The Happening

In a family outing we'd gone to see this movie yesterday night. The movie was by M. Night Shamalon, a couple of his movies (Sixth Sense, Signs) I had enjoyed and so we thought maybe this one would be good as well.

It's about .. basically about the world fighting back against us. A toxin had been released and was getting the people who inhaled it to kill themselves in the most convenient way.

It was a very strange movie, and I'm not sure if I liked it or not... All it was .. was running around trying to keep ahead of it and such. >< So there really wasn't a point to it but running around. And the wife was very strange... like she thought eating dessert with someone was cheating on her husband. :?

I dunno.. I enjoyed it for what it was.. but I think it could have been a whole lot better.

Knerd 06-16-2008 04:58 PM

Is there a lot of blood and gore in it? That's the one thing that's keeping me from seeing the movie in theatres. I don't want to end up sitting in the fetal position, hiding my eyes every 30 seconds.

Rusalka 06-16-2008 07:47 PM

There are two scenes that do show a lot of blood. I won't describe them but it is the only two true scenes that actually show the suicides without showing feet. xD Well oops there's three.. but I don't find it that gory.

But then I do enjoy watching gory type stuff so maybe my laughing at it was really because of it. xD

Takuto 06-17-2008 05:12 AM

I wanted to see it because it was rated R. However, I remind myself that I was going to see it because of the disappoint of his two other horrible movies. (the Village and Lady in the Water.) I hope he can resurrect his reputation back from Signs and the Sixth Sense.

Rusalka 06-17-2008 07:48 AM

I actually enjoyed the Village and the Lady in the Water..
Though preferred The Village over Lady in the Water and such. xD

But this is rather... worse than all of them.

I think the problem that most people had with those two films is that they were never meant to be horror films. But the producers decided to market them as these big they'll-scare-you-so-bad-you'll-have-nightmares-for-a-week kind of movies, so when everyone walked into the theatre expecting that, they were disappointed.

But I have the feeling that won't be a problem with this new film.

I'm uncertain if I wish to really see it.

The images are rather disturbing, even in the previews. I wonder just how graphic the movie would be.

I've admired SOME of M.N.S.'s work, though I generally dont fully understand it.

I liked Lady in the Water...but bleh...the other work of his is too deep and is hard to understand at times.

Strange that my favorite of his works - Lady in the Water seemed to garner the most criticism.

Fabby 06-19-2008 09:59 AM

The only thing I like about M. Night Shyamalaniyanshana... is his last name. xD
This one is supposedly just as bad as Lady in the Water (which looked so ridiculous I never even gave it a second glance) so I will certainly not be seeing it.

@Knerd-- Yes, I agree. That was the problem with The Village. I didn't think it was that bad for what it was, but the problem was it was advertised as a horror movie. If you take it as a semi-thriller type thing, it's not nearly as awful.

Rusalka 06-19-2008 05:31 PM

I wouldn't say it's too graphic, but I definitely wouldn't bring a child to see the show. I hadn't seen the previews at all though I may do so before sending this post so I can see what is eligible for me to say and see how much is shown there..

Wow .. I see what you mean about the previews being better than the movies themselves. xD

But yeah there's two gruesome scenes that I know even my uncle looked away from (I did not.. one of them I actually found.. rather amusing but that's me) and one that's been shown in one way or another in other movies so it's not that shocking.

All it basically is, is running around...

As for other of M.N.S's movies.. I really enjoyed Sixth Sense, but it must be the best of all I've seen but The Village comes after it anyhow.. After that they're at a standstill with the Happening being the last on the list. xD I suppose I'd watch it again if it were on TV and nothing else was on.. but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

King 06-20-2008 12:09 AM

I've been wanting to see this movie for sometime, but after reading reviews on the internet movie database I decided I'm going to just wait and rent it.

Concerning Shyamalan himself, the Sixth Sense was a very good movie. The Village was confusing when I first watched it, so I had to re-watch it a few more times. Overall I think Unbreakable is my favorite movie from him. I just love how they put a comic book up on the big screen without placing a far-fetched character as the star. He did a really good job with it.

That's pretty much the same reason why I want to see this movie.
I was really disappointed in The Village.

Elwing 06-28-2008 01:26 PM

I think I want to see this movie. xD
@ Takuto: I liked the village =/ especialy the twist at the end xD I disliked Signs though =/
I like it how this director puts himself in his own movies alot xD

But I'm just curious about this movie.
I'm always curious about movies that have 'the world is going to end' stories,
I always wonder how the movie ends.
Unlike War of the Wolds it ended a bit like 'we were out of money so we had to
make an 'everythingdied' ending'. And I am legend, I wasnt very happy with that
ending either, I havent seen the alternative ending on the DVD yet though.

Lissi 06-28-2008 08:29 PM

I probably will just wait for this one to come on On Demand because of the reviews.
I'm still a great fan of M. Night Shyamalan's though. I love The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable.

Pup In Fluff 06-29-2008 05:41 AM

I don't pay attention to directors much.
(Though I did love The Village. . . even though the ending sucked. All the movies of his that were mentioned in here, I liked.)

As for The Happening, if you're expecting to be scared, don't see it. It wasn't at all, in my opinion. It was gory, that's a fact. It's one of those movies that has an interesting concept and will make you think. (It may even make you laugh if you're as masochistic as I am. I was laughing the whole time and people were giving me odd looks.)

However, I do hope they make a second one. The way they ended it (without giving anything away) it felt like there was going to be another one.

Sho-Shonojo 06-29-2008 03:47 PM

The Happening is probably something I'm going to end up renting as with most of the recent M. Night movies.

I think M. Night has a different way of looking things than other people so it's just comes off as bizarre when he's making his movies. I don't hate any of his movies but some of them are just a bit odd. Lady in the Water was very strange, but I could see what he was trying to do there. Other people don't really want to try to understand movies, they want it given to them.

I tried to avoiding reading reviews for this, because then I always end up comparing the movie to them, but I couldn't help it so I think I'm just gonna wait on this one.

Oh and I just wanted to add to Elwing that the aliens didn't die at the end of the War of the Worlds because they ran out of money. The same thing happened in the original version and if I remember correctly that's how it was in the book to.

Amo_Angelus 06-29-2008 10:53 PM

I found the title amusing as to say it's called the happening...nothing actually happened! I mean pretty much all of the north west America died but you never saw anything! And it was just a waste of a cinema ticket if you ask me. I do like the fact that the daisies did it. And America and France got hit, but that last bit is more of an inside joke than anything else.

Purple Rocker 07-02-2008 09:55 PM

I went out to see The Happening too. It was sooo scary. Movies like that make you wonder what if. What if that really happend in real life?

Amo_Angelus 07-03-2008 01:47 AM

If that really happened I say good for the world. It's about time the human race got a taste of its own medicine. But I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen any time soon.

Rusalka 07-06-2008 12:14 AM

Well hey.. the Bee's here really did disappear.. so maybe it really is Happening. xD

Seriously though they had.. a parasite found it's way into the nests and killed all the bees. The mice appear to be next because I keep finding dead mice near my place.

When my grandma told me about the Bee's I was like... "It's The Happening irl!" xD

k i w i 07-15-2008 11:55 PM

This was the first scary movie I saw in the theatres, and I was unbelievably disappointed.
I give them a little credit for addressing a global issue, but the movie's plot was shallow. O.o
I'm sad wasted 10 bucks on this. =/ xD

Bramsey89 07-16-2008 01:17 AM

I was dragged to this movie by "Friends"

It was absolutely horrible. It was like a B-movie.

MaskedDream 07-16-2008 07:43 AM

I personally thought this movie was absolutely horrible. Ok my boyfriend and I went to see this movie thinking it would be a cool movie about some monsters but plants letting of toxins that made humans kill themselves. Not knowing what it was about my boyfriend watched it and ended up leaving the movie theater literally crying and puking because 2 years ago he had found his brother dead when he committed suicide AND SUICIDE IS WHAT THE WHOLE FREAKING MOVIE IS ABOUT. It is morally wrong. When the people shot themselves in the movie it freaked him out. Now how many other people had to go through that. Thinking it was going to be a monster movie and ending up being a horrifying recap of the past. Now ok I know everyone is going to go and say well you shouldn't have gone to see it. Well you know what all of the previews didn't even come close to hinting as to what the movie was really about.

Seiki Nova 07-17-2008 09:24 AM

Oh good. So I wasn't the only one who didn't like this movie.

Cherish 08-04-2008 08:07 AM

To be honest, it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

It was horribly acted, the script was cliched and predictable to the point of embarrassment, the storyline was just plain ridiculous, all topped-off with a horribly un-satisfying ending.

I've always like Shyamalan's films, and defended them, even the ones that got bad reviews, like The Village and Lady in the Water. But not even I could find a single redeeming quality in this one, it was absoloutely terrible.

It wasn't just the plot that let it down, but the way that it was written, too. Shyamalan's films have always at least been well-written, scripted with sensitivity, with very human dialogue. But this one was so clumsy it was painful to watch, it's like it was authored by a completely different person.

I was very disappointed, to say the least.

FarieFaye 08-05-2008 04:03 AM

I walked into the movie without hearing anything about it, I saw no previews, I was just like hmmm I wanna see a movie, M. Night? sure why not! So while it was pretty strange I enjoyed it. I like M. Night's work because normally he's pretty tactful about his violence/blood, I hate gore movies, I don't have the stomach for it, but I do enjoy being scared so his brand of psychological scary is right up my ally
