics are gonna be good XP

I wanna see James go from Spike to Piccolo XD~~ I can't wait~

The PyroKittie 02-05-2008 05:28 AM

I'm going to see it in theater. I must see this on a big screen. It's a must.

Seeing James Marsters in anything is a good thing. Whether he does it good or bad. Just seeing him is worth at least half the ticket price. More so if he's killing people. Just adds to the sexyness that is him.

*had a thing for Spike back in the day*

Wanna know how big of a Spike/DBZ dork I am?

The man that did the German Voice for Spike in the one episode of Angel when they are talking about when Spike was a Nazi. That voice actor for Spike also did Voice Acting for Vegeta on occasions.

I'm a dork and proud of it.

But Spike was awesome. If he does manage to screw up Piccolo though, I don't think I could forgive him. I care more about Piccolo than I do Spike. Cause I'm a dork.

OBJECTION 02-05-2008 05:59 AM

When I heard rumors of this movie I thought the people telling me were crazy. But after I heard it was a fact, I don't know how excited I am to see it. I will see it, if only for nothing else than James play Piccolo who is my second favorite DB/DBZ character after Vegeta. Personally, I think James can knock the role out of the park, only because Spike was so much like Piccolo in my opinion.

I really have no idea who any of the other people are except for Ernie Hudson, but here's hoping that they'll do good. And I'll have to check out the other DBZ movie if only for the lulz.

Astromantic 02-05-2008 06:01 AM

...No freakin' way. o___o; My boyfriend and I are die-hard Dragon Ball fans. A live action movie based off of one of my childhood obsessions? An American live action movie, at that!

The idea of it freaks me out. Like every other movie I had seen where I had read the book first or seen it as an earlier version, my mind will be set on comparing it to what I had already known.

Who knows, I may be dead wrong. I may actually love the movie if I ever see it. But still, the idea right now isn't something I'm very excited about. I don't think I'm even over that rumor (or maybe it is true?) of the American Live Action Sailor Moon with Lindsay Lohan as the lead title role. Now that is scary.

V!rtual Insanity 02-05-2008 08:24 AM

I was going to make a thread about this awhile ago, but never got the chance to. So I'm glad you did. :)

Anyway, I love Justin Chatwin, but I was worried about him playing Goku at first. I just couldn't see him playing that part. But I'm still excited! And if he thinks he can pull it off, I guess I'll trust him. I wonder who will play Trunks though...

No one will play Trunks. He won't be around. It's a Dragon Ball movie, not Dragon Ball Z. Sorry, no hot live action Trunks.

IMDB doesn't have a listing for that, so let's pray it isn't real. Then again, IMDB doesn't have a listing for the live Zelda movie either. But that's cause it's being independently made. So unless Lohan is going to play the part for no money and with a script written by people with no experience, I doubt there will be a Live Sailor Moon with Lohan in it. I will forgo any love for Sailor Moon if it does happen in the future though.

*^#%@ing dies...*

WHAT THE HELL!?!!?!!11???/??

Alright i thought this was some kind of joke, i seriously did... but i guess this confirms it

James... friggin... marsters... And where the hell is krillin?!?! Who are they gonna kill in every movie if they DONT have krillin?! AHHH!!!!

...on the other hand, if they do it right and keep production up they could make a pretty cool series of movies, and its being directed by the same guy who directed the one... so it'll be visually impressive... ok, i'm cool now as lon...g as...

FOX IS MAKING AN A-TEAM MOVIE?!?!?!

*is now dead*

Wow, I think that would be totally cool to see. I can't wait till they get a real trailer up to see!

I'm also a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer so I know of James Marsters quite well. I think it would be interesting to see him play Piccalo. I think he could pull it off quite well...

James Marsters rocks. I am a firm believer that he will make a great Piccolo and I have great faith in the director. I love The One and he made that.

As for Krillin. It's been confirmed that there will be a Krillin, but I've seen no cast listing for him as of yet. Cause you can't have DB without Krillin. Someone has to get their butt kicked and/or die. Though my source for the comfirmation is not a great one. I won't post a listing for him at all till I know 100%.

Well, if this one pulls in enough money, then I'm sure they will make more. But I doubt it would have much of Trunks in it. The only saga that he's in a lot is the Cell Saga (the worst of the sagas in my opinion). If they do a DBZ movie it will most like be"

Saiyan Saga (I'm rooting for this one. Love me some Raditz and Vegeta)
Frieza Saga
or
Buu Saga
