Good morning. Is anybody around?

Hi there GrannyJ. :) How's it going?

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 02:49 PM

Hello? Is anyone there? If so I think I'm in need of a little help.

Has anyone here ever had a hamster? >.<

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 02:51 PM

I had gerbils once, dear. Would that be the same?

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 02:53 PM

I dunno, maybe... I just got mine and I'm thinking he might be pretty stressed out, I know they stay up at night but it's like 11:00am here and I don't think it's slept all night... It just keeps running around on the wheel, stopping, running around the cage, and then getting on the wheel again. >.<

Caroline 08-14-2009 02:58 PM

Hey zig. I've had a couple hamsters and I think it may be normal for them to do that when you first get them. It takes them a little while to adjust to their new home. :)

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 03:01 PM

They do sound rather stressed.
However, mine never moved when they were stressed. They just froze in place.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 03:02 PM

Oh, okay. I'm just all worried about not like... Treating it right or whatever. ^^; I just want to be the best caregiver I can. ^_^

Do you have any suggestions maybe? I've been reading up on them and stuff but is there anything personally that you might suggest that might not found in most of the online guides? ^^;

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 03:08 PM

Just make certain they get some "alone" time, without anybody staring at them.

Caroline 08-14-2009 03:13 PM

I'd always try to interact with them as much as possible at first so they get used to me... like I'd hand feed them and pet them if they were more outgoing :P but it is good to let them be too, especially if yours is more skittish and not used to people yet. & They like playing in empty toilet paper rolls :] I don't know of anything that would help with the stress, but maybe your hamster would enjoy having something new to play with at least?

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 03:16 PM

The wheel is their favorite toy, I think.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 03:18 PM

Thanks guys! I'm trying to make it a house right now out of cardboard. I got this one that the store lady suggested but its too big for the cage! T_ T

Caroline 08-14-2009 03:25 PM

Awhh.

Get some plastic pipe fittings like this

http://upload.ecvv.com/upload/Produc...7181103044.jpg

and you can make tunnels with the toilet paper rolls ^^ If you have the middle part facing up, they'll pop out and peek around... so cute.

You're making me want another hamster! I had two, but my mom made me give them away when we moved out of the country. :(

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 03:26 PM

LOL! That does sound so cute. The cage I got does have fittings for tubes and stuff but the tubes were pretty expensive so I decided to wait on that part... ^^; The little bugger was pretty expensive with all the stuff I had to get for it! T_ T

Iseril 08-14-2009 03:26 PM

Hello all. I see we are making hamster homes and playgrounds. Well have fun. Off to work for me.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 03:28 PM

Aw... Don't worry Iseril... I'll have to go to work soon enough as well. T_ T

Caroline 08-14-2009 03:30 PM

I've never bought a hamster cage... I housed them in big, clear Rubbermaid containers. XD Cheap + they get a lot of room to run around, and it's not much of a difference from a real cage since they have bedding either way. What kind of hamster do you have?

Hi Iseril... eww work D;

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 03:54 PM

It's just like the regular common hamster. And that's a pretty good idea for a cage. ^^;

And meh... It took like 2 seconds for the hamster to realized the design flaw in my new house. He already took it apart and is now like scratching at it a lot. Any ideas what that might mean? O. o

Caroline 08-14-2009 03:59 PM

XD He probably just wants the cardboard for his own little nest. They make holes in the bedding to sleep in, and they'll use other material to build their home too.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 04:01 PM

Ah, I dunno. I'm kinda sad. I put a lot of work into that home... He didn't actually like tear it apart, just like pushed it all open and stuff. But I guess he's calmed down and sat inside it so I guess it accomplished something... T_ T

Caroline 08-14-2009 04:08 PM

lol awh. :<
Well it's good that he's calmed down. And now he has a house with a view [through the places he pushed it open] :lol:

I needa go packkkk.
It was nice chatting with you :)

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 04:08 PM

Well, I'm very glad your hamster has calmed down somewhat dear.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 04:11 PM

Aw... It was nice chatting with you too! Have fun packing! ^^;

And yeah, it's good that it calmed down now. But I think it pushed one of the flaps so that it's touching the water bottle so I'm going to have to fix that. I don't really want to disturb it though. T_ T

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 04:38 PM

I'm not certain how hamsters react to continual handling.
I know that rats enjoy the handling.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 04:43 PM

Yeah, the place I bought it from said I'm not supposed to handle it for the first 48 hours to let it get used to its cage and stuff.

Looking around online a bit more I'm trying to decide if the cage I got is too small... It seems like most people are saying you should get a big one and I can understand why but I thought the one I got was okay. I'm also wondering now how much bigger the thing will get... Stupid questions I didn't think about asking the Pet Smart lady... T_ T
