Movies and Television are Lazy Reading!

That is my opinion. Think about it: when you read, YOU get to decide what the characters look like, what their surroundings look like, etc. Most movies that are made based on books are poor, and leave out important details. This prevents the viewer from getting the entire picture. Also, watching movies does not challenge and strengthen a person's mind the way reading does. What's your opinion? Please be respectful.

Very true.
Reading streatches your imagination, thats what I believe. I don't really care what the movie characters look like, I depend on the book description.

books still give you guidelines as to what characters and places should look like, and what about all of the movies and television shows that *aren't* based on books? Yes, I agree, that by and large movies from books are hideous representations of the actual thing, but each has it's place, and it's really only... lazy, if the person is one of those people who never reads.

I agree, I like watching movies, but if it's based on a book I'll always try to read the books first. However, I do like movies. Sometimes it's good to just relax and let your mind have some time off, and some books out there (harry potter for example) are written for a young audience so the writing style makes your eyes bleed if you're say an english student at college, but the films allow you to witness the story without getting side tracked by the writing. You find that a lot in childrens stories or really old novels. Such as I'd love to see a child read Dickens, but a cristmas carol is simply magic and is best enjoyed by children. And Harry Potter was writen for children but the story interest adults too.

Both have a time and place and I hope you understand that they both have their posatives and negatives.

There is no comparison between the two things one is intended for making your imagination blow and the other one is related with getting the director's view on the book (if it is the case) and it is interesting to see how someone interprets the idea...
though I recomend both read the book and watch the movie after that =)

I like TV and movies for being very visual, but I like books because they tend to be more varied in their storylines and so on.

I don't think visual media are "lazy", just different. I don't always want to visualise what the characters look like, and most of the time I won't when I'm reading. Sometimes there's no point, especially with general fiction novels.

The thing with missing out details from the book, if they didn't do it with some films such as the Harry Potter series for example or the Anne Rice books, the films would go on for about 2-3 hours longer if they included every detail. Films are very much for relaxation though, unless it's a horror. xD

I do agree that reading exercises the creative part of the mind though, I haven't had a good read in ages and my mind is turning to mush because there's nothing out there I like at the moment. Which is a shame because I used to love reading fantasy books for hours on end.

I think it's depend on how do you watch your movie and television.
There are people who really a good watcher and they will remember all teh dialogues and paying attention to even the smallest details of every scenes.

I think, instead of lazy reading, you could say that movies and television are more of limiting your imagination because everything already shown there while in books you have to really imagine it and everyone can come up with different interpretations, at least more than watching movies or television's shows.
