I would think you would be able to find out much more information online.

after he's aclimated to his surroundings it will be good to handle him often (be careful he doesn't jump out of your hands and slam into the floor — they can break their spines doing that – silly rodents – just play with him on soft surfaces and close to the floor lol). if you don't play with them often enough, they'll get to where they don't like to be handled.

rampagerose 08-14-2009 06:34 PM

Hey hey. Omg I hate this computer. There's so much crap on it that shouldn't be here! I really really really wish I could get permission to clean it up. The contrast on it is bizarrely off.

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 06:38 PM

Oh dear. I tried to sing for you all, but nobody was interested.

rampagerose 08-14-2009 06:41 PM

Ah. Well perhaps my character had an earache. ^-^ kekee.

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 06:41 PM

Sorry, I got roped into babysitting for a while. Grr... But yeah. I dunno. I do like the cage, it seems good but maybe not very spacious. I'm thinking it will be nice to take him out a lot to give him more room to play. I've seen some sites where people have made cages out of like clear plastic totes and that looks like a cheap way to give a larger play space. I wouldn't want to leave them in it while I'm not around but it'd be something I could let it run around in while I'm at home. ^^;

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 06:53 PM

I had one of those clear plastic balls for my gerbils. They loved to run around in them. With those, they could go all over the house!

zigbigadorlube 08-14-2009 06:55 PM

Yeah, I was wondering about a ball but like... I dunno. I want to wait to see how much the hamster warms up to me before I get one of those. ^^;

But anyway... I think I'm off now to get ready for work and stuff... It was great talking to you guys! Thanks for all the great advice!

I dunno, maybe... I just got mine and I'm thinking he might be pretty stressed out, I know they stay up at night but it's like 11:00am here and I don't think it's slept all night... It just keeps running around on the wheel, stopping, running around the cage, and then getting on the wheel again. >.<

Thanks guys! I'm trying to make it a house right now out of cardboard. I got this one that the store lady suggested but its too big for the cage! T_ T

Ahh, hamsters. Yes, I've had those, and gerbils, and even rats. Right now, since you just got him, he's going to be a little nervous and jumpy. They are nocturnal, so they like to stay up at night and sleep during the day. I know your little buddy needs to settle in, but lots of handling is really good for them, so that they become accustomed to being handled and won't start biting. They can chew through almost anything, so a cage out of anything but hard plastic, metal, or glass wouldn't be advisable. I've had cases in the past where if they can get a grip with there teeth, they could even chew through the commercial Habitrail homes (those plastic ones sold in most stores). So just keep an eye out for where they start chewing on the cage if you use those. They (the plastic ones)are the really good ones though, as they have so many add ons you can get to keep the little buggers happy! Again, they love to chew, so as someone said, they love empty toilet paper rolls. Paper towel rolls are the same. They'll chew all that stuff up if they like to make their little beds. Any kind of cardboard will do as well. Some people like to give them old newspapers, but the ink can stain their fur and probably isn't good for their little tummies. Wait until you see them pack their jaws! Don't be scared if you've never seen it. They have the ability to take all the food you give them and pack it in their jaws to move it elsewhere. When they do, you can actually touch the sides and feel all the little corn kernels and seeds!

Hope all this helps and enjoy your little critter!

Glass aquariums work very nicely as cheap cages. You can get a 10g one for about $15, or you can look around online and see if anyone is selling a broken one (since it doesn't need to be watertight) for cheaper. My gerbil seems quite happy with all the space in her 20g tank.. <3

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 07:56 PM

That is an excellent idea, Fabby.
I did like the gerbil trails that Infinity is talking about though.
Yes, I remember the scads of toilet paper and paper towel rolls that I went through.

Have a good evening, Zig. I hope we see you later.

Yes, the little buggers will chew up anything. I wanted to mention any old cloth they may have, but if they have babies, the little ones can get wrapped up in the shredded cloth strings. We had a gerbil once that we called stumpy because he lost a leg like that when he was a newborn. Well, either lost the limb or messed it up, it's been a long time since that happened.

And yes, if you get the habitrail ones or plastic ones, you can use one of the top little areas to put their food in and if it's a tiny area, they'll pack their little jaws to move it downstairs, so it gives you something to watch that's really cute!

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 08:34 PM

Yes, I really liked my little gerbils. I had to give them away when I got my cat. The cat would stare at their habitat, and the poor little things just froze.

My co-worker had some children who loved the gerbils, so I gave them to him.

Jezriel 08-14-2009 08:47 PM

I miss having a hamster. Our last one got lost when my (at that time quite young) son let him out of the cage to play. He'd seen a lot of Hamtaro, and even though I told him our hamster wasn't near that smart, he was still surprised when Hammy never came back.

I miss my ferret too. The housing I'm in won't allow ANY pets, so Axel went to my brother.

GrannyJ 08-14-2009 08:56 PM

That's one of the problems with hamsters, gerbils, and rats.
They are so tiny, if they get out you can never find them.

Yeah, the kitty stare can give the little things quite a scare. I had one kitty that would lay on TOP of the cage when no one was looking as if waiting for snacktime to begin! Not good. It guess it's torture on them both :).

rampagerose 08-14-2009 09:12 PM

NOM! What's everyone doing?

Jezriel 08-14-2009 09:57 PM

Running around like hamsters, pouching stars and hoarding items? XD

Please, hoarding is such an awful-sounding word. How about saving as an investment?

my kitties did that to our fish all the time. one time, a cat actaully ate our goldfish. Its a very stupid idea to have cats and an open fishbowl. My cats are the one reason I can't get some rodent or bird. Or even a new kitten!!
