its about this girl who goes toa boarding school because her dad has to do something in america and then theres a guy who looks like the dad and the look alike dies and people hink the dad died even though he didnt so when the principal hears, she has no way of getting paid for the boarding of the little girl. so then she basically makes the little girl a slave and everyone is mean to her but in the end they find out the dad was alive and the send the principal to jail for abusing the little gir;

I've seen a few versions of the story... including the one starring Shirley Temple

This is the synopsis I know:
"When her father enlists to fight for the British in WWI, young Sara Crewe goes to New York to attend the same boarding school her late mother attended. She soon clashes with the severe headmistress, Miss Minchin, who attempts to stifle Sara's creativity and sense of self- worth. Sara's belief that "every girl's a princess" is tested to the limit, however, when word comes that her father was killed in action and his estate has been seized by the British government."

I've never known a version that's told where her father has a lookalike... that's different.

I believe in the Shirly Temple version Sarah's father is alive at the end. But if you read the book he didn't go to war and was dead at the end, but Sarah still goes back to being rich. Of course, there are lots of different versions of the movie because the book is a bit old, but I think the Shirly Temple one is the most famous.

Man I love the book (must consider buying it again... again. It keeps vanishing) and so far all the movies I've seen are great even though I've yet to see one that's very accurate to the book. It's like watching someone refine and re-refine the concept to get a slightly different but still excellent story.

I saw the 1995 version.

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I think we read it in class (i don't remember reading it at all) but I brought it in and I cried at the end in the middle of class. Everyone was like "Why are you crying?" I was so embarrassed, but how could I not cry with such a heartfelt ending like that?

I watched the Shirley Temple version--I remember really liking it as a little kid. I read the novelization of that version so many times! I have the real book lying around somewhere, but I have yet to read it. I think I might try to find some time this summer since this thread got me interested in it again. :)

My favorite is the one set in India. I love the scene where the girls wake up to find this lavish breakfast in front of them. So amazing!
